The purpose of this research is to understand the characteristics of Japanese academic entrepreneurs and explore support measures for them by their entrepreneurial motivation type through a quantitative survey. Financial rewards type is characterized by sufficient efforts to improve rewards, but insufficient efforts to innovate research and engage in creative or experimental things. Research expansion type is characterized by the fact that entrepreneurial orientation is displayed, but the degree of display is not high. Independent research type has a strong awareness of research efforts, but lacks the behavior to stay ahead of competitors. Low motivations type is less risk-taking and less committed to innovation. This research has novelty in that it focused on individual academic entrepreneurs, found that they had different characteristics by type, and explored support measures for each type, while most of the previous research has focused on the process of spin-off or the role of organizations.
