The relationship between psychoacoustic evaluation of hoarse voices and acoustic indices (pitch perturbation quotient, PPQ; and amplitude perturbation quotient, APQ) was investigated by the rating and paired comparison methods. Synthesized voices were utilized in order to control the acoustic indices.
The results indicated that some psychoacoustic paramenters show a strong correlation with the acoustic indices. Especially a linear correlation was seen between the rating scores of“grade of hoarseness”and the logarithm of the values of PPQ. This suggests that Weber-Fechner's law might be applied to psychoacoustic evaluation of PPQ.
As a method of evaluation, paired comparison was better than rating from the view-point of consistency among the listeners.
