Maximum phonation time, mean air flow rate and phonation quotient (a value calculated by dividing vital capacity by phonation time) were investigated in 150 normal school children at three grades, the first, the third and the fifth. The value of the three tests revealed a skewed distribution which required normalization by a root transformation for maximum phonation time and a logarythmic transformation for mean air flow rate and phonation quotient.
    The following conclusions appear justified:
    (1) Normal standards of maximum phonation time, mean air flow rate and phonation quotient have been determined.
    (2) Statistically significant differences in the test values were found between the first, the third and the fifth grades.
    (3) No significant differences in the test values were found in general between the male and female subjects.
