The aim of this study was to determine the appropriate lighting conditions in an assumed office environment considering work efficiency and multiple levels of arousal. Eight healthy male college students participated in this study. The experimental conditions were correlated color temperatures of 3000 K and 6700 K, and illuminance levels of 400 lx and 750 lx. Each set of conditions was tested in both the morning and afternoon periods, for a total of fourlighting conditions. Work efficiency was evaluated based on contingent negative variation (CNV) using reaction time and error rate, and evaluations considered arousal level as assessed by alpha wave ratio, average amplitude of the early CNV component, heart rate variability, and level of drowsiness. Based on our results, the recommended illuminance is 3000 K at 750 lx in the morning and 3000 K at 400 lx in the afternoon.

This study compared the walking indices between with and without own verbal counting in 28 healthy adults (66.1± 8.4 years). Walking data were obtained using footswitches set in the participants’ shoes. Stride time (ST), coefficient　of variation of ST (STCV) and fractal scaling index (α) were calculated. ST and α were significantly correlated　with age (r=-0.47~-0.42, p＜0.05). When participants were divided into two groups by STCV and α, walking with　verbal counting significantly reduced the STCV of the higher STCV group, and increased the α of the lower α group.

We examined the effects of moderate exercise on the performance of mental tasks (a simple addition in a continuous fashion (SAC), a simple addition in a discrete fashion (SAD), and a visual memory task (VM)). Fifteen college students were required to perform each task before and after the 10 min rest or exercise. In the SAC task, the number of responses significantly increased in exercise condition. Multiple regression analysis revealed that “exercise” affected the number of responses as an independent factor. On the other hand, the performances of both SAD and VM tasks were not influenced by prior exercise. These results suggest that moderate exercise raised the arousal level, and this could be enabled to allocate attention to a more wide range space.

The purpose of this study was to reveal the relation between the characteristics of emotional contagion and the mirror system activity. Thirty-one university students participated in this experiment. Emotional vocalizations and video of hand reaching and grasping a cup were presented to the participants. Facial electromyography (EMG) as emotional contagion index was recorded while presenting emotional vocalizations. Mu rhythm desynchronization in electroencephalogram (EEG) as mirror system activity index was recorded while presenting the video. The result shows significant correlation between the activity of facial EMG and desynchronization of mu rhythm, suggesting a person who is likely to be affected with emotional vocalizations also shows high mirror activity.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the correlation between physical strength and academic performance in Japanese elementary school children while simultaneously obtaining basic data on physical strength and academic performance. Statistically significant correlations were found between various fitness scores and various academic scores with 5th and 6th grade elementary school boys. The correlations were seen between standing jump test scores, side step test scores, as well as sit-up test scores and many academic scores with 5th grade elementary school girls. With 6th grade girls, the correlations were seen between side step test scores, multi-stage fitness as well as flexibility test scores and various academic scores. These results indicate that correlations exist between physical strength and academic performance. However, it appears to be weak.
