Two species of goby belonging to the genus Astrabe are described from Japan as new speces, A. flavimaculata and A. fasciata A. flavimaculata is distinguishable from A. lactisella, the type species and hitherto the only known species of the genus, in that it has no protrusion on the upper posterior part of the dermal fold along the upper margin of the eye, fewer scales in a longtudinal row, predorsal scales, scales on the belly, a narrower white transverse band across the base of the pectoral fins, and in life yellow markings on a dark brown ground colour except for the white transverse band across the base of the pectoral fins. A. fasciata is distin-guishable from A. lactisella in that it has fewer scales in a transverse row, a narrower scaled area on the lateral side of the body, a narrower white transverse band across the base of the pectoral fins, and a white transverse band across the anterior part of the 1st dorsal fin extending to the ventral side of the body.

A new species of the lanternshark Etmopterus splendidus is described. This new species is distinguished from the congeners by the combination of the following characters: distance from snout tip to 1st dorsal spine much less than distance from the spine to upper caudal origin; caudal fin short, much less than head length; dermal denticles on lateral side of trunk with very small, erect thornlike, conical crowns, those on trunk arranged in regular longitudinal rows, and distinctly arranged on interdorsal area and on lateral trunk of interspace between 2nd dorsal and caudal, but not arranged in regular longitudinal rows on dorsal surface of interorbital and on abdomen; color in life purplish-black above and with inconspicuous bluish-black flank marks and three other bluish-black marks at base of caudal fin and along its axis; shape of flank marks narrow anterior to, but broader posterior to pelvic fins.

A new cobitidid, Cobitis elazigensis, is described from Anatolian Turkey in the province of Elazig. The new species differs from all other members of the genus by having the following combination of characters: two Canestrini's scales on the pectoral fin, a suborbital spine with a dorso-lateral branch (rarely simple and unbranched), large size, over 180mm total length, total vertebrae 47-49, lateral spots reduced or absent, a spot at the upper caudal fin base, scales longer than wide with a small focus, dorsal fin rays III, 5-6, usually 6, ventral fin rays III, 6-7, usually 6, and pectoral fin rays I, 7-9.

Data on the individual variation and changes with growth in proportions and mor-phology are presented for the poorly known Apristurus longicephalus, and compared with those of other species. A.longicephalus is concluded to be a distinct species without synonyms, charac-terized by its long snout, widely separate nostrils, long caudal fin, short abdomen, very sparse teeth, and low number of monospondylous vertebrae. It is a species of small size, maturing at about 42cm in total length.

A cladistic analysis of all known genera in the Carangidae was made mostly on the basis of external and osteological characters. Polarity for each character was determined by outgroup comparison using the echeneoids as the first outgroup and the Nematistiidae as the second. In the Carangini, there were four hypothesized monophyletic groups at the rank of sub-tribe. Parastro-mateus is the sister group of the remaining twenty-one carangine genera which are divided into three groups. The first group consists of a single genus Megalaspis. The second group is com-posed of Trachurus, Decapterus, Selar, Atule, Selaroides, Pantolabus, Alepes, Hemicaranx, Pseudo-caranx, Kaiwarinus, and Chloroscombrus. The third group comprises Uraspis, Caranx, Gnathano-don, Carangichthys, Carangoides, Atropus, Ulua, Alectis, and Selene.

A total of 54 postlarval, 12 juvenile and six young Lates japonicus were collected in the Shimanto estuary from August 1985 to January 1987. The larvae (4.3-7.6mm SL) and juveniles (8.1-28.0mm SL) occurred only in areas with eelgrass beds from late July to middle August. Temperatures and salinities at waters where any number of them were collected ranged from 27.8 to 31.9°C and from 2.8 to 18.2‰, respectively. The larvae are very similar in general morphology to those of Mugilidae and some of Gobiidae, but are distinguished from others by the spines of preopercle, position of the anus and pigmentation patterns in the posterior part of body.

A total of 343 larval and juvenile Lateolabrax latus (9.2-27.0mm TL) was collected with a small seine in surf zones of Tosa Bay. They are very similar in general morphology to those of the closely related L. japonicus, but can be distinguished from them by the distribution pattern of melanophores on the tail, head spination, proportion of head length to standard length and the 15 or 16 dorsal fin soft-rays. They occurred in surf zones of Tosa Bay from early January to middle May, being most abundant in middle April. Temperatures and salinities of waters where any number of them were collected ranged from 12.2 to 24.0°C and from 23.7 to 34.5‰, respectively. Larval and juvenile L. latus have not been reported so far in coastal and shallow waters, and eelgrass beds of southern Japan. It may be possible that they have been confounded with those of L. japonicus. Their occurrence seems to be limited in extremely shallow waters such as surf zones.

Scale morphology, growth and the squamation chronology are described for the hermaphroditic fish Rivulus marmoratus reared in the laboratory. The scales are round or oval shaped cycloid type, and their sizes are about 0.3-1.0mm in diameter. The number of ridges increases more rapidly relative to the body growth of the fish in early stages, but this increase is proportionate to growth subsequently. Three loci of scale development have been identified. The scales first appeared on the center of the parietal region at 8 days after hatching. The second locus of scale formation was on the lateral line of the posterior end of the caudal peduncle. A third locus was later observed on the lower right corner of the operculum. The final squamation was completed at 6 weeks after hatching.

Melanophores of young Rhodeus ocellatus ocellatus have the ability to respond by melanosome dispersion to the direct action of visible light. The effective wavelength within visible light region for inducing melanosome dispersion was investigated using melanophores located around the base of the dorsal fin of young fish set on the stage of a light microscope. The melanophores were exposed to light of various wavelengths (420-680nm) but of the same intensity by placing interference filters under the condenser diaphragm. The most effective wavelength was about 420nm. Longer wavelengths were less effective for the induction of melanosome dispersion.

Reproductive behavior, distribution of spawning grounds and possibility of repro-ductive homing were studied and examined in the river sculpin, Cottus hangiongensis. The court-ship, spawning behavior and parental care of this species, observed under artificial stream con-ditions using a fiber-scope, were quite similar to those of several congenous species already reported. In a natural river, the spawning grounds were restricted to the lower reaches within the distribu-tion range of the species. Slightly before the spawning period, mature individuals inhabiting more upper reaches than the spawning area migrated downstream to the spawning area. The upstream movement of many individuals, apparently downstream migrants only, was observed just after the spawning period. By tracing the location at recapture, it was detected that a total of 11 marked individuals (10 females and 1 male) migrated downstream before spawning, and after spawning they migrated upstream and returned to the original home sections. This suggests the ability for reproductive homing.

Distribution of the salangid fish, Neosalanx reganius Wakiya et Takahasi was investigated in the rivers around Ariake Sound which is located in western Kyushu. They were only found in the Chikugo River and the Midori River located about 50km apart from each other and were regarded to be endemic to those rivers. They inhabit the tidal area of the downstream occur-ring mainly in fresh water, although some are found in the waters having low seawater con-centration near the mouth of the rivers. Morphological examination revealed no meristic difference, but some statistically significant differences in the body proportions between the two populations indicating their entire isolation from each other.
