A stagewise regression analysis was applied to examine interrelations between the mechanical properties of Al and Al-Cu alloy castings and the solidification and solution treatment conditions. The equations
F-treated concerning individual structure factors are adequate in predicting the mechanical properties with accuracy 81 to 96%. The structure factors governing the tensile strength, hardness and 0.2% proof stress are in order of the solute concentration in matrix
CM, the angle of tensile axis to crystal axis φ and the amount of second phase
fθ. Those governing the elongation are in order of
fθ,
CM and φ. The grain size factors such as the secondary arm spacing, the primary arm spacing and the macrograin size are contributive in this order.
