It has been demanded more and more to improve the reliability of boiler water treatment, and also to establish the appropriate water quality control criterions corresponding to the recent situation of actual ships such as the rapid change of crew manning of ocean-going ships, etc. Actual situation of waterquality control of auxiliary boilers has been investigated for several years by the Boiler Research Subcommittee of the Marine Engineering Society in Japan (MESJ), and the Subcommittee has made some proposals for reliable water treatment based on above investigation. This paper describes briefly the proposals.
This paper describes the abstract of our new refrigerated container monitoring system with LAN. The refrigerated container monitoring system is designed for monitoring running conditions of the containers. In the ordinary systems, multiplexed data transmission method has been applied. However, a large amount of wires are required to implement it. In order to reduce amount of wires, we have developed a new refrigerated container monitoring system called UMS-35 II K. In this UMS-35 II K, terminal units of LAN are installed inside of the container's receptacle boxes, and are connected by multi-drop method. In addition to this, these terminals have interfaces directly connectable for container monitoring signal, and are implemented into smaller boxes.
This paper describes the results of land test by burning heavy fuel oil in oder to confirm the reliability of the medium speed diesel engine of 200mm-diameter cylinder. Furthermore, the actual on-board investigations with engine disassembly were carried out on the same model engine that had been operated by using heavy fuel oil (equivalent to 380 cSt) for approximately 8, 800 hours. And it was confirmed that the reliability of the actual on-board engine have been kept. Within the limits of this study, the results of land test were very useful to expect the engine component contaminations on board.
The fishing boat industry has a chronic shortage in the labor force due to bad working conditions. Improvement of the working environment and labor saving by automation are needed. “Electronically Controlled Clutch”was developed to meet the above demands. We have been researching the required performance and function needs based on the mechatronics previously developed at our company, and at the same time, improving our grasp of the market demand by going aboard different types of ships at different locations. In this article, we will introduce the summary of a case study on mechatronics technology as applied to the propeller propulsion system.
Effects of cetane index of fuel on engine performances and exhaust emissions were studied by using a single cylinder diesel engine. Start up tests were carried on various fuels of cetane indexes from 35 to 60. In the case of cetane index of 40 or less, start up periods have been lengthened, and exhaust emissions such as white smoke, CO and hydrocarbon have increased. At the low load operation, combustion was deteriorated resulting from the excess ignition delay when fuel's cetane index was 40 or less. On the other hand, the condition of high load operation, NOx emission and noise were increased with decreasing cetane index. These are due to the high rate of combustion pressure rise just when the violent premixed combustion caused by long ignition delay occurred. It has been understood that various influences appear remarkably when cetane indexes below 40 or 45 for high speed diesel engines.
