JOURNAL FREE ACCESSParabrotula tanseimaru sp.nov.(Zoarcoidei: Parabrotulidae) is described from Sagami Bay, central Japan, as the second species of the genus. The new species is readily distinguished from the known species, P. plagiophthalma, by dorsal fin ray counts (44-50 vs. 37-43) and higher total vertebral counts (64-73 vs. 54-64). P. tanseimaru is viviparous, occurring in pseudoceanic meso-/bathypelagic depths and feeding primarily on copepods.View full abstractDownload PDF (655K) -

JOURNAL FREE ACCESSNaturally spawned eggs of the Pacific saury, Cololabis saira, were collected in the field and reared in a tank to examine daily periodicity of growth increment formation in the otolith. Larvae were 6.9mm in knob length at hatching. Their otoliths (sagittae) were 31μm in radius and had 3-6 faint concentric rings. They started feeding within two days and grew at a rate of 1.1mm/day on average through larval and juvenile stages feeding on rotifers, Artemia nauplii, and artificial diets. Otolith growth increments showed a concentric pattern with a distance of 3.5-5.0μm between two adjacent increments. The number of growth increments was almost equal to a known age in days plus 4 or 5. A regression line of number of increments (N) on known age in days (D) between 0-30 days after hatching was N=4.81+1.01D, which shows that one increment was deposited per day.View full abstractDownload PDF (3961K) -

JOURNAL FREE ACCESSAnatomical, histological and EM studies are presented on the male seminal vesicles of 111 species of gobies (Gobiidae, Teleostei). These vesicles, attached to the sperm-ducts, are lined with an excretory epithelium composed of three types of cells: 1) columnar cells with giant Golgi cisterns in the form of large rings apical to the nucleus; 2) excretory cells with remarkably interdigitative basal lamina, that resemble sperm-duct cells; and 3) groups of interstitial, Leydig-type cells that possibly form a part of the mesorchial gland. Morphologically the vesicles appear to be taxa specific, the simplest one in the form of a few tubules on the sperm duct, and the most elaborate one forming large, wing-like structures, with an elaborate mass of passages. In many species the final form of the vesicles develops during the fish ontogenesis; in others, the form of this organ does not change during the lifetime of the fish. With the onset of reproduction, secretion and sperm accumulate in the tubule of the seminal vesicle and are expelled from there onto the eggs during fertilization. JOURNAL FREE ACCESSThis paper describes both embryonic development and newly hatched larval morphology of the little dragon sculpin Blepsias cirrhosus. The eggs of B. cirrhosus are almost spherical, 3.0-3.2mm in diameter, and have a yolk color of burnt orange. Development is very slow, being especially sluggish once the embryo appears. The embryo begins forming from the 10th day. In size, the early embryo is less than 1/6 of the yolk's circumference. Incubation at 10°C takes about 200 days, 50 days shorter than the incubation period in a natural environment, with a mean water temperature of 11°C. The notochord length of newly-hatched larvae averages 11.1mm. The larvae are developed so fully that the notochord is already flexing and the caudal and pectoral rays are forming.View full abstractDownload PDF (563K) -

JOURNAL FREE ACCESSEmbryonic and larval development of the pike eel, Muraenesox cinereus, are described following natural fertilization in the laboratory. Eggs are pelagic and spherical with diameters from 1.8 to 2.1mm and have a colorless, transparent chorion and numerous oil globules. Hatching occurs 36 hours after spawning at a water temperature of 25°C. Newly-hatched larvae are 5.8mm in mean TL, and the number of myomeres averages 86. Absorption of the yolk is completed 8 days after hatching, at 9-10mm TL. Larvae survive for 10 days without food supply. At this time they are 11.2mm in mean TL and have 97+55=152 myomeres, which is a diagnostic character of this species. JOURNAL FREE ACCESSSexual patterns of the parrotfish, Calotomus japonicus, were studied using fifteen specimens collected in February and April, 1990, near Makurazaki, Kagoshima Prefecture. The males ranged from 265 to 345mm SL, and were larger than the females on average. Most females ranged from 202 to 260mm SL, but a female of 305mm SL was obtained. Sexual dichromatism was conspicuous. Histological examination of the gonads and low values of gonado-somatic indices of both males and females indicated that they were not in spawning season. It was concluded that C. japonicus is a protogynous hermaph-rodite, because all male specimens had secondary testes. It was pointed out that the present species has a weak size-sex relationship.Because the specimens examined did not include primary males, it is suggested that primary males are relatively rare, if they occur at all.View full abstractDownload PDF (3090K) -
