    During function, every R.P.D. shows denture movement that is converted into stress to the abutments.
    Our two investigations revealed that guide surfaces on the retainers was effective in reducing the stress.
    In R.P.D. treatment, many different designs of clasp systems have been used with less consideration of this guiding function.
    In this study, four types of clasps, Aker's clasp, Krol R. P. D., Kratochvil R. P. D. and the Crown Ledge preparation, having different guide surfaces were examined to measure the mobility of abutments under the pull out force.
    Metal frame dentures were provided in order to measure these movement with electronic sensor.
    Each retainer had interchangeable feature tofasilitate the investigation.
    The following results were obtained,
    1. Aker's clasp showed small amplitude with high frequency during removal periods.
    2. Both R.P.I. clasps give only small vibration when the path of removal is adjusted. To get this direction is difficult.
    3. Guide surface of Crown Ledge clasp is effective in reducing the mobility of abutment tooth.
    4. The guiding surface therapy has an effect in reducing the abutment vibration.

    The purpose of this study is to measure the human breathes of denture weares by using breath sensor, and to evaluate the influence of denture cleansing.
    Thefollowing results were obtained.
    1. There is a possibility that the human breathes of full denture weares may originate from their dentures.
    2. There isa possibility that the cleansed dentures may cover the smell of the patient's oral mucosa itself and may reduce the apparent human breathes.
    Anyhow, the human breathes of denture weares reduce significantly by using the denture cleanser.

    Impression taking is essential step in prosthetic clinical work and a tray of anappropriate size and form must be selected to obtain accurate impressions. In taking impressions of edentulous jaws, in particular, the morphology of the alveolar ridge must be grasped precisely. Length and width of the alveolar crest therefore were measured and their correlation was examined.
    1. The coefficients of correlation of the maximal length of the alveolar crest with width between theposterior margins of the alveolar crest, with the width between the alveolar crest at the first molars, and with the width between alveolar crest at the canineswere r=0.20, 0.43, 0.38, respectively, for the upper jaws, and r=0.14, 0.01, 0.
    2, respectively, for the lower jaws. No significant correlation was found.
    2. Significant correlation was found between the posterior margins of the alveolar crest and the width between the alveolar crest at the first molars and thewidth between the alveolar crest at the canines (r=0.66, 0.70) for the upper jaws.
    3. Significant correlation was found between the posterior margins of thealveolar crest with the width between the alveolar crest at the first molars (r=0.76) for the lower jaws.

    The author noticed the relation between articulatory functions and the prosthesis. For the purpose of clarifying the influence of the insertion of denture on the duration of speech sound and the articulatory functions before pronunciation and on the self-comensation of these organs. The experimental palatal plates wereinserted on 13 subjects with natural dentition, assuming that they were insertedwith complete denture, and the duration of speech sound, muscular discharge of facial muscle and tongue pressure before pronunciation were evaluated longitudinaly with the pre-insertion of palatal plate as basis.
    As the result of this study, the following conclusions were obtained.
    The results of this study suggest that speech sound, lips and tongue being important organs as the articulators are placed under strong influence before pronunciation by insertion of the denture, whereas on the self-compensation of the articulators before pronunciationdiffered according to the point of articulation and the manner of articulation of each speech sound. Therefore, it was necessary to take care on the relation between the shape of palatal plate and the articulatory functions of lips and tongue in the clinical prosthodontics.

    As the first step of evaluating the kinematic function and the coordinative movement among articulatory organs, attention was focused on the palatal form in various factors related to the function of pronounciation on complete denture. After the experimental palatal plate was inserted into 13 natural dentitions in the age ranging from 21-24 years old, muscular discharge of intrinsic muscles, tongue movement and mandibular movement before pronounciation were recorded longitudinaly.
    These data were comparatively evaluated with those before insertion ofthe experimental palatal plate, and the following conclusion were obtained.
    It has been made clear in this study that from the change of muscular discharge of intrinsic muscles, tongue movement and mandibular movement before pronounciation between before and after the insertion of the experimental palatal plate, correction aspect of the kinematic function and the coordinative movement among articulatory organs varied with point and method of articulation on each sound. And these facts suggested that it was necessary to diagnose and treat under consideration of the relation between the palatal form and articulatory function of tongue and mandible in removable prosthodontic treatment.

    To study the mechanism of exertion of horizontal mandibular force, the myoelectric effect of mandibular isometric protrusive and lateral protrusive contraction under four forces (1/4, 2/4, 3/4 or 4/4 of the maximum voluntary contraction) at three different jaw positions (O: centric occlusion, half: middle position between O and max, and max: maximum eccentric protrusive or lateral protrusive mandibular positions) was measured in six male subjects with normal jaw function. Electromyographic recordings of the inferior part of the lateral pterygoid (LPt), posterior temporalis (Tp) and masseter (Mm) muscles were taken bilaterally, and forces were measured with force transducer.
    EMG activities in the bilateral LPt during isometric protrusive contraction and in the contralateral LPt during lateral protrusive contraction increased with load intensity. Mm bilaterally during protrusive contraction, ipsilateral Tp and contralateral Mm during lateral protrusive contraction played an auxiliary role in exertion of horizontal mandibular force.
    EMG activities in the contralateral LPt during lateral protrusive contraction with every force and in the bilateral LPt during protrusive contraction with 1/4, 2/4, 3/4 force, were significantly increased under the eccentric mandibular position. However, EMG activities in the bilateral LPt during protrusive contraction with 4/4 force did not increase under the eccentric mandibular position.
    EMG activity in the LPt during protrusive contraction were higher than that during lateral protrusive contraction at every mandibular position and with every force.
    It was concluded that the LPt was predominantly concerned with exertion of horizontal mandibular force.

    The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of three marginal shape of abutment teeth (Flat, Moderate and Steep) on the fitness of castable glass ceramics (DICOR) crown clinically.
    The following results were obtained:
    1. The change of width of three marginal shapes showed the same tendency on eachfiring procedure.
    2. The vertical change of three marginal shapes showed themost constant on Flat and decreased on Steep.
    3. On the marginal edge, the Labiopalatal gaps were larger than Mesiodistal gaps. 4. On Labiopalatal section, the gaps of Steep were larger than those of Flat and Moderate especially as cast.
    5. The gaps Flat were almost same on Labial, Palatal, Mesial and Distal parts.

    Resin veneered crowns show several drawbacks which affect the veneering resin: peeling, fracture, falling and also discoloration by leakages from the metal-resin border.
    The purpose of the present study is to find out a principle of resin veneered crown design allowing the solution of the above-mentioned problems.
    As a preliminary step, the influence of luting cements on the relative rigidity of veneered crowns and metal frameworks was examined by measuring the strain to static and impact charges on several portions of crowns.
    The investigation led to the following results:
    1. The magnitude of the strain to a static charge increased with the number of shocks but beyond 100 shocks, no variation could be observed.
    2. The magnitude of the strain to a static charge was proportional to the waight of the charge.
    3. The strain of crowns and metal frameworks set with PanaviaEX had a magnitude smaller than the strain of those set with Fitchecker.
    4. The strain to an impact charge had a magnitude 1-4 times larger than the strain to a static charge.
    5. The adhesive resin luting agent reinforcement effect could be clearly confirmed.

    This paper presents three cases in which CSC telescope dentures were inserted following occlusion raising.
    Post-operative course remained uneventful in all three cases. Follow-up observations suggested that the use of CSC telescope denture, is helpful in prosthetic treatment which includes occlusion raising.
    In Case 1, occlusion was raised to a level above the free-way space. However, a new free-way space appeared after occlusion raising and it existed for a long time. A free-way space, which conformed to a space calculated from the free-way space before occlusion raising and the amount of occlusion raising, appeared in Case 2. In Case 3, however, the free-way space after occlusion raising was narrower compared to a space calculated from free-way space before occlusion raising and amount of occlusion raising.

    Wear characteristics of hybrid denture teeth, plastic denture teeth which were partially reinforced with metal, was evaluated. The plane specimens were made up with resin and metal. Light curing veneering resin, New metacolor, heat curing veneering resin, Mitel-OM and PMMA (Poly methyl methacrylate) were used for resin parts, while gallium containing filling alloy, silver alloy, palladium alloy and titanium containing chromium cobalt alloy were used for metal parts. The specimens were abraded by the rod specimens of palladium alloy with abrasion test machine. The wear depth and width were measured at 1, 5, 10 and 20×104 times of abrasion which stroke was 10 mm each.
    The specimens of heat cured veneering resin reinforced with chromium cobalt alloy showed the least wear loss while the specimens of PMMA reinforced with silver alloy did the most. The difference of wear ratio between light cured and heat cured veneering resin was not statistically significant.

    For the purpose of clarifying the effect of alloy compositions on cracking in laser welds of dental Ni-Cr alloys, 12 commercial and 11 experimental Ni-Cr alloys for crown and bridges were subjected to pulsed YAG laser spot welding, and their welds were investigated by optical and scanning electron microscopy, and EDX and thermal analysis methods. Main conclusions are as follows.
    1. Cracks in laser welds were solidification cracks at grain boundaries in weld fusion zones.
    2. In the case of commercial dental Ni-Cr alloys, a considerable number of eutectics enriched in Si, Al and/or S were formed. Greater cracking susceptibility was interpreted by considering that these eutectics solidified at solidification temperatures far lower than the nominal solidus.
    3. In the case of experimental Ni-Cr alloys with a small amount of eutectics, S and Si enhanced cracking sensitivity, but Mn reduced cracking.
    4. The above results suggest that it is beneficial to the prevention or reduction of cracking to decrease harmful elements such as Si and S forming low solidification temperature eutectics or to add some elements such as Mn forming higher solidification temperature eutectics instead of lower ones.

    The purpose of this study is to investigate the fundamental property of the superior head of the lateral pterygoid muscle (LPT) of the human beings. The experiments were performed on 6 subjects. Electromyographic activity of the superior head of LPT were simultaneously recorded with masseter, temporal and digastric muscle.
    The findings may be summerized as follows:
    1. Superior head of LPT showed the maximum activity during closing and clenching.
    2. Superior head of LPT showed remarkable tonic activity at rest position and notable activity during swallowing and passive retrusion.
    3. Superior head of LPT activity was related to vertical dimension and bite force quantatively, but such relationship was quite different from masseter and temporal muscle.
    4. Jaw-jerk reflex was evoked by mechanical chin tap in the superior head of LPT, masseter and temporal muscle showing identical time course.
    5. Periodontal excitatory reflex was evoked by mechanical tooth stimulation in the superior head of LPT and temporal muscle.
    From these findings it was concluded that superior head of LPT was qualitatively similar to but quantitatibly distinct from jaw closing muscles such as masseter and temporal muscle.

    This study investigated the functional roles of the inferior of the lateral pterygoid muscle (LPt) and the anterior belly of the digastric muscle (Da) during jaw-opening, in which EMG activity was simultaneously recorded at the condylar and incisor points. The LPt was found to slide the condyle along the articular tubercles and the Da was moved the incisor region downward-backward for condylar rotation. Therefore, rotation of the condyle and sliding of the mandible downward-forward apparently combined in a coordinated movement. Direct relationships were found between LPt activity and the distance of condylar movement, and between Da activity and the velocity of incisor movement during opening of the mandible. Therefore, the muscles primarily engaged in wide opening movement were mainly the LPt, and for rapid opening, mainly the Da.

    As more dentists diagnose and treat the patient with temporomandibular disorders, muscle palpation has been recognized as a valuable diagnostic method. But this method was depended on sensibility and experience of the operator.
    The purpose of this study was to establish the quantification of muscle palpation by new pressure pain threshold apparatus.
    Pressure pain threshold (PPT) was determined by the subject when a ramp force applied to the skin changed from “pressure” to “pain”.
    The subjects for the experiments were 90 normal males, 100 normal females and one patient with temporomandibular disorders.
    Total of 12 sites, anterior temporal M., posterior temporal M., superficial portion of masseter M. and deep portion of masseter M., were measured.
    The results obtained were as follows:
    1. The females showed lower PPT than the males.
    2. No difference of PPT between right and left sides was recognized in normal subject, but the significant difference in the patient.
    3. PPT of the normal subjects were significantly higher in the posterior temporal M. than the other sites and lower in the superficial portion of masseter M. than the other sites.

    The purpose of this study was to investigate the applicability of fluoro-composite resins for clinical usage.
    Polychlorotrifluoroethylene (PCTFE) resin was applied to the tissue surface of pontic for 7 days in the oral cavity, and the amount of plaque accumulation was measured. The plaque retaining capacity of PCTFE was compared with Au-Ag-Pd alloy and porcelain.
    In order to survey the endurance of PCTFE-resin, the surface of PCTFE-coating was observed under SEM.
    The results were as follows:
    1. Plaque accumulation on the PCTFE-coating was less than that of metal, and was equivalent to or less than that of porcelain.
    2. Pin-point like plaque formation similar to that found on porcelain surfaces were observed on the PCTFE-coating.
    3. SEM observations of the PCTFE-coating revealed some traces made by the toothbrush. As a result, PCTFE-coating was found to be useful for decreasing the amount of plaque forma tion on those pontic surfaces where mechanical cleaning can not be maintained.

    Recently, the demand for a more natural and harmonious color of porcelain-fused-tometal restoration is on the increase due to the recent rise in esthetic values among the patients. However, the usual methodology of shade taking, color transmission, and color evaluation is not so precise.
    We have thus tried to resolve this problem with the aid of a computer color matching system for the purpose of reproducting the natural and harmonious color of porcelain-fused-to-metal restoration. To obtain the calorimetric and optical fundamental data of dental porcelains, we analyzed its absorption and scattering coefficients by using a spectrophotometer.
    It was concluded that there was a high positive correlation between the absorption and scattering coefficient to porcelain thickness in both the dentin and enamel porcelain layers. As the wavelength increased, the absorption coefficient tended to decrease and the scattering coefficient tended to increase. From this experiment, it became possible to determine the absorption and scattering coefficient of the dentin and enamel porcelain layers of any shade and thickness.

    To get a more natural and harmonious color of porcelain-fused-to-metal restorations, an objective and precise systematic method from shade selection to color evaluation is needed. Thus, the absorption and scattering coefficients were determined to develop a CCM system for porcelain-fused-to-metal restorations.
    The Kubelka-Munk Theory was applied on the dental porcelain, opaque, dentin, and enamel.From these data, we predicted the color of the porcelain mixtures from the both coefficients.
    From the results of comparing the spectral curves and analyzing the color differences between measured values and predicted values of porcelain mixtures, the following was analysed;
    1. In opaque, spectral curves of the predicted and measured values were exactly alike and the mean dE between two values was 0.39.
    2. In dentin, the spectral curved of the predicted and measured values were exactly alike, and the mean dE was 1.13. The measured values indicated a slight increase in the level of chroma and lightness.
    3. In enamel, the spectral curves were exactly alike and the mean dE was 1.16. The measured values indicated a slight decrease in the level of lightness. Therefore, it was possible to predict the color of opaque, dentin and enamel porcelain mixtures, by applying the Kubelka-Munk Theory.

    The purpose of this study is to measure the temperature distribution of focused energy by infra-red soldering machine. The result indicate following.
    1. The three dimensional heating area is an ellipse shape, and soldering area is about 10 mm in diameter centering around the focus.
    2. Temperature adjustment of INFRARED (NEY Co.) is to use Powerlevel, and of BEAMWERDER (YOSHIDA Co.) is adjusting the hight of the turn table.
    3. When soldering with focused energy with infra-red machine, it is adequate to solder at the focused level or the upper level, after pre-heating of the soldering objects at the lower level.

    The abutment teeth preparation with jacket crown for the maxillar right central incisor was prepared in Home Position. The following are the result of a study made on the influence to the prepared tooth form. The operators were five dentists who had 2-4 years clinical experiences and were made to prepare with 1.0mm width shoulder.
    1. The reduction of incisal edge was like the indication.
    2. As for the subgingival reductions, the proximal surfaces were deep and the facial and lingual surfaces were shallow.
    3. As for the degree of axial taper, angles of convergence were comparatively likethe indication, and prepared teeth were inclined to distal direction for imaginary axis of tooth crown before operation.
    4. The width of shoulder were insufficient except at the facial surface.
    5. The surface roughness on axial wall was almost acceptable, but the roughness on shoulder was sufficient at facial surface, while insufficient at others.
    6. As for Rough Value, smoothness of curve on finishing line was questionable.
    7. Tooth preparation of maxillar anterior teeth in Home Position, compared with posterior, is fairly easy to operate under mirror view, and the method is stable and available.

    Viscoelastic finite element method was attempted to apply to the removable prosthodontic field. To examine the accuracy of this analysis, the results obtained from creep test of soft lining materials were compared with the calculated results by using this analysis.Stress relaxation in the supporting tissue under the upper complete denture was simulated by using viscoelastic analysis.
    The results were as follows;
    1. The calculated results were in approximate agreement with experiment.
    2. When the occlusal table of the denture was move 0.3 mm to the vertical direction, the calculated results indicated the soft tissue acted as a part of the stress relaxation in the supporting structures.
    3. By using viscoelastic analysis, the time dependent deformation of the denture base and stress distributions in the supporting structures could be simulated.

    The purpose of this study is to reveal the relation between stomatognathic system and the systemic condition.
    In the present study, experimental occlusal interference was given to the first molar on main mastication side of 6 healthy subjects and the influence on the upright posture was evaluated through simultaneous measurements of changes in activity of antigravity muscles via electromyography, other than the measurement of loci of the gravity fluctuation for stabilograph before and after the interference was provided.
    The following results were obtained,
    1. Loci of gravity fluctuation
    1) All parameters tended increase 24 hours after the interference was provided.
    2) The decreasing trend was noted 24 hours after the interference was removed.
    3) At one week after the interference was removed all analysis items tended to restore to the normal range.
    2. Activity of antigravity muscles In some of the subjects, the muscular activity showed the same trend as the changes of analysis items of gravity fluctuation.
    3. The above results suggest that the evaluation of the loci of the gravity fluctuation may be helpful to assess the therapeutic effect of malocclusion.
