In this paper the writers deal with the morphology and biology of
Eteophilus notaroides KÔNO which is found at Tomakomai, Hokkaido, Japan.
The larvae of this species which live in unopened male flowers of Populus maximowiczii were first found by Dr. S. CHIBA in the green house, at Kuriyama, Hokkaido, in April, 1966.
They were feeding on Immature pollen. Many larvae collected on April 22 from the male flower of
Populus maximowiczii, were reared by the writers in an outside unheated insectary at Kuriyama, Hokkaido. The larvae are yellow to pale orange in colour. Full-grown larvae leave the male flowers, and descend to the soil at the beginning of May. Usually pupation occurs within 7 or 8 days after the larvae have descended to the ground.
The first adults emerged on May 14, 1966 in the insectary.
The larvae which are probably pollen eaters occur on the male aments of
Populus maximowiczii, lowering the density of pollen in the open pollination.
Therefore, the larvae frequently do a great damage in that the pollen to be collected may suffer a heavy loss.
