    Cutting of the circular aluminum sheets (1100P-H14, 1100P-O) by indentation of wedge shape punches was investigated as a process to achieve burr-free-cutting. Numerical simulations of the cutting process were conducted using a rigid plastic finite element code developed by the authors. The Jeong expression is used as a fracture criterion and was linked with the simulation. Metal flow and mean normal stress distributions at the deformation region of the sheet were calculated. The effects of nose angle and radius of the wedge shape punch on the cut edge profile are discussed based on the calculated results. To confirm the results of the finite element simulations, cutting experiments were also carried out. Cutting force with punch penetration depth was measured. And the shape of the cut edge was observed using an optical microscope. These experimental results can be explained well by the simulation results. From simulational and experimental results, it was clarified that the cutting process of the circular aluminum sheets of the burr-free was possible with wedge shape punch.

    Resistance of wear and oxidation of hard-coated die for aluminum extrusion is investigated. Nitrided layer was prepared by radical nitriding method, and the 3 μm hard coat films, CrN, TiN, TiAlN and TiAlCrN, were prepared by arc ion plating. Hardness, friction coefficient, critical load and roughness (Ra) of hard-coated specimens (SKD61) were observed before and after oxidation at atmosphere, 500°C-5 h. Roughness (Ra) of coated area of die before extrusion and after removal of adhesive aluminum were compared. Surface composition of coated area after 5 extrusions were analized by ESCA. In the case of nitrided die, whole coated area was oxidized, scraches (depth: 2 mm, width: 20 μm) had occurred in the direction of extrusion and roughness (Ra) was increased after 5 extrusions. On the contrary, the roughness of the coated area with TiAlN films hardly changed after 5 extrusions. TiAlN coated die showed higher durability in comparison with dies coated with nitrided, because of the higher oxidation resistance of TiAlN.

    5052 aluminum alloy plate used for substrate and 2017 aluminum alloy bar used for consumable rod, both monolayer and multilayer friction surfacing were done using a numerical controlled full automatic friction welding machine. Effects of the surfacing conditions on structure and mechanical properties of both monolayer and multilayer deposits were investigated. It was clearly observed that the circular pattern appeared on the surface of both monolayer and multilayer deposits by the rotation of consumable rod, and the interval of circularly pattern become narrower with increasing of the rotation of consumable rod. The monolayer deposit has a tendency to incline toward right side (Retreating side) further than center of deposit for the traverse direction of consumable rod. And, the 2nd surfacing of multilayer deposit recognized to incline toward the 1st deposit side. A little of incomplete welds was observed at both sides of monolayer deposit. The incomplete parts of welds 1st deposit in multilayer deposit was disappeared by 2nd surfacing. Microstructures of both monolayer and multilayer deposits were finer than those of the substrate and consumable rod. The surfacing efficiency of 2nd surfacing in multilayer deposit showed higher value than that of the monolayer deposit. Hardness of both deposits showed higher value than that of the substrate and same value of consumable rod. The softened area was recognized at 2.5 mm distance from the weld interface of substrate and consumable rod. The tensile strength of multilayer deposit showed higher value than that of the monolayer deposit, and both deposits showed higher value than that of the substrate.
