The purposes of this study were to clarify the definition and concept of service radius and to investigate the service radius of playfield. The former was clarified by using available literatures, and the latter was studied by a survey to the users, the semi-users, and the non-users in seven areas where residents would mainly play informal physical activities and some skills of organized sports. As the result of this study, the following conclusions were obtained: (1)A playfield is a type of neighborhood areas and facilities, which are set up with nonspecific purposes and standards, and is designed for informal physical activities and some skills of organized sports mainly. The size requires no less than 6,000 square meters. (2)Service radius is a reasonable radius of the range where a physical education service is provided for residents. Though service radius is divided into three kinds, i. e. service radius in Club Service, in Program Service, and in Area Service, it may be treated most significantly in Area Service, especially in neighborhood areas and facilities. (3)The service radius of playfield is 800〜1,300 meters, and from the point of view of the time required to come to the facility, a desirable service radius is limited from 10 to 15 minutes at most.
