Electropolished 99.99% aluminum sheets were heat treated in air at 500°C for 15min and subsequently anodized in 0.1M ammonium pentaborate solution at 25°C with a constant current density of 50A/m2. Transmission electron microscopy of the stripped anodic films has shown that the films consist of both amorphous and crystalline γ'-alumina. The crystalline γ'-alumina occurs as discrete islands of approximately circular shape when viewed in plan. The diameter of the crystalline islands increases linearly with increasing forming voltage, starting from about 35V. Transmission electron microscopy of ultramicrotomed sections of the anodic films has shown that the crystalline islands take the form of approximately convex lens shape in section and are located near the middle of the barrier oxide layer embedded within amorphous film material. The growth of crystalline γ'-alumina can be explained reasonably if it is assumed that the thermal oxide layer contains tiny crystallites of γ-alumina that serve as effective nucleation sites for the growth of γ'-alumina.

The shape of disc crystals in Al-4.5%Cu alloy unidirectionally solidified is drawn on the basis of three dimensional analysis of solute concentration contours on the surface. The contour represents the growth pattern of discs. The disc is nucleated heterogeneously at the edge on the chill block surface. Cu is gradually condensed from the center of discs toward the outside. The disc base is necked. The number of predendrite arms grown from the disc decreases with increasing the heat flux at the ingot-chill block interface.

The effect of grain boundary precipitates on the embrittlement of 5083 alloy solutionized, aged at 150°C for various periods and coated with liquid Ga was investigated by means of tensile test and microscopy. Ga coated 5083 alloy fractures along grain boundaries. The shorter the aging time, the lower the fracture stress of Ga coated alloy, though ultimate tensile strength of the alloy uncoated. is independent of the aging time. When the alloy was held at 35°C for various periods after Ga coating, the fracture stress becomes to be zero after a critical holding period tf. A relation between fracture stress σf and holding time t is expressed as σff0-k•t1/2, where σf0 and k are constants.

Micrography, inverse rate thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction and EPMA analysis were made. Al-Ca-Zn system is composed of two quasibinary system of Al-CaZnAl and Al-CaZn13 and devided into three regions by these quasibinary systems. Two invariant reactions, peritectic and eutectic, occur in Al-CaZnAl quasibinary system at 856° and 625°C respectively. The eutectic point lies at approximately Al-4.5%Ca-7.3%Zn. Al-CaZn13 quasibinary system has an eutectic point, L=Al+CaZn13, at 546°C at approximately Al-2.4%Ca-57.9%Zn. A binary compound CaAl4 in Al-Ca system gradually changes into a ternary compound CaZnAl3. The axial ratio of its tetragonal structure increases with quantity of Zn. A ternary eutectic reaction proceeds both in Zn concentrated and dilute sides of the Al-CaZn13 quasibinary system at 543° and 380°C respectively.

The effect of such cutting conditions as tool material and nose shape on the turning surface glossiness of 5056 alloy and Al-19%Si cast alloy was studied. Diamond tool turning results in the highest specular glossiness. Compact diamond and carbide tool turning results in nearly the same specular glossiness. Flat and round nose shapes are favorable in this order. The surface turned with a sword nose diamond tool is excellent in luminus but poor in specular glossiness. The specular glossiness is attributed to the maximum roughness and pitch of roughness.
