Introduction: With the spread of Visual Display Terminals (VDT) in work place, the influence of VDT work on mental health has been studied. In the previous studies, VDT skill was shown to have positive or negative effects on mental health. Job satisfaction, on the other hand, has been shown to decrease the stress reaction in the office, however not many studies have considered its relationship to mental health during VDT work. Hence this study attempt to clarify the relationship between VDT skill and job satisfaction related to co-workers (job satisfaction) on mental health when using VDT in the office Methods: VDT work stressor scale, VDT skill, job satisfaction related to co-workers and GHQ-28 were administrated to 203 workers (162 men, 39 women and sex unknown 2 with mean age±SD of 36.10±10.12) in Japan. VDT work stressor scale consisted of 15 items, including 3 sub scales of stress ('exchange of E-mail', 'troubles using VDT' and 'quantity of mail'). VDT skill was consisted of 11 items. Job satisfaction related to co-workers had 3 items. The original GHQ-28 was a self-report scale that consisted of 28 items measuring mental health, but in this study 21 items were selected. Result: Two-way analysis of variance with no repeated measures suggested that the relationship between job satisfaction and mental health was significant.; Anxiety and sleeplessness of in the high job satisfaction group were better than those of the lower job satisfaction group when 'exchange of E-mail', 'quantity of E-mail' and 'troubles using VDT' were stressors.; Depression in the high job satisfaction group was lower than that of the lower job satisfaction group when 'exchange of E-mail' was a stressor. On the other hand, the effect of VDT skill was not found. In addition, since no interaction was found as a result of the analysis of variance, it can be suggested that high job satisfaction is related directly to low stress reaction irrespective of the amount of stressors. Conclusion: The results of this study suggested that mental health during VDT work can be affected by the level of job satisfaction related to co-workers. On the other hand, no such relationship was found for VDT skill. From these results it may be suggested that creating relationship with co-workers is important as a stress management even when using VDT.

It is widely recognized that touching animals has a good effect on people. Newspaper or magazine articles report that touching animals produces a good effect especially on children, handicapped persons and old men, reduces uneasiness and stress, stabilizes a mental condition and powers the spontaneous cure. In the present study, we tried to analyze the psychological effect of the animal assisted activities on the children and the students with school maladjustment. As a result, in more than 3 sessions of animal assisted activities, scores of POMS (Tention-Anxiety, Vigor, Fatigue, Confusion) and AN-EGOGRAM (NP, FC, AC) have significantly changed. POMS scores (Depression-Dejection, Anger-Hostility) decreased and AN-EGOGRAM scores (CP, A) increased; however, there was no significant difference. These findings show that more than 3 sessions of the animal assisted activities improve psychological conditions (Tention-Anxiety, Vigor, Fatigue, Confusion), and stabilize the ego-state.

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between social skills, coping and the trend of anorexia nervosa in Japanese female college students. Method: Fifty-five Japanese female college students completed the questionnaire regarding social skills, coping, and the Eating Attitudes Test (EAT-26). Results: Structured equation modeling revealed that low tendencies of anorexia nervosa were related to the high level of trouble shooting skills, communication skills, and venting of emotion coping. Furthermore, high tendencies of anorexia nervosa were related to the high level of positive refraining and avoidance coping. Conclusion : Trouble shooting skills, communication skills, and venting of emotion coping may help Japanese female college students to ameliorate their tendencies of anorexia nervosa.

In recent years, narrative based medicine (NBM) has become widely recognized as a necessary complement to evidence based medicine (EBM). However, narratives in medical practice not only complement EBM, but are also of therapeutic significance. In consideration of the therapeutic function of narratives, the present report describes a 54-year-old married woman with a somatoform disorder who developed three narratives during the course of her treatment. She complained of long-term dysesthesia in her face and was hospitalized in our psychiatric ward after many unsuccessful somatic treatments. During her second psychiatric hospitalization, she began to talk about familial conflicts that she had not discussed previously. Subsequently, her facial preoccupation improved and she began to feel better. For this patient, the following three narratives were identified: (1) narrative of a somatic patient, (2) narrative of a depressive patient, and (3) narrative about problems in her life that were uncovered during the development of her treatment. The present report discussed the relationship between the change in the dominant narrative and the improvement of her condition.
