To develop new guidelines and teaching materials for Homemaking Education course, we examined the economic environment and economic behavior of 1, 107 urban junior high school students by asking them about their pocket money. 1.The mean monthly allowance was 2, 449 Yen.About 70% of the students received it on a monthly basis.They also have temporary allowances(mean:4, 380 Yen)and non-cash allowance such as gift certificates.Thus, the mean total pocket money was more than 7, 000 Yen. 2.To analyze spending behavior, we surveyed shopping behavior for one week.The mean number of shops was 1.96.Shopping items purchased were books, drinks, candy, playthings, clothing, amusement, eating-out, and others in descending order.Their monthly spending exceeded 3, 000 Yen over their allowance.Most things were paid in cash.However, some were paid by a variety of cards including credit cards of their parents.Most spending was done in retail stores, convenience stores, and automatic vending machines. 3.More than one-third of the students were not satisfied with the amount of pocket money.Some junior high school students increased their pocket money by obtaining satisfactory school grades.
