We examined the relationships between the initial hatch day of first-generation arrowhead scale (
Unaspis yanonensis) crawlers and the initial flowering day of the Okitsu Wase mandarini Citrus unshiui over a 34-year period. A positive linear relationship was observed between the initial hatch day of
U. yanonensis and the initial flowering day of the mandarin orange. We used the linear relationship, expressed as
Y=0.87
X+11.2 (
Y initial hatch day, iXi initial flowering day, April 20 was considered day 0) to predict the initial hatch day of
U. yanonensis and compared the predicted day with the observed initial hatch day in actual orchards. Crawlers began to occur in orchards within a few days of the predicted day. These results suggest that the initial flowering day of the mandarin orange can be used to predict the initial hatch day of larvae in actual orchards.
