Mitsui has developed new 4-stroke medium speed diesel engine L and V 42M, having cylinder output of 750 bhp. Main features of the engine are: 1. Strong and sturdy structure 2. Easy maintenance 3. Simplified L.O. and F.W. lines In this paper, the structural characteristics which realizes abovementioned features, the research results which are obtained in achieving them and performance data are described. And, brief comments on reduction gears for 42M engine are also presented.
Recently in the field of marine diesel engines, the demand for economical ones which could save fuel oil and lubricating oil consumption has exceedingly increased. To cope with these circumstances, we have been attacking to solve this problem on KAWASAKI-MAN two stroke diesel engines. As one solution for that, we developed a new timing cylinder lubricating system which had a simple construction without the necessity of any particular device for adjusting the oil supply timing. For the development of this system, various investigations such as experiments on a test engine, preliminary shop tests and onboard tests were carried out. As the results, it was confirmed that this system was extremely reliable having no parts subject to wear or damage and also it could give big economical effect on operating conditions. This paper presents the principle of this system and test data together with the running results obtained.
Concerning the strength design of the components of combustion chamber in marine diesel engines and the reliability evaluation for them, many investigations have been carried out in this field for about ten years. The authors have also investigated on this field, and established their own philosophy on strength design of the components such as combustion wall which is cooled by water on the other side, through analysis of these investigation on cast-steel components used in the former type KSZ engines, under mutual cooperation and assistance by MAN. Reliability of actual engines were evaluated based on the philosophy mentioned above. The results were compared to running results and it was assured that this reliability evaluation stands for forecasting of reliability of the components. This reliability evaluation was also applied on design of the newly developed KSZ-B/BL type engines.
