JOURNAL FREE ACCESSFabrication of the inlay clad foil of rapidly solidified aluminum alloy has been investigated using a single roll apparatus equiped with convex (T-shaped) or concave (U-shaped) slit nozzle which is attached over the roll in tandem with another rectangular slit nozzle. It is found that the foil having convex or concave cross section can be produced by the present method. The effect of geometrical parameters of slit nozzle on the soundness of foil is also discussed in detail. When the melt of insert foil material is ejected and then the melt of base foil material is superimposed on it, roll contact surface of insert foil becomes flush with that of base foil, resulting in the sound inlay clad foil.View full abstractDownload PDF (822K) -

JOURNAL FREE ACCESSWorkability, mechanical properties affected by cold-working and heat-treatment, and corrosion resistance were investigated for Mg-8 and 13mass%Li binary and ternary alloys containing additional elements of Al, Cu, Zn and Ag. The workability in cold-rolling was not markedly affected by the addition of third elements. The alloys containing aluminum or silver showed age-hardening. Mg-8 and 13mass%Li alloys containing 5mass% Al were hardened by the spinodal decomposition when the alloys were quenched from temperatures higher than 473K. The elongation of a Mg-8mass%Li-1mass%Ag alloy was 96.5%. Mg-8 and 13mass%Li ternary alloys showed low corrosion resistance compared with binary alloys.View full abstractDownload PDF (996K) -

JOURNAL FREE ACCESS6061 aluminum alloy matrix composites were fabricated by a squeeze-exhaust casting method and their mechanical properties were investigated. The present composites were reinforced with 20vol.% duplex materials consisting of various ratio of SiC whisker and Al2O3 particles. In the extruded composites containing small amount of whisker, most whiskers were arranged in one direction and few of the whiskers were broken. The composites containing 2 portion of whisker and 8 of particles showed maximum tensile strength of 51.7kgf/mm2 at room temparature and 15.8kgf/mm2 at 300°C. The work hardening exponent of the duplex reinforced composites was higher than that of composites simply reinforced with whisker or particles.View full abstractDownload PDF (930K) -

JOURNAL FREE ACCESSHeterogeneous precipitation of intermediate phases on dispersoid particles of Al3Zr was examined in both Al-4%Cu-0.18%Zr and Al-2%Li-3%Cu-0.15%Zr alloys with special attention to the coherency state of the particles which might change during solution treatment through recrystallization. Specimens were solution-treated and directly aged at 473K without quenching to prevent the formation of dislocation loops which can act as the heterogeneous nucleation sites for intermediate phases. In the Al-Cu-Zr alloy, the dispersoid particles are coherent with matrix in a recovered (unrecrystallized) region and they act as heterogeneous nucleation sites for the θ' phase in such a way that the particles are in contact with broad coherent planes of θ' precipitates. On the other hand, the particles become incoherent in a recrystallized region and they are in contact with narrow incoherent planes of the precipitates. In the Al-Cu-Li-Zr alloy, however, the particles are coherent both in recovered and recrystallized region and they are in contact with coherent planes of T1 precipitates. JOURNAL FREE ACCESSElectrochemical and metallurgical investigations have been made to clarify the effect of intermetallic compound, FeAl3 on the aluminum pitting corrosion. The dissolution of iron in the intermetallic compounds and subsequent deposition of the ferrous ions to metallic iron have been observed in pitting environments (deaerated 0.01m-1.0m AlCl3 solution). The autocatalytic nature of the pitting is attributed to formation of galvanic couples between aluminum matrix and the deposited iron in the environments.View full abstractDownload PDF (700K) -

JOURNAL FREE ACCESSEffect of grain size on the polarization behavior and interfacial impedance response of oxide film of solution treated Al-Zn-Mg alloy has been investigated. Pitting potential in 0.5kmol/m3 NaCl solution becomes noble and passivation current density decreases with increase in grain size number. Diameter of semicircles in impedance diagrams, which corresponds to resistance for each reaction, tends to increase with increase in the grain boundary length in Al-Zn-Mg alloy and Cr containing alloy, though it does not almost depend on the grain boundary length in Cu containing alloy. Capacitance calculated from impedance diagrams shows a similar dipendence on the grain boundary length with that of resistance.View full abstractDownload PDF (912K) -

JOURNAL FREE ACCESSThe effect of matrix grain size on the mechanical properties and wear properties of SiC whisker/A6061 aluminum alloys composites were investigated. The composites were fabricated by hot extrusion after hot press process. The relative density after the second work, U.T.S., 0.2%P.S., and elastic modulus are dependent on grain sizes of matrix. Due to uniformely dispersed SiC whiskers, the strength and elastic modulus of the composites with smaller grain size of matrix are superior to the composite with larger one. But the tensile property of P/M A6061 aluminum alloy is not related to the grain size. Wear properties of matrix are extremely improved by small addition of SiC whisker, while they are unchanged by the grain size of matrix.View full abstractDownload PDF (1065K) -

JOURNAL FREE ACCESSThe SiC whisker/aluminum alloy (ADC12) composites were fabricated by die casting following compocasting. Tensile properties, hardness, elastic modulus and wear properties were investigated. 0.2% proof stress and elastic modulus of ADC12-X-5Vf%SiCw composites are superior to those of ADC12 alloy and ADC12-5Vf%SiCw composites. The composites with matrix of 0.9mass%Mg added alloy show the highest strength. Wear loss of composites containing 5Vf% SiC whisker is approximately 50% smaller compared with ADC12 aluminum alloy.View full abstractDownload PDF (1353K) -
