    As a problem after cementation of porcelain fused to metal crown, discolorationof the gingiva is pointed out. On the other hand, a recommendation is made recently that thelabial margin form is prepared in the beveled shoulder type to improve the fitness of a fixedprosthesis. However, there is the possibility that the topical metal portion at the unattachedgingiva margin is exposed and appears to be darkened as a result of the beveling, suggestingthat this is a cause for the discoloration. In this regard, gold-plating to be applied to the metalin the beveled portion is conventionally found to be effective to remedy this condition.
    In this study, two types of crown whose metal portion was golden-colored or otherwisewere prepared, and the unattached gingiva with the crown trially attached was photographedwith a fundus camera. And the color produced on the reversal films were measured with thespectrophotometer, and as a result, the following conclusions were obtained by using thegingiva before preparation as control. That is, it can be said that Gingigold employed thistime is effective as a chromatic measure, provided that teeth for indication is selected.

    Previous studies have sought to establish the significance of various parameters inheight of vertical dimension and on palatal plates. The investigation was conducted on 16 adultmen as subjects who wore occlusal splints and plates. Analysis of utterance patterns were revealedon Sound Spectrogram and Vowel-Consonant-Vowel (VCV) Japanese words were segmented andquantified. A series of experiments was determind:(1) In case where [i] and [u]were produced High Vertical Dimension, the Vowel Formant Frequencies were significantly influenced.(2) In caseof Japanese five vowels which belong to consonant environments, figures of Formant Frequencywere similar in F 1-F 2 cordinates.(3) Time Duration of consonants were somewhat longer, especiallythe part of Implotion fluctuated widely. Interaction of splint and plate was significantlyremarkable in [i] after or before [k], and the less conspicuous interaction [u] was in environmentof [p] and [k].

    The concept of anterior teeth coloring system from which modern clinicians suffer isintimately bound up with their figural space, such as from, structure, arrangement and inclination. These sensory message furthermore has an interdependent relation to the other messages fromcoloring space, such as hue, chroma and value. Dental Color Analyzer (DCA) offers the posibilityof far greater impact for the clinician to solve this problems. Raw data of DCA, however, stillcontained some kinds of biased scale. Maltiple-Regression shows an optimal prediction to theseinterdependent variables, and so many significant conclusions. The auther obtained the followingresults; 1) Anterior teeth color is able to analyze into Multivariate Regression because of theirinterdependent structure. 2) Men's x-values were greater than women's in sample means. i. e. Men's color is somewhat reddish. 3) In case of one tooth defect, x-value have greater informationthan y-value. 4) The optimal prediction is obtained by the rest teeth as many as possible.

    The investigation was carried out to clarify the gingival discoloration caused bya silver alloy metal core. Experiments were performed on the following four different clinicaltypes of metal core restorations: Type 1, post crown type, ready-prepared; Type II, shoulderedjacket crown preparation, ready-prepared; Type III, shouldered jacket crown preparation, preparedfrom Type I with gum protection ; Type IV, shouldered jacket crown preparation, preparedfrom Type I with inflicting a wound on gingival epithelium. Three months after setting themetal cores, 24 teeth in 3 adult dogs with pinkish gingivae were examined macroscopically, histopathologically and transparent electron microscopically. Depositions, which were foundon the gingival tissue of Type IV, were given electron-probe microanalysis for detecting elements.
    Macroscopically, gingival discoloration was found on the gingiva of Type IV only. Lightmicroscopically, many black or dark-brown depositions were observed in the lamina propria ofthe gingival tissue of Type IV. Electron-microscopically, these depositions were seen to consistof a fragmentary dense central core of silver alloy surrounded by a halo of lower electron densitymaterial consisting of fine particles and filaments. Large numbers of smaller particles wereseen within histiocyte-like cells. Very fine particles were also observed along the basal laminaof gingival epithelium. Components of the depositions and fine particles were elementallyanalyzed by an electron-probe microanalyser: Silver and sulphur were detected.

    TMJ noise is a sign of TMJ dysfunction. This study observed the changes of TMJnoise using a stabillization splint.
    21 subjects having only TMJ noise, were measured for noise position and its value duringopening and closing of the mouth before fitting a stabilization splint and again two weeks later.
    Also 5 patients with TMJ dysfunction were measured by the same method.
    1. During opening, there were many TMJ noises in the last phase, but the value was largestin the first phase. During closing, there were many TMJ noises in middle phase but the valuewas the same in all phases.
    2. The stabilization splint decreased the frequency and value of TMJ noises.
    3. The decreased noises during the first and middle phases of opening moved more to thefirst phase, and the last phase noise disappeared two weeks after fitting.
    4. Increased noises occured in the last opening phase two weeks after fitting.
    5. There was no one tendency during closing after fitting.
    6. As a result, the noise position and movement of the noise position have a particular relationshipto the cause of the noise. This suggests a relationship between the thick part of the discand location of the condyle, and too much movement of the condyle.

    The purpose of this study is to analyse and investigate by the finite element & linearprogramming method dynamical affects on the retainer, abutment tooth, and supporting tissueswhen the retainer with esthetic and functional improvement was loaded by the prosthetic treatmentthat modifies the tooth crown axis by applying the dowel core to the maxillary protrudedanterior tooth and reversed cross bite.
    The finding obtained are as follows:
    1. The greater the load angle at 30°, 45°, and 60°, and also the nearer the load position tothe margo incisivus, the more increases the stresses at periodentium, on a border of post and toothand in the porcelain jacket crown.
    2. Improvement by labially inclining the tooth crown axis of the anterior tooth of reversedcross bite results in less stresses occurring at periodentium, on the border of post and tooth and inthe alveolar bone than improvement of the anterior protruded tooth by lingually inclining thetooth crown axis.
    3. The risk of fracture of the porcelain jacket crown of the retainer depends more on theposition of load rather than on the angular difference between the tooth crown axis and radixdentis.

    In order to obtain an optimum tooth guidance in a sence of harmonization withTMJ functions, I here analyzed the relationship between anterior guidance and condylar pathin lateral excursions.
    In this paper, I defined a parameter (Sagittal Rotation Angle) concerning rotation of thenon-working condyle in sagittal projection. Through numerical simulations and its measurementsin practical jaw movements, I could confirm a relationship between inclination of incisal pathand sagittal inclination of condylar path, which made this parameter to fall into a limittedrange.
    Since this parameter appeared valid in diagnosis and treatment of tooth guidance, I proposeda linear estimation method with good precision, using inclination of incisal path from thehorizontal plane and sagittal inclination of condylar path, and showed its estimation error to becaused mainly by vertical movements of the working condyle.

    The amount of forces exerted by the oral soft tissue which surrounds a denture had been measured by the three dimensional transducers. It is important to record the direction of the force as well as to measure the amount of force. In the past this has been believed to be a difficult task. However in this study both the directions and the amount of the force on the area of buccal and lingual surface of the first molar of the lower denture were recorded during prearranged movements which were selected from various oral functions.
    The five subjects selected for this study each had a mandible with a free end saddle.
    Findings were as follows;
    1. At the rest position of a mandible, the force exerted by the oral soft tissue was minimal.
    2. In the most of the movements tested, most frequently detected force direction upon the buccal surface was from disto-coronal.
    3. On the lingual surface the direction depended on the tongue movements during prearranged movements.

    The clinical effect of full coverage occlusal splint during 13 weeks insertion was investigated in 30 mandibular dysfunction patients with two or more symptoms of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain, TMJ sounds and limitation of mandibular movement followed by no organic change in the TMJ, who were reported in part 1 of this study.
    A remarkable effect of occlusal splint was obtained and 86.7% of the 30 patients were improved totally. Especially, the symptoms, TMJ pain and shoulder stiffness were much improved, but less effective was seen to buccal pain and temporal headache. The period of producing the effect of occlusal splint was different to each symptom, but no change was seen after 10 weeks in any symptoms.
    These results clearly show the effect of full coverage occlusal splint for mandibular dysfunction patients and useful suggestion of occlusal splint therapy to this disease was obtained.

    The planes which serve as references for cranium and face in dental clinicals at present include occlusal plane, Frankfort plane, Camper plane, and HIP plane. These referential planes are used for the purposes from examination and diagnosis to treatment, and the scope of their application is not merely limited to the relationship between tooth and dental arch but the planes serve asbases leading to establishment of the normal oro-facial system by grasping their positional relations to cranium and face.
    We report the results of our study made comparatively, according to the three-dimentional measurement system, on occlusal plane, Frankfort plane, Camper plane, HIP plane and their positional relationship to the referential points in clinicals by adopting the Japanese nationals with the natural dentition as subjects.

    Movements of soft tissues surrounding the oral cavity, especially lips and cheeks, have a great influence on the masticatory and the phonetic functions. These movements could indicate the state of harmony between a denture and the soft tissues and the muscles surrounding it.
    The purpose of this study was to investigate the movements of the facial surface during oral functions by applying 35mm nonmetric SLR camera as a three dimensional measurement system.
    Total of 101 subjects with normal range occlusion were selected. Forty-one selected points were placed on the skin surface of the face of each subject. The movements of these points under the condition of thrusting lips, pulling mouth corners backward, intentional occlusion and smile were measured in three dimensions.
    The findings were as follows;
    1. This three dimensional measurement system was applicable to study the movements of facial surface.
    2. The mouth corner points showed the greatest and the most characteristic movement among 41 points.
    3. The significant correlation was indicated between the movement of the mouth corner point and the movements of most of other points. This suggested that the mouth corner point could indicate the movements of the facial surface most significantly.

    The purpose of the following experiment is to examine the relation between changes of dental casting alloys in vivo and results of immersion tests. Five kinds of dental casting alloys were implanted into dorsal subcutaneous tissues of Wistar rats. The histological reactions of the local tissues surrounding implanted alloys were investigated after each period of 1, 3 and 6 months. Also, SEM-observation of surface changes, EPMA-analysis of chemical composition and weight measurement for 6-month period were performed. The results are as follows.
    1) Gold alloy and Ag-Pd-Cu-Au alloy showed slight tissue reactions and very few changes in weight, surface and composition.
    2) Tissue reactions of Ag-Sn-Zn alloy were as moderate as those of low-chromium Ni-Cr (86 Ni-10Cr) alloy. Though it showed a few weight changes, the obvious changes of surface and composition were similar to the result of 1% lactic acid.
    3) Low-chromium Ni-Cr (86 Ni-10 Cr) alloy showed slight loss in weight and few changes in surface and composition in vivo, that was similar to the result of Ringer's solution.
    4) High-chromium Ni-Cr (70 Ni-19 Cr) alloy showed severe tissue reactions as compared with those of other alloys. A little weight loss was observed only after 6 months. Changes in surface and composition were similar to the result of 0.05% HCl.

    The electrode potentials of soldered gold crwon bridges in the mouth were measured in a clinical situation using a pH-meter in conjunction with a platinum micro-probe and a saturated calomel elctrode. Eleven patients who participated in the study were restorated with four onesoldered bridges or nine two-soldered bridges which were prepared from commercial gold alloy and gold solder by conventional prosthetic procedures. During a period of three months after the insertion of bridges the electrode potentials of the bridges in the mouth were in the range of 0.03-0.19 V (SCE) for one-soldered bridges and 0.05-0.24 V (SCE) for two-solderes bridges. It indicated that the soldering under this experimental conditions had little influence on the electrode potentials of soldered gold crwon bridges in the mouth. The measurements of electrode potential in vitro showed that the potentials of the gold alloy and the gold solder in 0.1 N sodium chloride solutions were close to the potentials in the mouth. In acid solutions, however, the electrode potentials of the alloys were noble to those in neutral or alkaline solutions.

    In connection with edentulous prosthesis, it is significant to measure the thickness of the oral mucosa by a non-invasive technique in vivo. Ultrasonic waves of 15 MHz were used in an A-mode pulse reflection method. In order to check the suitability of the ultrasonic method, it was compared with the puncturing method on 10 sites of the maxillary mucosa in 6 dentated subjects.
    The results were as follows:
    1. The equipment has a small probe to measure the thickness of soft tissue in a limited oral cavity, and the axial resolution is 0.1 mm.
    2. The relationship between the mean values obtained by the ultrasonic and puncturing methods showed a high correlative coefficient of 0.94. Also, the standard error obtained from each subject by the ultrasonic method was smaller than that of the puncturing method.
    3. The difference in the thickness of the oral mucosa varied in individual cases, but compared with the same site of others, there was a regular tendency: the thinnest sites were in the center of the palate with a range of 1.3 to 1.6mm; the thickest sites were in the rear sides of the palate with a range of 5.5 to 5.9 rnm, the other sites were medium thickness.

    Monitoring dynamical occlusal tooth contacts have a lot of significance and potentialities for clinical application.
    The purpose of this project was to establish the method for monitoring dynamical occlusal contacts by tooth vibration with miniature accelerometers attached on tooth surface.
    In this study, the evaluation on the accelerometer fixation method on tooth surface were conducted. A miniature accelerometer (MA 3: Morita, Co.) were examined on the vibration table with several kinds of fixation method and received the vibration caused by the random noise. The coherence, gain and phase of each obtained data were analyzed on Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) and compared.
    As the result, the most suitable fixation method of the accelerometer determined by the manipulation in clinical situations and in above mentioned factors was the one in which the resin core with and accelerometer bonded by cyanoacrylate bonding agent was fixed on the tooth surface by two-sided adhesive tape.

    We developed the hard resin (Mitel OM) which showed superior mechanical properties, and reported its methodology and case suitability as part 1. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the wear resistance in the case of clinical use for occlusal surface. The wear resistance was investigated and compared with the commercially available resins and the porcelain by using a mechanical abrasion machine which simulated tooth grinding. The abrasion test was made on flat surfaces of resin specimens with palladium alloy rods.
    We conclude that the hard resin containing the composite filler showed superior wear resistance, on the other hand those containing PMMA pearls did less wear resistance. Porcelain and samples with glass filler, Dentacolor®, abraded rods very much and the data suggested wear loss of antagonists.

    Electrode potentials of non precious alloy crowns in the mouth were measured in a clinical situation using a pH-meter in conjunction with a platinum micro-probe and a saturated calomel electrode. Nine patients who participated in the study were restorated with crowns which were prepared from commercial dental alloys of Co-Cr, Ni-Zn-Cu and Ni-Cr. During a period of three months after the cementation of the crowns the electrode potentials of the crowns were in the range of -0.21 V (SCE) for Co-Cr crowns, -0.10--0.20 V (SCE) for Ni-Zn-Cu crowns and -0.13--0.21 V (SCE) for Ni-Cr crowns and were roughly the same for all non precious alloy crowns examined. The measurements of electrode potential in vitro showed that the potentials of the alloys in 0.1 N sodium chloride solutions were close to the potentials in the mouth. In acid solutions, however, the electrode potentials of the alloys were noble to those in neutral or alkaline solutions.
