    The OMEGA system was studied to get practical information on its coverage, reliability and accuracy. A survey on the relative accuracy of the system was conducted in terms of selected pairs and their combinations. These are the findings : 1. It might be possible to evaluate the relative accuracy of OMEGA system by comparing OMEGA positions with radar positions. 2. Day time data shows the best relative accuracy. 3. Observed lane numbers for AB and AC are smaller than those for reference positions. 4. Relative accuracies for pairs are different depending on the time of day.

    It is the purpose of this paper to study how much the hyperbola formed by Decca Navigator System is disturbed by an isolated island in the open sea. The equiphase lines near a circular island are calculated with use of the electromagnetic compensation theorem by Monteath. As a result, the instanteneous phase velocity and the bearing error are obtained. On the other hand, the errors of LOPs for the red and the green patterns of Kita-Kyushu Decca Navigator Chain were measured around Iki Island by a ship. It is verified theoretically and experimentally that the hyperbolic pattern is bent towards the island in the both sides of the sea regions of the island situated near the baseline. Secondly, it is found that the change of the direction of the hyperbola corresponds to the bearing error.

    In use of NNSS system, several methods have been published to avoid the ionospheric effect even on one-wave receiver. This paper describes an evaluatian of the differential system using the data obtained from two fixed stations, one, which is main station, has two-wave receiver and the other, which is sub-station, has one-wave receiver near the main station. The obtained data were adjusted and a correction was made on a measured position of substation. The evaluations were made by month, time, maximum elevation angle of satellite. Consequently the standard error of sub-station is considerably converted as to longitude such as 1/2-1/3 comparing with non-corrected position by month and time, and as to latitude the average value is considerably converted by maximum elevation angle. Problems such as means of delivery of correction value and its coverage for practical purposes, are yet to be solved in the future.

    The hybrid navigation system combining the inertial navigation system (INS) and the aeronautical satellite system (AEROSAT) was proposed here and its data processing algorithm by means of Kalman filtering was shown. Various simulations were carried out and it became clear that the accuracy of the INS/AEROSAT hybrid navigation was better than 2 nautical miles in almost all part of North Pacific Ocean area and better than 4 nautical miles in the vicinity of the equator. Also, simulation results showed that the best improvements on typical airroutes were 3〜9% for the position errors, 27〜46% for the velocity errors and 40〜70% for the platform drift angle errors compared with normal INS navigation.

    In order to prevent radar false echoes caused by a bridge, the structure of a bridge and its materials for absorbing electromagnetic waves from the radar have been investigated in various methods. About the Osima Ohasi Bridge, the front side of No.3 bridge pier and the triangular part of the span structure were covered with "Aluminum Expanded Metal". And experiments on the effect of "The Metal" have been carried out. The radar reflection patterns were measured on the cross sections of the middle part and the triangular part of the span structure on No.3 pier. The radar reflection patterns were also measured on the vertical section of the side views of the same parts above mentioned.

    Lately, large bridges have been constructed across shipping routes. These bridges cause false reflections to be displayed on radar screens. Preventive measures to reduce dangerous false reflections have been taken. These measures include the improvement of bridge structure design and the installation of reflection plates or specially developed absorbing materials. For bridges which have already been constructed the use of absorbing materials is efficacious. This paper describes experimental results obtained from an unusually large scale model. These results would be difficult to obtain with a normal size model. The following conclusions were obtained : (1) The reduction of false reflections using absorbing materials was 22dB for the total round trip. Comparing this to the indoor model there is a difference of about 20dB. (2) The climatic drift in strength of false reflections was about 10dB. This result is important in considering future preventive measures.

    The author developed MSPL-II based upon his simulation language MSPL-I. The MSPL-Version II have been developed with the following objectives in mind : (1) Marine traffic flow representation in computer (2) Efficient programming (3) Compatibility (4) Easy programming (5) Low cost (6) Readability. The MSPL-II System is consisted of a MSPL language processor and MSPL execute program, and has been written in FORTRAN. The number of instructions amounts to about 60 while the number of basic instructions is 19. By these instructions, navigation channel, ship generation, ship's characteristics, output, variable and simulation control itself are defined strictly and a simulation program is made to represent a marine traffic flow.

    Author proposed a model to determine the lane width at straight and one way traffic route as the function of the traffic volume, considering the reliability for strandings. The model was based on the distribution of ship's tracks which were derived from the statistical analyses of traffic surveys by Radar at nallow channels in Japan. According to this analyses, the tracks were normally distributed and the standard deviation could be expressed by a regression equation of lane width and traffic volume on the route. The width of the lane on the model was determined under the condition that the tracks within ±κσ of the distribution lie within the traffic lane. Standard normal variate κ was found in the table of upper probability integrals of the normal distribution, using probability P that the tail of the distribution of ship's tracks protruded out of the traffic lane. We can obtain the probability P from the formula (3) in this paper under the condition that probability which no stranding will occur during t years equals a certain predetermined level. F in the formula shows the probability that lead a ship to stranding actually within the probability P. And the value of F was estimated at 10^<-2> by means of statistical analysis of accident and traffic surveys at nallow channels. It would be capable for us to evaluate the required width of traffic lane as the function of the traffic volume according to this model.

    In this paper, we try to study optimum ship routes by simulations. The main purposes of studies are to investigate the effect of wave prediction to the optimum route and to compare a few optimum routes which have different criterion functions. We used Dynamic Programming for the optimization and 16200G/T container ship was selected as a model ship. The wave data were taken from actual daily wave charts of December in 1977. The main results from simulations are as follows. 1. The tracks of minimum time routes may vary widely and rapidly with the daily changes of wave pattern. 2. A practical weather routing is possible if we can get accurate wave prediction having the first one-third period of the time enroute and optimum route is recalculated every day. 3. Minimum fuel consumption route has approximately the same track as minimum time route.

    The author assumed that collision of ships shall be caused by failure of watch system which is composed between the time of discovering a ship and the time of collision. Therefore, the interval of the time is a life of the system. Data of the times were collected, and the reliabilities of watch systems were analyzed by Weibull distribution. Watch systems were classified into watching vessels in day time, watching lights in night, and watching by radar. The conclusions are as follows. 1) The assumption that collision of ships is caused by failure of watch system is acceptable. 2) Motarity of watching vessels system in day time is caused by fatigue failure until the time of 5 minutes, motarity after the time of 5 minutes is caused by random failure. 3) Motarity of watching lights system in night is complexed of fatigue failure and random failure. 4) The watching system with human's eye and radar image may has the supperior reliablity.

    Temperature, humidity and moisture content of damaged and intact hay-cube in dry container are measured at a pier of No.4 Eastern Reclamation Site. Equilibrium relative humidities of the air in contact with the hay-cube of varius moisture contents are measured by gravimetric (weighting bottle) method. Using measured data, limiting moisture content of hay-cube necessary to protect sweat damage during transit are proposed.

    The container traffic varies to and from every port in the world, so that container imbalances must be economically adjusted to coincide with actual demand. With operational data at the container yard at the port of Kobe, the procedure was shown to find a formula evaluating how many containers are needed for each container space aboard ship-so many ashore being loaded and so many ashore being unloaded for every container at sea. The uncertainty in operation associated with container demand was also evaluated to fix the optimum number of containers, using a simple random walk model with two reflecting barriers. These may help when minimizing the operating cost by making available the right containers at the right place, at the right time.

    現在稼動している船長15m以上の漁船を漁業種類によって分類しその実態と性能を明らかにした。1)各種漁船とも大型化が進行しL,B,Dの相乗積が増加し,最近の沖合底曳網漁船および以西底曳網漁船ではC_bの値は0.700より大きい。C_pは各種漁船とも0.71〜0.75の間である。またC_ωでは揚網時の復原力を必要とする旋網漁船が最も大きい。船の重量が増すにつれて必然的にC_b,C_ωの値を大きくしている。2)総トン数当りの主機関馬力数は増加しているが船型の肥大化のために従来の船速を維持するにとどまっている。3)延繩釣漁船50トン以上100トン未満階層の代表であるイカ釣漁船において発電機出力は異常に増大し,集魚灯における過当競争を反映している。4)200トン未満の沖合底曳網漁船,以西底曳網漁船および旋網漁船,100トン未満の延繩釣漁船および一本釣漁船では総トン数当りの魚倉容積が減少傾向にある。遠洋底曳網漁船,刺網漁船そして100トン以上の延繩釣漁船,イカ釣漁船および200トン以上の一本釣漁船などでは反対に総トン数当りの魚倉容積が増加している。これらの漁船の貯蔵・運搬手段としての性能のそれぞれの傾向は漁業実態を反映したものである。5)旋網漁船をはじめ100トン以上の底曳網漁船では乗組員数が増加している。漁船漁業における漁獲努力偏重の機械化により漁獲量追求のための漁撈時間の延長となり労働強化となっている。6)各種漁船の船体停止距離および時間は船長に比例している。7)旋回所要時間は船長に比例し,船長65m未満の漁船では約3分以内である。8)各種漁船の静復原挺曲線を3状態について計算した結果底曳網漁船では満載状態よりも軽荷状態において復原力は小さい。おおむね船規模の大小で復原性能の良否が決っている。9)124トン沖合底引網漁船Bにおける運動性能は上下揺,横揺ともに軽荷状態のときよりも満載状態のときの方が√<L/λ>=0.7〜0.8で大きく揺れる。したがって安全性能は静的にも動的にも総合的に考える必要がある。10)現在わが国の漁船の性能は漁業生産力を発展させるための漁業における生産手段としての漁船と漁具の適正な均衡の上にあるのではなく,無制限な主漁具の大型化と操業の機械化合理化,さらには漁場への往復航海の短縮などの諸要求が漁船の性能として具現されたものである。したがって資源管理を念頭においた適正な漁業規模の調整を漁船と漁具の一体の中で行なうことにより漁船そのものの性能の向上がある。

    We are now familiar with the mathematical model as defined by Inoue for describing manoeuvring motion of the actual ship. In the model, normal force and moment are expressed as functions of the drift angle β, the angular velocity γ and their respective derivatives as shown in equation (2). It is a major task to presume accurate derivatives for the analysis of turning trial. This paper relates to a method of determining the derivatives corresponding with the turning trial data obtained, by means of a procedure of successive approximation calculated in two series i.e. transitionary and stationary states of motion. The results of calculation are shown in Table 2-3, and some considerations about the above subject are presented.

    It is noteworthy that the shipping water onto deck which occures when the relative wave elevation along the side of a boat gets being over the upper deck side line or bulwark top line is one of the important factors of the capsize of fishing boats. The experiments with a 2m radio controlled model boat in the wind waves were caried out to clarify the statistical properties of the relative wave elevation and the shipping water on deck. As the results of these experiments, the statistical model of the relative wave elevation and occurance of the shipping water were estimated by the analysis of the results of these experiments. The characteristics of these phenomena could be clarified as follows. 1) It was deduced that the variances of the relative wave elevation were large at the foreword of a ship hull in head and bow seas and at the sternward in the following and quartering seas and also, they were larger at weather side than at lee side in the bow, beam and quartering seas. 2) The probability of occurance of the shipping water has the similar tendency to the values mentioned above, however, there is no significant difference between at weather and lee side in their magnitude. 3) It is remarkable that the values of a frequency-band width parameter ε for the relative wave elevation is very large i.e. 0.6〜0.9.

    It is said that the statistics of wave heights follow their log-normal distribution. The main part of the distribution, however, fits in very good manner, the linearity is destroyed in the high wave height region. The reason of this distortion can be thought as follows ; the observation method, number of data or sampling, and meteorological condition and/or wave nature itself. Mostly the wave statistics are obtained from the ship's visual observations in the area settled in an ocean, and the number of observations is not enough. So the consecutive 6 hourly records of Station T (29°N, 135°E) for 10 years (1967-1976) are plotted, and are found that the data fit to log-normal distribution very well. Then the number of data was reduced to 1/2 through 1/16 at random, and found that the linearlity became shaky in the high wave height region. One reason of this distortion from the log-normal can be concluded by the result of data sampling. In these cases, extending the straight line of 10 through 95% ranges to the higher range may be reasonable. Annual extreme values are also investigated, and shown that the mean annual extreme value is nearly equal to the wave height corresponding to the percentage of (N-1)/N of all wave data.

    While a vessel is lying at her anchorage, it is a factor of great importance to reduce her swing movement so as to prevent dragging her anchor. For purpose of keeping away this danger, some basic steps, such as dropping her another anchor and using her main engine, are taken timely to meet existing condition. This report is intended to investigate the accurate way to control her in rough weather. The Doppler Docking Sonar equipped on the Training Ship "HOKUTO MARU" (5856.25 G.T., Turbine Engine 7000 PS 1) was combined with the gyro compass and the computer system. They were worked to make experiments on tracing her swing movement and getting some unique data.

    When buoys and other floating objects are placed in the ocean where they are easily effected by tides, it would be great help if the values of nessesary length and withstandable tention of the chain cable among other values could be easily calculated. That would make it much easier to plan and design such objects. In this experiment, chain cables were tested in a circulating water channel in various forms (mooring, towing, etc.), the forms and tension observed and then, at each inclination angle θ, the drag D_θ and lift L_θ were measured. The drag coefficient C_<Dθ> and lift coefficient C_<Lθ> were calculated using the following formulae. D_θ=1/2<C_<Dθ>ρAU^2> L_θ=1/2<C_<Lθ>ρAU^2> The aim of this experiment is to find a rough formula to calculate these forces.
