    The basis of all approaches to improving reliable marine engines is to analyze the field data of troubles and failures on marine engines. To this end, a data bank system is developed at Ship Research Institute. The data bank system contains data on ships and their engine failures and troubles. The total number of ships dealt with is 1029 vessel × year. The details of the data bank are described in this paper.
    Two examples of application of the data bank are stated here. One of them is factor analysis of diesel engine failures by the Irincipal Component Analysis Method. Especially, detecting methods of abnormal states and initial judgments by operators are carefully analyzed as failure factors. The other is a failure map as an engine trouble diagnostic system.

    Many studies have been actively carried out to increase a specific power of medium speed diesel engine through a rise in supercharging pressure. In these studies it is an important subject to increase the reliability through a reduction in thermal load as well as to improve the thermal efficiency for energy-saving.
    In this paper a simulation of cycle and performance was combined with that of thermal load. The specific fuel consumption and thermal load of four-stroke medium speed diesel engine were analyzed for the factors of engine cycle and thermal load such as compression process, supercharging process including suction and exhaust systems, conditions of materials, constructions and cooling of combustion chamber wall components, and so on.
    As a result, the effects of the engine cycle and performance on the thermal load were clarified. Such conditions of the cycle characteristics, conditions of combustion chamber walls and their cooling that can reduce the thermal load as well as improve the thermal efficiency could be obtained.

    In order to obtain lighter, more compact, and more effective turbine-driven propulsion gears, it is necessary to know the actual load carrying capacity of reduction gears as close as possible.
    This paper describes some results of the load tests performed on the large size models of reduction gears, by means of a gear testing machine having the center distance 720mm. All of the test gears were five and double-helical. Three pairs were failed by pinion tooth breakages.
    Non-modified-shaved gears was failed after K=350psi load run. At that time, it had operated at that load for 10×107 load cycles. Pittings were appeared after the tests were over.
    Modified-shaved gears was failed after K=400psi load run, and it had operated at that load for 5×107 load cycles: However, it did carry over K=350psi load before failing. Similarly, shaved and honed gears carried K=350psi load successfully. Pittings appeared at loads K=250-350psi.
    In addition, this paper deals with the tooth load distributions by measuring actually the stress in the root fillet, temperature difference between gear and pinion, and temperature distributions in the tooth face.
    As a result of these tests, so many important influence factors such as design features, materials, and manufacturing process as they relate to the load carrying capacity of reduction gears, can be evaluated more accurately.

    The subject propulsion plant is energy saving one planned at the confused time just after the oil crisis with the view to fuel oil & space saving. This plant comprises one set of Mitsubishi M.A.N. 12V52/55 and 14V52/55 diesel engine coupled with a controllable pitch propeller and a shaft generator driven by a port side main engine via step-up gear. This plant improves the manoeuverability and operational economy of the ship, because of adoption of controllable pitch propeller and medium speed diesel engines with a shaft generator that give low fuel oil consumption. For the routine maintenance work, there is provided a maintenance room where necessary machineries and tools are equipped - New maintenance system. The result of two years service has shown good reliability for this marine propulsion plant and control system. While, new maintenance system for main engine has proved to have much efficiency for maintenance work of engine parts, specially for intake and exhaust valves, and has had good reputation of on-board engineers.

    Recently IHI delivered the first vessel of its“FRIENDSHIP”series and is now developing the “FREEDOM MK-II”series adding to its“F-series”vessels.
    Both standard vessels incorporate with many characteristic design features such as less fuel costs, less maintenance and easy operations to overcome the difficulties of recent shipping world trends. The“Integrated Propulsion System”is one of the most remarkable features among them. The design philosophy and some details of this system together with related engine room system are given in this paper including the trial results of“M/V FALCON”, the first vessel of the“FRIENDSHIP”series.

    The potable water is so essential to the health of all onboard and the regulations are provided for potable water and its treatment in most nations.
    In such condition, various units are produced and each kind of unit has its own characteristics on the dimensions, the structure, the capacity and the cost etc.
    Three means are used for treatment of potable water, i.e. silver ion, ultra violet, and chlorination.
    In this paper, explanations of some terms and extracts of requirement by major regulatory agencies are presented.
    And in addition, variety, features and installation guide for each sterilizing unit and its associated machinery are reported.

    Since the oil crysis in 1973, fuel and labour costs have continued to soar, while the world economy has remained dull. In these conditions, the shipowners' desire for an energy and labour saving propulsion plant has been very evident. In response to such a demand, Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd., has tried to develop a new type propulsion plant, and late in 1976 completed the Kawasaki Super Economical Propulsion Plant (KSE Plant) which can save energy and labour compared with a conventional plant. This report describes features of this KSE plant. Also described is an outline of the first ship equipped with this KSE plant, which was completed last January and has been continuing successful operation.

    This paper provides a detailed reliability and availability study of major U.S. Navy Controllable Pitch Propeller (CPP) Systems. The approach was to conduct a reliability study on these CPP systems to identify problem areas and to direct corrective action funds to those areas that will achieve the best payoff. Recommendations include that higher shaft-horsepower CPP systems, associated with the newer ships, be reviewed to assure that similar problems identified in this study are not repeated.
