The diurnal variations in the serum levels of 13 chemical constituents were studied at interval of four hours, from 6: 00 AM to next 2: 00 AM, in yellow-tail (Seriola quinqueradiata).One group of yellow-tail was reared with raw fish and another with compound diet as food.The fish were not fed on the day of experiment and 3 fish for each group were sacrificed at each time. The diurnal variations in the fish fed on raw fish were various in pattern with different constituents.For most of the constituents, the serum levels were higher in daytime and lower in night.The time of a day at blood sampling should be strictly chosen for determining more accurately constituents of the serum levels. The diurnal variations in the fish fed on the compound diet were generally different and indistinct in pattern with those in the fish fed on raw fish.The significance of the differences in the diurnal variation between both groups were discussed to ameliorate the compound diet.
Kamohara (1940) described Trichiurus muticus Gray based on specimens of unknown locality, and Iwai and Hotta (1950) reported two specimens of the fish from the Pacific coast of Shikoku, Japan. Characters of their specimens suggest that they are not Eupleurogrammus muticus but are Tentoriceps cristatus (Klunzinger).Examination of Iwai and Hotta's specimens confirmed their identity with T.cristatus from the South China Sea and the Straits of Malacca.Pseudoxymetopon sinensis Chu and Wu from the East China Sea is another synonym of T.cristatus. Re-examination is needed on the specific name of Eupleurogrammus species inhabiting Korean waters, which has been commonly identified as E.muticus.
Karyotype and cellulose-acetate electrophoresis of hemoglobins were analized for loaches of the genus Cobitis (Cobitidae). C.biwae has a diploid number of48consisted of1pairs of meta-submetacentrics and3pairs of elocentrics;C.taenia striata has50chromosomes consisted of8pairs of meta-submetacentrics and17pairs of telocentrics;C.taenia taenia has86chromosomes consisted of32pairs of meta-submetacentrics and11pairs of telocentrics;C.delicata has50chromosomes consisted of9pairs of meta-submetacentrics and16pairs of subtelo-telocentrics. In the electrophretic pattern, hemoglobins of Cobitis in Japan have three components.In the pattern, C.biwae is similar to C.taenia striata.
Four specimens of malformed flatfishes collected in coastal waters of Iwate Prefecture are reported.They are: Paralichthys olivaceus of complete ambicoloration accompanied by hooked process behind upper eye;Verasper moseri of partial ambicoloration;Microstomas achne of staining ambicoloration accompanied by nearly complete lacking of fin rays in dorsal, caudal, and anal fins;and Limanda puncta tissima lacking caudal peduncle and fin.
The two specimens of Ritodeus suigensis (Mori) collected in the lower reaches of the Ashida, River, Hiroshima.Prefecture, October1975, are briefly described.The original locality of the species is in Korea. En Japan, the species has so far been known only from the tributaries of the Yoshii Riber, Okayama Prefecture.The Ashida River is found to be another habitat of this species, suggesting occurrence of the species in other streams in Cbugoku district in Japan.
