    Various studies made in the field of growth and development have been reviewed in order to proceed critical discussions to analyze the current standing of this research area, besides to foresee, as a personal opinion, the possible future of growth and development. Subtopics to be covered are : 1) definition 2) measurent 3) historical obsevations 4) growth and development in various locations, 5) follow-up study of growth line, 6) maturity of sex and bone, 7) attributing factors and 8) growth and development-present and future. In 1962, the Japanese Society of Physical Educatjon held it's 13th conference. At this convention a new divison was organized to study human growth and development in physical educatlon by a group of scholars sharing the same views on this subject. However, a clear definition of "growth and development" has not been established. The situation where time and space meet is important factor in the study of growth and development, probably more than in any other field of physical education. The dimension of time consists of trends of changing generations. In dealing with the dimension of space, the issues include weather, society, environment, race, and life style; which must be taken into consideration as affecting factors. The fleld of education, medicine, psychology, sociology, philosophy, religion and art are also related to the study of growth and development. From each of these various fields, different viewpoints could be given. However, the physical and medical sciences shall be dealt with in thls paper.

    The effects of the dynamic training on mechanical responces in human leg extensor muscles were investigated. The load for the training was provided by the method of L.T. Delorme. The mechanical power and force-velocity relationship on eleven males were followed up for 8 months as training of leg muscles was given. The maximal power, force and velocity at its peak and force-velocity relationship were derived from Hill's characteristic equation. The maximal strength at the right angle of knee joint and the maximal velocity were measured individually. The effects of training were as follows : 1. The curves of force-velocity and force-power significantly increased by the training. 2. This training presented l3.7 % of increment in the maximal isometric strength, 9.6 % in the maximal velocity and 26.8 % in the maximal mechanical power. 3. Alternative pattern in the maximal mechanical power was similar to that in force exerted at the peak of the power, the increment ratios of which entirely agreeing each otber. Therefore it could be considered that the exerted force was an important role to obtain maximal mechanical power and its increment.

    The mechanism behind the process of muscular fatigue in maximum voluntary contractions was studied. Maximum strength in thumb adduction was recorded by use of a resistance strain gauge transducer, and action potential was recorded using 10mm diameter silver disk electrode. The following results were obtained : 1. The amplitude of action potential evoked by ulnar nerve stimulation (M.wave) during rhythmic voluntary contractions was reduced. During recovery process after fatigue, the size of evoked action potential was returned to resting level before exercise. 2. The reduction in the size of evoked action potential was found to have been obtained by sustained voluntary contractions. 3. These findings differ from those based on the work of Merton (1954) who stated that evoked action patentials were not reduced during sustained voluntary contractions. 4. The current results, mentioned above, support the views of Naess and Storm-Mathisen (1955) and Stephens and Taylor (1972) that the reduction in evoked action potentials indicated the neuromuscular junction failure (neuromuscular block).

    In previous studies for male adults, it was indicated that Rohrer's index for a shorter man tended to be larger than those for a taller one. Rohrer's index is theoretically said to reveal the body density. So, this study intends to clarify whether or not this decreasing tendency would mean real decrease in the body density. Measurements were made on healhy 66 male students (l8〜25 yrs, average 19.9 yrs) on their height (156.0〜183.1 cm), weight (44.14〜78.85 kg) and body density, which was determined by underwater weighing method (1.0481〜1.0895 g/cc). It was found that Rohrer's index did not have high correlationship (r=-0.230p>0.05) with the body density, and the size of height had no significant relationship with the body density. Meanwhile, the allometry equation of height (X) and weight (Y) obtained for these subjects was found to be Y = 2.792×10^<-3>×X^<1.946> This may suggest that the decrease of Rohrer's index (Y/X^3) is due to overestimation of height. Thererore, It was concluded that the decrease of Rohrer's index would be caused by overestimation of height, which was demonstlated by the allometry equation obtained in this study, and does not necessarily mean the decrease in the body density.
