A 6-month weight-reducing program was designed and implemented for 14 middleaged men of a work place. Individualized sessions for nutritional education were conducted by registered dietitians, each of which generally lasted for 30 minutes and held once a month. Prior to the session, dietitians studied in detail test results of the subjects and problems noted in the subjects. meal records. They then delineated dietary habits and life styles that each subject should preferably correct on his own and asked him to select specific aspects that he should focus on before the next session. At each session, the registered dietitian provided him with knowledge and skills that were necessary to improve his dietary habits. The program was continued for 6 months. By implementing this program, 11 subjects lost bodyweight and 13 successfully reduced their waist circumference. No differences were noted in nutritional intake before and after the program ; but improvements were noted in the dietary habits and life style that had a bearing on their energy balance and well-balanced meals. It was also possible to reduce body weight by focusing on specific problems or taking step-by-step approaches to the solution.
