    The purpose of this study was to analyze the masseter EMG activity pattern affected by alteration of tooth-tapping frequency and biting force. Ten subjects were asked to do tapping synchronized with a auditory signal at 0.5, 1, 2, 3 or 5 Hz. They were also required to do tapping with three different biting force. The EMG was analyzed on silent period (SP), burst before SP (B1) and burst after SP (B2). The results was summarized as follows:
    1. The duration of B1 was not affected by change of tapping frequency and biting force, and it was always constant.
    2. The durations of B2 and SP were strongly affected by change of tapping frequency, and they were decreased with an increase of tapping frequency.
    3. The amplitudes of B1 and B2 were strongly affected by change of biting force, and they were increased with an increase of biting force.
    These results showed that each component of masseter EMG was selectively affected by the tapping frequency and/or biting force.

    This article presents a case of hyperplasia of the condyle and the ramus of the mandible in the right side with the asymmetrical face, occlusal instability and mild melancholia.
    In this case, the main aim of the treatment is to eliminate etiologic factors which may lead to psychosomatic disorders and TMJ dysfunction. Increased length of the mandible causing a deviation of the chin to the left side leads to loss of right molar support. This is thought as a principal cause of those disorders.
    Firstly, fixed bridge of right lower second premolar to second molar cemented over a 12-year period was removed, and temporary acrylic res in bridge for the same region was cemented to create a bilaterally stable occlusion.
    A few weeks later, the patient's complaints about physical and mental disorders have almost eliminated. And then his physical, psychical and social functions have been improved by the following orthodontic, conservative and prosthetic treatments.
    In this article, the process of these treatments is descrived.

    The masticatory muscle function has been examined by using the electromyography technique as the electrical activity and the occlusal force measurement as the mechanical activity.
    However, Berry D. C. and Yemm R. used the thermography method to measure the rise of skin temperature during the unilateral gum chewing. Tanaka M. et al. used the deep thermometer (TERUMO-JAPAN Co.) to measure the rise of deep temperature during the masticatory exercise.
    Six males (from 26 to 32 years) were selected as normal subjects. The skin and deep temperatures of masseter muscle were recorded during unilateral gum chewing for 5 minutes, clenching for 5 minutes, and sleep.
    The following results were obtained,
    1) When unilateral gum chewing and clenching, the deep temperature of forehead remained unchangeable, but the deep temperature of masseter muscle must be rose. Whereas the skin temperature of masseter muscle must not be rose.
    2) During sleep, the skin temperature of masseter muscle which changed by the room temperature or by the vascular response of body shell were characterized as the peripheral body temperature.
    3) From the above results, the deep temperature was more exactly than the skin temperature as an indication of the masseter muscular activity.

    Adhesion Bridges (acid-etched retainers) have many advantages comparing with conventional fixed prosthodontic treatments. Although they have been applied in many clinical cases, the rational guidance for the design of metal framework has not been studied in terms of resistance for pealing loads.
    In our study, the effect of thickness and shape of metal frameworks were evaluated by comparing pealing strength (maximum loads under pealing test) using Co-Cr alloy frameworks and acrylic resin block for the substitute for the human teeth. In the results, thicker metal framework showed greater pealing resistance and the proximal extension could be the help for increasing pealing strength.

    This investigation was carried out to determined what the average man in the street considered to be a natural row of teeth. Models of artificial teeth were made in which the arrangement of anterior teeth was varied, and then shown to a group of dentists and a group of nonprofessionals. Each group was asked to state at what point they felt the teeth looked unnatural and the asymmetry of the teeth. The former was dubbed the point of perceptibility, the latter, the point of discrimination. The points for both groups were compared to determine if differences existed.
    The results were as follows:
    1. Only slight changes gave the nonprofessional group a feeling of unnaturalness while this feeling in the group of dentists required a somewhat lager alteration.
    2. In the case of central incisors, the point of perceptibility for both groups was the same. However, in the case of lateral incisors and cuspids, the point of perceptibility for the group of dentists was significantly higher than that of the nonprofessionals.
    3. The degree of change which nonprofessionals considered affected the asymmetry of the teeth was from 1.5 to 2.5 times that of the dentists. It was clear that for any tooth and any change, the point of discrimination for the nonprofessionals was higher.

    A search of the literature revealed very scant information on the fit of the Cerestore crown recently introduced. A stainless steel master model with full shoulder was fabricated and studies were carried out on the model. The fit of the Cerestore crowns and the porcelain-fusedto-metal crowns was compared with respect of each stage of fabrication and the cementing stage. The fit of the Cerestore crowns was evaluated by comparing the maximum marginal openings of the two types of crowns.
    The maximum marginal opening of the Cerestore crowns was 11 μm in the core firing stage, 15 μm in the veneering stage, 19 μm in the glazing stage, and 34 μm in the cementing stage, which were one fourth of that of the porcelain-fused-to metal crowns. Cerestore crowns showed excellent fit as compared with the porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns. Cross-sections of all the specimens were also examined and they revealed better fit in the case of the Cerestore crowns.

    Adhesive strengths and physical properties of two different new autopolymerized resins have been studied for the prosthetic clinical application. New resins are divided into two types, MB-3 for denture repair resin and MB-4 used for relining of metal based denture. MB-3 and MB-4 are composed of three components, a bonding liner, a liquid and a powder. The bonding liner contains 7wt% 4-META in MMA-solvent. Liquid and powder consist of MMA and Poly-MMA the same as conventional cold-curing resins. Adhesive strength of MB-3 to the Co-Cr alloy was 155±15 kg/cm2 after 90 days immersion in 37°C water, and 106±20 kg/cm2 after 3, 000 thermal cycles. Setting time of MB-3 was 4′30′, slightly slow as compared with Unifast, but other physical properties, brinell hardness, water sorption and color stability were almost the same as the contrast. MB-4 showed physical properties approximately similar to those of Rebaron. MB-3 indicated no acute toxity and no deposit from the boiling water solution of bowl milled specimen. It was concluded from the results that two different new resins were acceptable in a clinical application.

    Porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns, though having a better aesthetic appearance, are admittedly inferior in fitness, as compared with full cast crowns. As compression stress is applied to porcelain after firing, porcelain is prepared with a slightly lower thermal expansion coefficient than is metal. This contributes to an increased strength of porcelain, but disturbs the fit due to tension stress, under conditions of an inadequate thickness of the metal.
    The X-ray stress measurement method is the only known means of a non-destructive measurement, and this method is used to assess the residual stresses of various metals.
    X-ray diffraction examinations were made to evaluate the possibility of X-ray stress measurement of precious metals.
    Precious metal strips 6mm widetimes;18mm long were then prepared to determine the change in the stress value during the porcelain firing process. The high compression stress after both the specimens had been polished was reduced by degassing.
    X-ray stress measurements of precious metals were successfully obtained.

    We have previously made improvements relating to a denture base lined with soft fluorine resin. This lining material (Kurepeet, Kureha Co.) had qualities of extremely small absorptivity in water, an excellent adhesiveness to the denture base, and long stability in use. This material, however, was not simple in way of use in comparison with the ordinary commercial materials and also had some problems in flexibility.
    For solving this defect, we have proposed a method, in which soft fluorine resin is mixed and kneaded well with a fluorine-containg oligomer. The new material simplifys the lining method, because it has a fluidity in the stage of flasking. Also, at the stage where the lining work has been completed, this material will have an ideal hardness with an elasticity.

    Articulator movement and mandibular movement are usually regarded as rigid body movement. When we observe the three-dimensional movement of an articulator to which some targets are fixed, we obtain the co-ordinate (X, Y, Z) of each target in the rectangular coordinate system on a measuring apparatus. As accidental error is contained in each value, any distance between targets, which should be constant, is slightly changed on the observational occasion. Namely, the rigid body condition is not satisfied. The method of least squares is useful to correct accidental errors and give us desirable result of observation as the most provable value.
    In this article, we investigate to correct accidental errors by means of the indirect observation of the method of least squares. When we correct accidental errors by using this method, we get the position (Xo, Yo, Zo) of the point, which is the translational and rotational center of the articulator, and three rotational angles (Ε, Φ, Ψ) as the most probable value. Using these values, we are able to analyze the movement of any point on the articulator: We can obtain the translation and rotation of teeth on the articulator.

    This study has been performed to observe macroscopic, histological and histochemical changes in the decubital ulcer that was formed experimentally by the 5mm length and 1mm diameter wire cemented on the buccal surface of upper first molar.
    The tissue destruction was progressed from the surface of the decubital ulcer by mechanical stimuli, and the tissue restoration advansed from the circumference of the ulcer. At the bottom of the decubital ulcer the tissue destruction and restoration was repeated mutually. The location and molecular kinds of glycosaminoglycans also changed with these changes.

    The author conducted asimultaneous recordtaking of the phasic masticatory movement and electric discharge activity of masticatory muscles of patients with comparatively slight ternporomandibular arthrosis by abnormalities of occlusion, using the Saphon visitrainer which is an analytical equipment for the jaw movement and the polygraph (RM-6000). As a result of this study, the auther arrived at the following conclusion.
    1. The maximum component of horizontal direction on the affected side was evidently larger than the unaffected side at the whole masticatory period.
    2. The maximum component of vertical direction was decreased with the masticatory progress.
    3. Between the affected and the unaffected sides, the masticatory movement area in frontal plane was larger on the affected side at the whole masticatory period, and it decreased with the masticatory progress, while on the unaffeced side the area remained about the same.
    4. Between the affected and the unaffected sides, the horizontal mandibular position of maximum muscle activity was larger on the affected side.
    5. The vertical mandibular position of maximum muscle activity was the largest in the early period and it decreased with the masticatory progress. Among the masticatory muscles, those on the unaffected side showed the largest value, while others remained about the same.

    Recently a new type dental porcelain furnace built in infra-red rays heating elements named “Technomat” was developed. It has many advantages because porcelain fusing begins from metal-ceramics interface not from the outer surface of porcelain. The purpose of this study is to compare the bond strength, surface roughness and edge form of porcelain between conventional type furnace and “Technomat”.
    And we obtained the following results.
    1. Push shear bond strength of Ni-Cr alloy named “Uni-metal” by using “Technomat” were 70% greater than that of conventional type. But by Pd alloy “Aurora” and Au alloy “Uni -gold” bond strength showed no significant difference.
    2. By measuring surface roughness and edge form of porcelain, “Technomat” showed underglazing tendency than the conventional type at the same firing temperature.
    3. Xray element analyses showed no significant difference between two furnaces. Additional tests must be made by using other Ni-Cr alloys.

    In construction of the full denture, it is important for the improvement of masticatory function and prevention of injury to the soft tissue to explicate the relationship between the impression methods and contour variations of the master cast.
    In this study, the impression pressure is devided between the seating speed and holding pres. sure of the impession tray, and the three dimensions repositioner and simulation model as the edentulous alveolar ridge are used for impression in the denture construction. It is investigated with three dimensional measurement of the master cast and pressure distribution in the impression tray measured by the diaphragm pressure sensor that the seating speed and holding pressure are influenced on the reproductivity of simulation model.
    As the result of this investigation, it is revealed that the seating speed and holding pressure of impression tray influence contour variations of the master cast irrespective of displaceability of impression objective. But when the soft tissue as impression objective has large displaceability, it is necessary to consider the form and location of the stopper and holding pressure of impression tray, because of deformation of stopper area according to holding pressure.

    Heat-curing resin is mainly used as denture base materials. But, recently, visible light curing resin and its curing unit have been developed by Dentsply Co. to be on the market.
    According to this method, resin in the dough form directly put on the stone cast, is irradiated with visible light for a short time, while being formed to be polymerized. By applying this method, troublesome management process which is required in the conventional heat-curing method can be omitted. Furthermore, the polymerization time can be shortened.
    Then, the authors, in the present study, purposing to make use this visible light curing denture base resin of clinical application, examined its mechanical properties.
    It proved that visible light curing resin, compared with heat-curing resin, was small in transverse deflection, transverse strength, tensile strength and water sorption, large in Rockwell hardness and nearly equall in Els. modulus and solubility.

    The deficiency of the rigidity of the retainer causes the falling of the acid-etched fixed partial denture from the abutment teeth. It was reported in the previous paper that the adhesive strength of the bridge increased as the thickness of the retainer increasing and reached the plateau. Suitable thickness of the retainer, however, may be difficult to obtain due to the occlusal relation.
    The purpose of this study is to look for the proper shape of the retainer.
    The following conclusions were obtained.
    1) Using cobalt-cromium alloy, the adhesive strength in the retainer of 1.0mm thickness was better than that of 0.5 mm on the same shape.
    2) The extension of proximal wing portions and adding ledge-form were effective to gain higher adhesive strength in using cobalt-cromium alloy and Au-Ag-Pd alloy.

    Less skilled students in the tooth carving were divided into two groups with 20 each. One group received a supplemental course with lecture and laboratory exercise and the other served as a control.
    After 3 months and 1 year and 8 months, the lasting effect of the course was evaluated. The results were as follows:
    1) After 3 months, the difference between the experimental and control groups was statistically significant at P<0.05.
    2) After 1 year and 8 months, there were no significant differences between both groups.
    3) No differences existed in both groups between caving products after 3 months and 1 year and 8 months.

    The author studied the affection of the physical properties of a setting time (initial and final setting time), a consistency, a dimensional change and a detail reprodusibility in the zinc oxide-eugenol impression materials added with each amount of an additional agent. The additional agents were the purified water, ethanol for disinfection, white petrolatum and glycerin.
    As the results of this study, the author reached the following conclusions.
    The purified water and ethanol for disinfection as an additional agent were suggested to be proper one in clinic, for the reason of its regular shortening, a stability of dimention and a evaluation for a detail reprodusibility. But the additional agent to adjust a consistency could not be found.
