In the first, introductory part, we will describe how the contact between German and Japanese colleagues in the domain of subject didactics/subject pedagogy was established and how it developed over time.
In the second part of the paper, the concepts of Subject Didactics and of General Subject Didactics will be outlined, as seen from the German point of view - indicating how these developed, what their basic features are and what kind of theoretical background and empirical research findings it is based upon. In particular, the need of merging top-down and bottom-up procedures are highlighted. This basically equals the goal and the content of our two keynote lectures which we gave in March 2024 in Japan, plus the many professional discussions, formal as well as informal - aside.
After considering in the third part what implications and consequences this comparative approach has or might have for the different subject didactics as academic disciplines, the fourth part will finally deal specifically with perspectives for Japan, nationally and internationally, and with potential collaborations in the future.
