    The conventional method for investigating the combustion characteristics of fuel of single oil droplet are not capable of treating the marine fluid fuel in use today such as marine heavy fuel oil, fluid catalytic cracked bottom based oil, etc.. For instance, the method of analyzing the variation of oil droplet diameter with time is no longer applicable, since the heavy oil droplet expands and contracts complexly and randomly during combustion. Another popular technique is the mass method, which observes the mass variation with time. Yet the ascending gas current and the vibration of the suspending filament render the results very undependable. Hence, a new way for studying the combustion phenomenon of highly carbonized and viscous low grade marine fuel of single oil droplet is in urgent need.
    In this investigation, the author suggested a new method by measuring in an insulated constant volume combustion chamber the equivalent integral area corresponding to the change rate of temperature and the processing time difference of various sample oil droplets comparing to the standard cetane fuel droplet under the same initial conditions, thence deriving the combustion rate and related characterestics.
    The results of this investigation showed that this new method is reliable and is applicable to low grade marine fluid fuel as well as to high grade fluid fuel.

    There are many unsolved problemes about the strength of the shell and the leakage of valve seats of an industrial gate valve under pressure. This paper describes some results of the pressure test performed on a cast iron marine gate valve, JISF 7363.
    Test was carried out by applying oil pressure inside the assembled valve with the end flanges capped, and the obturator was operated by turning the handwheel. The maximum oil pressure was about 2.5 times permissible working pressure. Strains of the inside and outside surfaces of the body wall, and the deflections of the bon-net flange on the axis of body neck were measured and investigated. Moreover, the effects of the handwheel operations affecting on the stress distributions, deflections, and seat contacts were examined.

    The paper expressed chronologically the development of all technical topics between 1195 and 1945, which are extracted from the historical manuscripts written by the above Sub-Committee regarding to all the electrical and electronic equipments progress in the Japanese warships and merchant vessels before 1945.
    As these works have been completed mostly by the relief of The Japan Shipbuilding Industly Foundation, our members express gratitude to the favour.
    The electrical and electronic equipments containt as follows.

    3) radio and others electronic apparatus
    4) electrical navigation instruments
    5) degaussing equipments of ships etc.

    On a diesel ship provided with an exhaust gas economizer, there are problems with soot fire which occurs in the economizer itself and safety against fired soot exhausted from the funnel.
    Not only ship owners and ship builders but also persons concerned have placed great importance on the soot fire and taken preventive measures. It, however, remains an unsolved problem.
    This report covers;
    1) investigation of the process of occurrence of soot fire
    2) preventive measures against soot fire
    3) the effect achieved by the preventive measures
    On a container ship which has a steam turbo generator plant by a large exhaust gas economizer.
    The preventive measures against soot fire given in this report is not effective on all kind of exhaust gas economizer plants, but shows a guideline for preventing soot fire.

    This paper shows that the new CODAD solusion using 4 engines and 2 propellers is interesting for a 2500 tons frigate, thanks to a new generation of diesel engines with low compression ratio and two stages turbo charging process (SEMTPielstick PA6BTC engines) and that the frigates up to 4500 tons and even 5000 tons can be built in the same way with the following advantages, that is, noise detection improved thanks to the elastic mounting of complete propulsion units, infrared detection improved, compact and independent propulsion units, very good survivability, narrow inlet and exhaust ducting, large flexibility of operation and large overhaul interval and easy maintenance on board by crew, etc..
