The objective was to assess associations between food diversity with intakes of nutrients and food groups in independent elderly people. In May 2015, 2-day dietary records were collected from 27 men and 54 women aged more than 60 years living around Kanazawa city. Food diversity was positively and significantly associated with nutrient adequacy of calcium, iron, vitamin A, and C. Mean (standard deviation) food item of men and women who consumed more than tentative dietary goal for preventing life-style related disease for dietary fiber and potassium was 26.3 (2.4) and 27.7 (5.6) items/day, respectively. Mean (standard deviation) food item of men and women who consumed vegetables more than 350 g/day and fruits more than 100 g/day was 25.4 (2.2) and 26.6 (5.1) items/day, respectively. Our results suggested that consumption of various foods led to greater improvements in overall nutrient adequacy.
