The progress of two-phase research is divided into four stages. These periods are 1948-1959, 1960-1970, 1971-1979, and 1980-1988. In this 2nd Report the characteristics of each stages are summerized briefly. Also researches on water circulation in boilers and the relative velocity between gas and liquid in the pre-historical period before 1947 are described in relation to the researches on two-phase flow in the first period. The development and characteristics of researchs in the second period are discussed.

Coal-water mixture (CWM), a liquid fuel produced by mixing together coal and water with an aid of surfactant, has many advantages for storage and handling of coal and, moreover, for beneficiation of coal, transforming coal into a more appropriate form to handle and burn. Following the development of the coal-oil mixture (COM), a research program to develop a CWM technology has been made by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. for the past decade, covering the CWM production, transportation, storage and combustion.
This paper reviews an outline of the CWM research and it's results, specifically focusing on the handling process of two-CWM consisting of fine particles of coal and water.

The structure of turbulence was investigated experimentally in a particle laden turbulent boundary layer flowing vertically. Measurements were made on motions of particles and fluid. Also, spectra of fluid turbulence were obtained. It was found that instability occurring in the outer-layer causes large fluctuations in fluid and particle motions and that spectrum components at high wave numbers become larger due to the presence of particles.
