JOURNAL FREE ACCESSExperiments were carried out to know the effect of aggregation on some ecological characters of the two closely related lady beetles, Epilachna sparsa orientalis and E. vigintioctomaculata.
These experiments were carried out under the condition of room temperature and natural daylength and larvae were fed with potato leaves.
The results obtained are summarized as follows:-
From these results, it may be concluded that these differences in some ecological characters between the two species were responsible for thedifference in the degree of aggregation of eggs within an egg mass.View full abstractDownload PDF (635K) -

JOURNAL FREE ACCESSA number of the so-called Tohoku hare, Lepus brachyurus angustidens HOLLISTER were collected in the mountain of Yamagata Prefecture from May, 1962 to September, 1964 in order to determine the breeding season, litter size and ovarian weight. The observation was made on 136 specimens. The results are as follows:
1) The gestation period of the animal extended from February to July and the young were born between April and August, being more frequent in May and June than in the other months. The average litter size was larger in the month in which the highest rate of birth occurred than in the other months.
2) The female matured sexually in about ten months after birth. Therefore, the first breeding season came next year.
3) The average number of embryo found in the uterus was 1.85 in 12 pregnant females and the largest number was 3. The number of the young in one birth was ordinarily 1 or 2 but sometimes 3.
4) The average litter size observed from the number of the captured young in the field was 1.86 and the largest litter size was 4. The litter size was the largest in May, being 2.50.
5) The weight of the ovary of both sides in the same female was almost equal. There was no difference of the ovarian weight between the uterine side with the fetus and the side without fetus.
6) The ovarian weight increased suddenly to 400mg in February. The smallest ovarian weight of the pregnant female was 470mg.View full abstractDownload PDF (488K) -

JOURNAL FREE ACCESSTheoretical consideration was made to make an economical and rational method of samplinginspection for pébrine control by making use of the characteristic of early eclosion of silkworm moths diseased with pébrine of a lot, and the description was made on the five factors of investigations which are considered to be indispensable and sufficient for establishing a new sampling inspection method:-
1. Infection formula of pébrine disease.2. Relationship between eclosion dates and percentage of diseased moths of a lot.
In this item, there include experiments which are performed in all cases which have from the case of heavily infected moths with high, diseased percentage to the case of the very lightly infected, and in an unhealthy lot.
3. Comparison of descending grade of percentages of diseased moths among heavily to lightly infected moths accrding to the retardation of eclosion dates by the results of experiments 2.
4. Comparison between weights of healthy undried cocoon, its silk layer and those of the diseased respectively.
5. Investigation on the hereditary transportation of parasites into silkworm eggs.
5A. The case of hibernating eggs.
5B. Comparison between common acid treated eggs and those of the chilled and the acid treated.
In order to perform above experiments, it is necessary to make moths with various desired percentages of diseased ones infected with pébrine at ones discretion. Therefore, the results of experiment on the numerical infection of spores to a silkworm larva per os which gave satisfactory answer were described. By this and the other correlated experiments, it became easy to obtain moths, apparently healthy despite infected with pébrine, and those with any desired disease percentages by oral infection at any instar.View full abstractDownload PDF (828K) -

JOURNAL FREE ACCESSIn this report we dealt with the result obtained from the experiments for establishing the successive rearing method of the rice stem borer, Chilo suppressalis WALKER.
The borers were reared on the artificial diet under aseptic condition and the experiments were designed to facilitate comparing the details of its growth and development between the inbreeding and rotational breeding.
The inbreeding of this borer resulted in the unfavorable effects on the larval growth, pupation, fecundity of the female and hatching of eggs in the second or third generation. The female moths of the fourth generation laid only few unfertilized eggs.
On the other hand in the rotational breeding the almost all vitalities of this borer were well maintained through successive 10 generations. Thus, it was concluded that the successive rearing of the rice stem borer could be possible by avoiding the bad effect of inbreeding, although more improvement of the diet might be necessary.View full abstractDownload PDF (611K) -

JOURNAL FREE ACCESSThe tobacco cutworm and the common armyworm have been reared successfully on the wheat bran diet to which ascorbic acid is added.
In both species, the larvae developed normally, pupated and emerged adults laid fertile egg masses when those larvae were reared on the diet with ascorbic acid. When the larvae were reared on the diet without ascorbic acid, they normally developed to older larval stage. However, in the final larval stage, the number of faecal pellets considerably decreased and the mean weights of the final larva, of prepupa and pupa were considerably smaller. No prepupae could pupate normally.
From these results, ascorbic acid in the artificial diet had slightly stimulating action for the older larvae. The effect of lacking of ascorbic acid becomes evident especially at the period of the moulting for pupation. This indicates that ascorbic acid was necessary to promote the moulting of prepupae of the tobacco cutworm and the common armyworm.View full abstractDownload PDF (2233K) -

JOURNAL FREE ACCESSEmbryonic tissues of green rice leafhopper Nephotettix cincticeps UHLER were cultivated for over 4 months in vitro. Development in the explanted embryonic tissues occurred at both the cellular and tissue levels. Nine types of cells, 5 of epithelial cells, 1 fibroblast and 3 wandering cells, grew from explanted tissues. Epithelial cells formed cell sheets, and fibroblasts formed networks. Wandering cells spread widely outside the epithelial cell sheets. Mitoses were frequently observed at the periphery of growing cell sheets. Multipolar mitoses were occasionally observed. Explanted tissues showed contraction movements during the entire period of cultivation. Considerable morphological changes including the formation of hollow spherical vesicles, occurred in the explanted tissues during cultivation.View full abstractDownload PDF (6680K) -

JOURNAL FREE ACCESSInvestigation was carried out on the difference of substrate specificity among isozymes with different blood acid-phosphatase, classified by agar-gel electrophoresis, and on the variance of substrate specificity in accordance with the growth of silkworm, Bombyx mori L. The results obtained are as follows:
1) None of the isozymes acts on β-GP, but all, except OO-type, have strong activity on α-NP and G-1-P. The activity of OO-type is lower than the other isozymes and particularly its activity value on α-NP is about one-fifth of CC and DD-type. The ratio of α-NP to NPP in OO-type is about 0.3, in AA-type it is 0.4-0.6 and in CC and DD-type it is about 0.8.
2) Not only in the case of α-NP as substrate but also in the case of NPP, the enzyme activity which begins decreasing at matured stage of larva, is not detected at middle pupal stage. Concerning the ratio of α-NP to NPP, CC and DD-type get to resemble OO-type at pupal stage.
3) That there is such difference in the ratio of α-NP to NPP is because that in the case with NPP as substrate there exists a band acting specificially on NPP (NPP-ase) besides the active band (α-NP-ase) detectable in the case with α-NP as substrate, and that the activities of both enzymes might be controlled by different genes respectively. It was also found that the ratio of α-NP to NPP changes in accordance with metamorphosis because the decrease of the activities of α-NP-ase and NPP-ase with metamorphosis does not coincide, but the former decreases in earlier stage.View full abstractDownload PDF (699K) -
