    The photocatalytic activity of TiO2 thin film formed on 5083 aluminum alloy (TiO2/5083) sheets by using the advanced sol-gel method, and the effect of anodic oxide film between TiO2 thin film and 5083 alloy sheets were investigated by evolution of photocatalytic activity, X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The photocatalytic activity of TiO2/5083 sheet was low and MgO was detected by XRD and TEM. The photocatalytic activity of TiO2/5083 sheet with anodic oxide was improved and was higher than that of TiO2/5083 sheet without anodic oxide film. It was confirmed by XRD, SEM and high resolution TEM that MgO was not detected in the TiO2 thin film with anodic oxide film between TiO2 thin film and 5083 sheet. It has been considered that the sheet which has anodic oxide film between TiO2 and 5083 sheet did not have MgO.

    Effects of hard-coated die on surface roughness of extruded sheets of aluminum alloy are investigated. Roughness (Ra) of coated area is 0.05 mm, 0.1 μm and 0.2 μm. Hard-coat films of 3 μm thickness, CrN, TiN and TiAlN, are prepared by Arc Ion Plating. Ra of coated area is observed before extruding, after extruding and after removal of adhesive layer. Average thickness of adhesive layer on the coated area is calculated from volume adhered. When Ra of bearing area (coated area) was decreased, thickness of adhesive layer and Ra of extruded sheets were decreased. However, after removal of adhesive layer, CrN and TiN film (Ra=0.05 μm) had been peeled, and TiAlN film remained unchanged. TiAlN surface roughness (Ra) was also unchanged during extrusion. As a result, roughness (Ra) of extruded sheet could be reduced to less than 0.1 mm by TiAlN-coated die.

    Gas blow forming originally developed to thermoplastics has been revised and applied to superplastic alloy sheets. It involves, however, low production rate, high cost for forming tools and poor working environment due to heating. Instead of using inert gas or air blowing, dilatational work of inert gases during heating was inspired by authors as a kind of pressure source. Several gas generants being used in forming foamed plastics or metals and air bag in car seem to be available for the purpose. A few of gas generants in form of powder were tentatively selected and supplied for experiments here. Conventional gas blow forming and proposed method with using these gas generants were compared with regard to formability and cavitation. Experimental results on superplastic aluminum sheets obviously demonstrate a feasibility of practical use of it in engineering application.

    The corrosion characteristics of aluminum power cable on which the intermetallic phase were successfully removed by the cathodic treatment in a 20% nitric acid solution at current density of −2 kA/m2 were examined in a 1.0 kmol/m3 NaCl solution. It was found that the FeAl3 free surface of aluminum power cable by the treatment showed corrosion behavior of high purity aluminum. Electrochemical measurements revealed that the FeAl3 free surface coated by the anodizing finishing treatment exhibits excellent oxide film performance.
