The reflection loss is shown as follows, Reflection loss=20log_10(p_0)/(p_1)where p_0 is the pressure of sound wave incident to the reflecting body and p_1 is the pressure of reflcted sound wave at the point in away from the relecting body. The ultrasonic wave reflection at fish-body is not caused only by the airbladder, but all the fish-body contributes to it. According to the theoretic examination and the experiment, the following experimental formula has been derived, Reflection loss fish-body L_p=20log_<10>√<λ/2r>・χ/b・2/Δρ・1/k where λ is the wave length, r the radius of curvature of the back of fish-body, b the length of fish-body, Δρ the difference between the density of fish-body and that of water, k the form-coefficient and χ the distance from the fish-body, 100cm. When the dimension of fish-body is much smaller than the wave-length, the reflection loss is shown as follows, L_p=20log_<10>λ^2χ/πυk_1・1/Δρ where υ is the volume of_ fish-body and k_1 is the formcoefficient. The reflection loss at the shoal of fish is shown as follows, L=20log_<10>√<λ/2r>・100/b・1/Δρ・1/k・1/χθ_0√<πln> where θ_0 is the effective beam angle,l the pulse length, n the density of shoal of fish and x the distance from the sound source to the shoal of fish. Then the technical method of measurement of the reflection loss at the shoal of fish is expressed. It is found that the reflection loss at the shoal of fish measured by that method is about 30db.

Since the marine radar and sounding machine became to be used for navigation, we have not particularly felt difficulty in finding the ship's position while coasting, in spite of wrong visiblity during day and night. However, in about 10〜20% case of coasting in Indonesian sea area, we cannot expect that the abovementioned instruments have now reached the stage of perfection as the assistant for pilotage. These reasons due to the following affairs.
