Objective: Sodium valproate granules (VPA granules) are extremely hygroscopic, deliquesce slowly in the air, and aggregate depending on temperature and humidity conditions. Although pharmacists are required to maintain drug storage conditions until the time of dispensing, they cannot keep track of the actual storage conditions maintained by the patients thereafter. Therefore, we investigated the actual temperature and humidity of the storage conditions maintained by the patients after delivery of the VPA granules.

Methods: We conducted a prospective observational study at Kameda Medical Center on pediatric outpatients who were prescribed VPA granules from July 5, 2018 to February 20, 2019. A portable data logger capable of measuring temperature and humidity for 24 h was delivered at the time of dispensation. At the following visit, the data logger was collected, and data about temperature and humidity were obtained. We defined the suitable temperature as 1.0-30.0℃ and suitable humidity as 75.0% or less.

Results: In this study, 13 patients were included. In total, 18 data loggers were distributed, and the return rate was 100.0%. The storage temperature was outside the suitable range in 0.8% of the total observation time whereas the humidity exceeded 75.0% in 1.7% of the total observation time.

Conclusion: Storage of medications after dispensation was evaluated, and certain temperature and humidity deviations were observed. As storing a drug in an inappropriate environment changes the nature of the drug, affecting its efficacy and safety, it is necessary to educate patients on the proper methods to store oral medications.

Objective: The measurement of compounded topical medications’ uniformity is an important component of quality assessment. This study was aimed to evaluate appropriate mixing time for external preparations using a planetary centrifugal mixer.

Methods: In order to evaluate the product uniformity of mixtures of five different steroid cream (Antebate®, Myser®, Methaderm®, Lidomex®, and Locoid®) with three different heparinoid oil-based cream (Hirudoid®, “Nichi-Iko” cream and “Nipro” cream), steroid cream and heparinoid oil-based cream (5 g each) were added into a 13 mL container and mixed using the mixer (NanKo Rentaro NRE-120®, THINKY) at rotation speed of 800 rpm and revolution speed of 2,000 rpm. We sampled 0.1 g of the mixture from three spots (top, middle, and bottom portions) of the container then, measured the steroid content by HPLC method. The yield value points of each cream and heparinoid oil-based cream were also measured by spread meter.

Results: Our results showed that when the coefficient of variation (CV) is less than 15.2 %, a mixing time of at least 120 s was required to achieve proper mixing to obtain the permissible limit of steroid cream and heparinoid oil-based cream. Also the greater difference of the yield value between steroid cream and heparinoid oil-based cream tended to be mixed easier.

Conclusions: These results suggest that the spread ability of steroid cream and heparinoid oil-based cream affects the mixing efficiency of a planetary centrifugal mixer.

A 6-year pharmaceutical education system was initiated over a decade ago in Japan because highly skilled pharmacists are needed by communities and hospitals. The current national examination for pharmacists consists of three sections, and its primary purpose is to assess the ability of students to apply the pharmaceutical knowledge they attained at university or college to real-world practice in medical care. We aimed to examine the attitudes of clinical pharmacists working in community pharmacies and hospitals regarding the practical section of the national examination for pharmacists. An online survey was conducted between November 2018 and January 2019. The results of this survey showed that 15 out of the 50 total pharmacists surveyed attempted to answer or skimmed through some questions from the practical section of the 103rd national examination for pharmacists. On the contrary, a little less than half of the pharmacists disregarded the examination content. The participants answered 10 questions extracted from the 103rd national examination that were related to real-world practice. They considered most information to be necessary knowledge in clinical situations, e.g., that concerning drug and food interactions. Furthermore, self-medication and treatment at home that are and will be increasingly required for pharmacists in the future were considered relevant and important.

Objective: The internet isflooded with drug information; however, some of it isinappropriate and thisinadequate information could expose the public to health hazards. Therefore, we conducted research on the idea of transmitting drug information to the public via the internet and the current state of the information currently provided by each academic society relevant to the field of Medical Informatics.

Methods: A questionnaire was mailed to the website managers for the website of 129 specialist medical societies, all members of the Japanese Association of Medical Sciences. We conducted our research between October to November 2018. We investigated each website administrator’s opinion about offering drug information for consumers via the internet and what information each academic society is currently providing.

Results: The effective response rate was 43.4% (56/129 groups). Most respondents thought that drug information overflowed in the current Internet society. Moreover, more than half of the respondents thought that the quality of drug information transmitted to the public wasinadequate. Currently, 30 of the academic groupssurveyed are providing information to the public. When providing information, they did not refer to the “Drug Guide for Patients” much. More than 80% of respondents said they would cooperate with linking to the information provided to the public. However, each academic society felt there would be many problems with doing so such as the need for a system to check the contents of the information provided and a system to perform maintenance.

Conclusion: The results showed that the website administrators recognized that there is a need to improve the quality of and system for providing drug information to the public. We believe that an integrated information system can be constructed by aggregating the drug information held by each academic society. However, this cannot be realized without first solving many problems.

Clarifying the current state of ophthalmic solutions and the handling of eye drops is important for the proper use of ophthalmic solutions. In this study, a questionnaire survey was conducted from May 2018 to February 2019 on 200 ophthalmic inpatients who provided consent. In total, 36.5% of the patients were dissatisfied with the usability of ophthalmic containers due to their hard material andthe difficulty of releasing the ophthalmic solution. In addition, 43.0% of the patients repliedthat they hadlearnedfrom medical professionals, such as doctors and pharmacists, about the handling of eye drops, whereas 45.0% reported failing to apply ophthalmic solutions onto their eyes correctly. Only 2.0% of the respondents answeredthat they hadconsulteddoctors or pharmacists about the use of ophthalmic solutions. These findings underscore the current problems about patients’ satisfaction with ophthalmic solutions andhandling of eye drops. Therefore, pharmacists may needto be actively involvedin patients’ selection of ophthalmic solutions andinstruct them regarding usage.

Objective: While pharmacies focus on interpersonal work, patients need to process a lot of information. Therefore, it is important for the pharmacy to provide information according to the situation. This study was conducted for the purpose of providing a video and paper media, and clarifying that it is useful to provide information in various mediums about the method of administering the powdered medicine, which requires an understanding of the operation.

Method: Conducted a survey for those who brought prescriptions for infants from March 2016 to about a year and a half. We compared and verified the understanding of the medication method for infants between the paper medium group and the moving image medium group.

Results: Differences in the background between the two media use groups were clarified, and path analysis confirmed differences in the factors that affect the reliable administration of each medium to infants. It was revealed that the evaluation of moving image media was higher than the comparison between the groups in terms of usability. Although there was no difference in the ability to use the medium at his own pace, the moving images were significantly higher in understanding the motion.

Discussion: There is a limit to the understanding of motions with a single explanation at the pharmacy counter. It was confirmed in this study that information provision using a medium that can be used depending on the situation of the patient is useful as a complementary role in medication instruction. Providing information while appropriately combining information provision in various media is thought to reduce the burden on patients and contribute to improved adherence.
