To examine the role of natural conditioning mechanism in the attacks of bronchial asthma, some clinical and laboratory examinations were carried out. The results obtained were as follows ; l. In a series of 85 asthmatic patients, the occurrence of natural conditioning mechanism in the precipitation of attacks was demonstrated in 72.3%. The patients' group which showed the appearance of high degree of natural conditioning was characterized by (1) higher percentage of females (71.4%), (2) Ionger duration of disease state (average 11.8 years), (3) higher percentage of perenial type (51.0%) and (4) higher percentage of severe cases (45.7%).2. The aggravation or improvement of respiratory function could be conditioned in the patients of bronchial asthma by using acetylcholine or adrenalin as an unconditioned stimulus. 3. The conditioned reflex asthma could be elaborated in guinea pigs by using histamin inhalation as an unconditioned stimulus. The significant increase of noradrenaline as the effect of conditioned stimulus was demonstrated in the organs of the guinea pigs in which respiratory conditioning was elaborated., This result shows that the respiratory conditioning was accompanied by simultaneous acute activation of sympathetic-adrenomedullary system, as the result of conditioned emotional reaction of anxiety or fear. 4. In view of the significant role played by the natural conditioning mechanism in the clinical course of bronchial asthma, a new therapeutic approach of behavior therapy would become an important tool in the treatment of asthmatic patients, especially in that of obstinate or chronic cases.

"Psychosomatic Disorder" (PSD) is the term designated to a disease condition in which certain original mechanisms have been modified by psychogenic or emotional stress. In case of asthma, the term PSD is applied when symptoms due to allergy and other mechanisms are modified by psychogenic or emotional stress. If one could understand the somatic differences between non-PSD asthma and PSD asthma, it would be possible to identify PSD upon physical observation of patients and there by contribute to the development of psychosomatic medicine. In possibly psychogenic as well as non-psychogenic asthmatic patients, we examined their BP, increment of heart rate by standing position, microvibration (MV), effect of drugs, acount of eosinophile and basophile levels of serum histamine, plasma PG, serum lgE, and blood serotonin. As the result, PSD asthma, Iower BP, Iower increment of HR higher frequency of MVFtype, shorter effect of triamcinolon acetonide and higher level of serotonine were found.

Bronchial asthma is a functional disease, combining the psychological, physical (lung function, autonomic nervous function etc…) and allergic factors. During the infancy especially from birth to 3 years old functional characteristics of bronchial asthma are gradually formed in the brain (neocortex. Limbic cortex) by negative parental care. The physical homeostasis, being controlled by the vegulation of the nervous system and body fluid system, also goes through the special situation, in which the infant may suffer from bronchial asthma easily, and consequently the psychosomatic condition of bronchial asthma may be completely formed. According to this process, 90% of prospective asthmatic children do suffer from bronchial asthma by the age of 6. The severity of bronchial asthma becomes proportional to the extent of negative parental care and the wrong guidance of doctors. The factors inducing asthmatic attacks are mutiple because broncial asthma is the disease of synthetic nature. We have analyzed the causes of bronchial asthma and have designed the methods for the radical therapy applicable to whole causes of bronchial asthma, which we named "the synthetic radical therapy". This therapy proved to be especially effective to bronchial asthma in adults, taking effect in 70-90% of them after one month.

Purpose The present study was conducted to make a continuous study of the influence of air pollution upon asthma-like diseases. It has been said, on the basis of air-pollution reports, that the incidence of asthma-like diseases was higher and the rate of positive reactions to house dust and that of lgE were lower in air-contaminated the air-contaminated areas than in the non-contaminated areas. In this connection, we have been conducting a statistical study of industrial workers and all the grade school children and junior high school students in Kita-Kyushu City for the past 5 years. According to our survey, the above-mentioned condition had been true until 1969 ; however, the incidence and other findings have undergone some changes these five years, during the concentration of contamination has been reduced by half. Method 1) The total of 7,856 people from 108 main industries in Kita-Kyushu city were involved, of whom 400 suspects were examined by interviews and other physical examinations. 2) A11 the grade school children and junior high school students (total of 108 schools) were given physical examinations and the suspects various allergic tests. 3) The contamination was classified according to the area map provided by the Anti-poliution Bureau of Kita-Kyushu City. 4) Asthma-like diseases were classified according to the diagnostic standard designed by the Departments of Internal Medicine, Pediatrics and Hygiene of the Kyushu University Hospital. Results l) With regard to industrial workers, the incidence was higher in highly contaminated areas and this trend showed a gradual decrease as the ages of subjects increased. 2) The rate of positive reactions to house dust and that of lgE were lower in the contaminated areas. 3) With regard to children and and students, the incidence was higher. The age at the onset of the disease seemed to be rather high, but it was not so clear in many of them. 4) Fall dust was reduced by 47% and SOx by 56% during the 5 year period. 5) Typical asthma increased by 1.96%, house dust by 65.5% and lgE also showed a high rate in the contaminated areas during the past 5 years. 6) With regard to psychogenic factors, we examined children's disciplin and personality which were viewed by parents as well as personality evaluated by their school teachers. Many of them showed introversive, hypochondriacal tendencies or had unusual experiences such as separation anxiety. Many children complained of fear and anxiety about contnaminated materials in the highly contaminated areas. Summary Despite the fact that the concentration of contamination was decreased by half and the incidence of atypical asthma decreased, the incidence of typical asthma and the rate of positive reactions to house dust, together with high levels of lgE, have been on the increase .

In considering the relationship between the occurrence of allergic diseases and the environment, much attention should be given to the patient's hypersensitivity to drugs. This is bectuse these diseases could occur in a medical environment, especially due to therapeutic drugs given. In addition, drug hypersensitivity has beecome an important problem these days as the drug therapy has greatly expanded. Although drug eruption is the most frequent result of drug hypersensitivity, a very reports have been published on the studies of drug eruption from a psychosomatic viewpoint. The present study deals with the results of a clinical investigation of drug eruption from a psychosomatic viewpoint. The following results were obtained : 1) The incidence of drug eruption was 101 out of 1578 cases in a medical outpatient clinic (6.4%). The incidence was two times higher in females than in males. There were a variety of causative drugs, including pyrazolone analgesics, antibiotics, non-steroidal antiinflammatory drugs and others. 2) The patients with drug eruption showed a high rate of neurotic tendency which was estimated by the Cornell Medical Index as well as of allergic factors which were examined by both the candida skin test and serum lgE Ievels. The cases whose eruption was caused by only one drug were mainly of allergic origin. In contrast, the cases of drug eruption due to two or more drugs showed a tendency to have both neurotic and allergic factors. 3) Drug eruptions weve tentatively classified into three types, designated as allergic, bsychosomatic and neurotic, according to the presence or absence of neurotic and allergic factors. In addition, psychosocial factors were analysed in the individual patients in relation to the pathophysiological mechanisms of drug eruption. The results are suggestive of the following psychosomatic mechanisms for drug eruption : Psychosocial factors (1) may affect the autonomic nervous reaction or the vasomotor reaction ' which lead to skin rash, (2) may cause an imbalance in the central nervous function which affects the neurohumoral mechanism of drug eruption, and (3) may influence the attitude of patients in taking medicine and may aggravate the drug eruption.

Twenty-nine patients with allergic rhinitis who showed positive reactions to the allergic skin test but negative to the intranasal provocative test were loaded with the mirror drawing test as a stress, and then received the intranasal provocative test again, as the result, 19 of them (65.5%) turned positive to the test. It was not clear whether this change was a specific or non-specific reaction but certainly it was an allergic reaction (specific) in some cases. These latter patients were more nervous, introverted, anxious and fense. Those patients whose mental factors were possibly inhibiting nasal allergic symptoms, or causing their recurrence and aggravation tended to show more positive changes after the stress test than those who had no such factors. The patients who turned positive presented a variety of vegetative symptoms such as dermographia, dizziness, stiff neck, fatigability, perspiration in the palm. There was a marked tendency for those patients who had mental, social or physical troubles to show positive reactions after the stress test. Therefore, in performing the intranasal provocative test, it is necessary to take into consideration the fact that the result of this test varies with the mental status of patient.

We have conducted a psychosomatic study in 18 cases of stress erythrocytosis. The results were summarized as follows. The IV type, which is the psychosomatic type according to Abe's evaluation, was seen in 61.1% Of the subjects when examined by Cornell Medical Index. Using Yatabe-Guilford's personality test, black list & eccentric types were observed in 61.l %. The mean profile showed the AE type indicating depressive, egocentric & nondirective tendencies. 61.1% Of the subjects scored high points in Manifest Anxiety Scale. Also, 66.6% belonged to the high score group in Self-Rating Questionnaire for Depression. The precipitating factors were analyzed in each case. As a result, 15 out of 18 cases were found to be under undue emotional stress and strain. The author emphasized that the emotional upset as well as personality played an important role to cause stress erythrocytosis.
