    This study was done to clarify the distortional behavior of heat-activated acrylic resin through processing. The temperature and distortion of flat 2 mm dumbbell specimens were measured with the lapse of time by using thermocouples and Rosette strain gauges.
    The results obtained were as follows:
    1. After heating at 70°C over a period of 90 minutes during processing, the strain in the specimen produced the tensile strain and the specimen showed a tendency to expand in this stage.
    2. During processing, polymerization shrinkage was not observed. It appears, therefore, that reaction shrinkage minimally influences this slender and long specimen.
    3. During bench-cooling, the specimen contracted coincidally with the decrease of temperature. The amount of distortion in the middle of the specimen was 3/5 against that of both sides, as both sides were restricted by stones.
    4. Immediately after removing from the flask, the contraction in the middle was increased because of elastic recovery, as a result, the differences between the middle and both sides decreaed.

    This study surveyed and compared the change of three dimensional accuracy of working models for IMZ system. Master models were designed to simulate a clinical situation in case of mandible distal free-end and total edentulous arch. Impressions were made using a transfer coping technique with polyoxymethylene (POM) and stainless steel impression post. Five casts were made in each case. Working models were fixed on the measuring jig, using a three-dimensional measuring apparatus (ZYZAX: Tokyo seimitsu Co.) and measured. Reference points were placed on a jig, working casts of impression posts. Coordinate points were compared between the master model and working models, and the three-dimensional change of distance was claculated.
    The results were as follows:
    1. The distortion tendencies of implant working casts differed, according to the characteristics of the impression post materials.
    2. Stainless steel impression posts were better, with lower quantities of distortion and standard deviations than the POM posts.
    3. Implant position influenced the direction of impression post distortion.

    Recently, the metal fused porcelain work has been utilized to outer crown for conical telescopic dentures. However, it has the problem of porcelain fracture, caused by the deformation of the outer crown for lower premolar which is worked as a retainer of the free-end saddle denture. Three kinds of skeleton, 15×6×1.2mm in dimension (Standard), reinforced with beam (Beam), and increased thickness to double (Double), were cast with an outer crown. Two kinds of dental casting alloy, Au-Pt alloy and Co-Cr alloy containing Ti, were used. Conical angle was 6°, and retentive force was adjusted to 750±50g on the metal model. The deformation of outer crown were measured under loading at the free-end skeleton. Measurement was carried out at mesial, buccal (lingual), and distal parts of outer crowns, and then the fracture of metal fused porcelain's outer crowns was investigated.
    Deformation of all test pieces increased at every additional stress. This tendency was more drastic in Au-Pt alloy than that of Co-Cr alloy containing Ti, due to different physical properties. Deformation of the Beam and the Double was more remarkably decreased than that of the Standard. The Beam exhibited the least fracture of metal fused porcelain's outer crown when compard with the other two types, due to the stress relieving function of the reinforced beams.

    The purpose of this study was to investigate the abrasion of tooth enamel by removable partial denture clasps. In vivo, replica of abutment tooth of removable partial denture was observed by SEM. In vivo, abrasion test of extracted tooth by experimental clasp made by 12% Au-Pd-Ag alloy was carried out. The relationship between disloading force and abrasion time was also investigated.
    Upon SEM viewing abrasion of tooth enamel was observed in case of casting clasp, but not in case of wire clasp.
    In abrasion test, enamel scratches parallel to tooth axis were found at more than 5, 000 abrasion times. Disloading force of clasp decreased rapidly within 4, 000 abrasion times and then decreased gradually until 10, 000 abrasion times.
    It was clear that enamel of abutment tooth was abrased by removable partial denture clasp, and suggested that the initial rapid decrease of retaining force was attributed to transformation or abrasion of clasps and later gradual decrease of retaining force was attributed to abrasion of tooth enamel.

    Bone morphogenetic protein (BMP), an inductive factor of bone ormation, has beenstudied for its clinical application. Hydroxyapatite (HAP) has been applied as a substitute material for hard tissue. The purpose of this study is to ascertain the use of BMP-HAP-Collagen pellets on rat parietal bone and to investigate bone formation in the pellets. Crude BMP of bovine bone was obtained by extraction with Gdn-HCl and gel filtration. HAP granules (30mg) and crude BMP (2mg) were combined with atelocollagen, and shaped into pellets (4.5mm in diameter, 1.5mm in thickness). As control, pellets without crude BMP were made. Pellets were grafted between periosteum and parietal bone of 6-week-old male Wistar rats. Rats were sacrificed at 1, 2, 6, 10, and 24 weeks after grafting. Differences in bone formation in the pellets were evaluated histologically and histometrically. In the experimental group, cartilage and bone were formed at 1 week, and quantity of newly formed bone was significantly increased compared with the control groups at 2, 6 and 24 weeks.
    These results indicate that atelocollagen was highly effective for fixation of particles. Furthermore, bone was formed earlier and more in quantity in this onlay graft of BMP-HAP-Collagen complex compared with the control group.

    Factors affecting bonding durability between three types of denture teeth (two abrasion-resistant plastic denture teeth and a plastic denture tooth) and a pour-type denture base resin were investigated. The bond strengths of Duradent (DU) and Real Crown (RE) were not affected by a water immersion period for up to one week, but significantly decreased after being immersed for one month. Endura (EN) showed a stable bond strength up to one month immersion. Thermocycling (500 cycles) also decreased the bond strengths for all denture teeth. The bond strengthsof Dichloromethane-treated denture teeth did not change even with one month immersion or thermocycling. The results of this investigation suggested that the treatment with Dichloromethane significantly would improve the bonding durability.

    The purpose of this study was to investigate the influnece of thickness of visible light-cured crown and bridge resins on its color changes.
    Tristimulus colorimeter was used for color measurement. Disc specimens measuring 5.0mm in diameter, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0mm in thickness were prepared with enamel, dentin and cervical color paste of each resin. The color changes between before and immediately after irradiation was measured. Color changes were expressed as L*, a* and b* uniform color space (CIE 1976 L*a*b* color difference formula) and total color difference value (ΔEab*, NBS unit) were calculated.
    ΔEab* value of each resin between before and immediately after irradiation was large and this change was attributable mainly to that of L* and b*.
    Δ value and ΔEab* value mainly increased according to the increase of speacimen thickness.
    1.0 vs 1.5 ΔEab* value, except NM, was larger than 1.5 vs 2.0 ΔEab* value.

    The purpose of this study was to compare the extent of tongue space with that achieved by the traditional method and alternative method. Five maxillary and mandibular casts from patients with an Angle Class I relationship were mounted on articulators so the opposing arch relationship could be studied by Moire topography. The casts were photographed and traced to locate the residual ridge crest zones and then superimposed to determine the state of the ridges overlapped. Five waxed dentures were made using the alternative and traditional method for each patient. The tongue space and the distance between right and left posterior teeth from the first premolar to the second molar were measured by a personal computer. Mean spaces of the five waxed mandibular dentures for 5 subjects, using the alternative setting method, were from 9.2(±0.19)cm2 to 11.3(±0.27)cm2. On the other hand, the spaces utilizing the traditional method were from 9.2(±0.07)cm2 to 10.8(±0.22)cm2. Three of the 5 subjects were statistically different (p<0.05; Student's t-test). These results suggest that the overlapping area between maxillary and mandibular ridge crest zones are useful for a wider tongue space for complete dentures.

    In order to rehabilitate patients wearing maxillary prosthesis back to normal standards as soon as possible, a new speech training method was developed. This new system enables one to distinguish certain vowels and plosives using the partial auto-correlation (PARCOR) method, that is based on a linear prediction equation. Acoustic parameters indicated by the PARCOR coefficient can recognize the part where transition from the frontal consonant to the following vowel sound has taken place. This procedure involves the following steps;
    1. Each vowel sound is first discriminated by monosyllable pattern matching to reduce the count to 1/5 the size.
    2. The phoneme having maximum resemblance to the spoken monosyllable is selected and recorded. The analyzed data comprises 25 vowel sounds and 305 following vowel sounds for discrimination of vowels, and 130 plosive sounds for recognition of plosives from 5 different male speakers.
    Results showed the recognition rates of the vowels and plosives to be 95.3% and 78.5% respectively. Thus, this new system showed that it could be used as an important speech analyzer to aid in training and developing speech therapy.

    The IMZ implant system incorporates stress-absorbing elements, such as the intramobile element (IME). There are varying reports regarding the characteristics of the IME however, its effectiveness is still controversial.
    In order to evaluate the effectiveness of the stress-absorbing elements under dynamic loading conditions, the stress-transfer characteristics around a single freestanding IMZ implant were investigated with three types of internal elements: an IME made of polyoxymethylene, an intramobile connector (IMC) consisting of a polyoxymethylene head and titanium screw, and a metal element (Metal-E) made of stainless steel.
    The vertical (10-kgf) and horizontal (2-kgf) dynamic forces applied to the surface of the superstructure and the strain values around the implant were measured with the strain gauges.
    The results were as follows:
    1. Under axial dynamic force, the three types of elements had no significant difference in the stresses around a single freestanding implant.
    2. Under vertical tilting dynamic forces, a more uniform stress around a single freestanding implant was observed with IME and IMC than Metal-E.
    3. Under horizontal dynamic force, a more uniform stress around a single freestanding implant was observed with IME and IMC than Metal-E.
    The stress-absorbing elements were significantly effective under the dynamic conditions, while they were not effective under the static conditions.

    The influences of porcelain surface conditions on the adhesiveness of composite resin was investigated. The porcelain surfaces were polished with # 1000 SiC paper and then treated by using one of five procedures: 1. Non etching, 2. etched with phosphoric acid, 3. etched with phosphoric acid and cleaned with ultrasonic wave, 4. etched with hydrofluoric acid, 5. etched with hydrofluoric acid and cleaned with ultrasonic wave. After the application of Cosmotech Primer, Laminabond Porcelain Primer of Clapearl Bonding Agent, Laminabond Composite Paste was applied and was polymerized by photoirradiation.
    When Cosmotech Primer was used, hydrofluoric acid etching gave higher bond strengths. On the other hand, the bond strengths were not influenced by the porcelain surface conditions when Laminabond Porcelain Primer or Clapearl Bonding Agent was used. SEM picture showed greater roughness created by hydrofluoric acid etching and no difference between the specimens with the ultrasonic cleaning and those without cleaning. EPMA analysis of treated porcelain surfaces also showed there were no significant differences of the metal oxides as the components of porcelain between the specimens with ultrasonic cleaning and those without cleaning.
    The concentration of hydrofluoric acid affected the porcelain surface conditionafter etching.

    The purpose of this study was to establish the diagnostic parameters on stomatognathic function with the six degrees of freedom jaw movement data in 15 male subjects. All subjects, in the range of 24 to 44 years of age, had full dentition and were without symptomatic TM disorders.Diagnostic parameters were selected for the range, velocity, acceleration, etc of jaw movement.The results suggested that jaw movement data have diagnostic value for the stomatognathicfunction.

    The adhesive strength of dual-cured composite resin for dowel-cores to the dentin treated with various combinations of pretreatment agents, primers and bonding agent, was measuredand compared with one another. In this study, four trial materials were used, that is 10% NaOClgel, tooth primer, paste-type PANA VIA and dual-cured composite resin.
    The following results were obtained.
    1. In all pretreatment agents, there were some combinations of primers and bonding agents, with which high adhesive strength was obtained.
    2. In consideration of the total treatment time, the combination of tooth primer and Clearfilphoto bond was evaluated to be the most desirable because of high adhesive strength and thereasonable treatment time of 100 sec.
    3. Paste-type PANAVIA tended to decrease the adhesive strength to the dentin.
    4. Cohesive failure in the dentin occured after compressive shear adhesive strength tests intwelve of fourteen combinations investigated.
    5. The SEM image of the dentin treated with tooth primer showed less demineralization thanthat of K-etchant gel.

    The purpose of this study was to examine the bending profiles of composite resin coating cast clasps. The I-bar and Akers clasps made of cobalt-chromium alloy were cast using a tapered wax pattern. One of the chemical bonding methods (Silicoater MD, Kulzer Co.) wasapplied to adhere composite resin to a metal surface. The breakage and the bending rigidity ofcomposite resin coating clasps were evaluated.
    The results were as follows:
    1. There was no significant difference in the bending rigidities of clasp arms between beforeand after composite resin coating.
    2. After repeated bending tests to the tips of the clasp arm at 10, 000 times in 0.25mmdeflection, neither crack in composite resin surfaces nor separation in resin/metal interfaces wasoccurred in any specimen.
    From these results, it was indicated that the composite resin coating cast clasps could be appliedto clinical cases and the bending rigidities were controllable in the same way as conventional castclasps.

    The effect of immersion disinfection in 2% glutaraldehyde solution on stone cast was examined from the standpoint of surface roughness and linear dimensional stability. Two productsof dental stone and improved stone were selected as the experimental material, respectively.Surface roughness of the heat curing acrylic resin specimens cured on the disinfected stone casts wasalso examined.
    The immersion disinfection procedure revealed no significant effect on the linear dimensionalchange of the stone cast. On the contrary, the surface roughness of the stone cast showed anincrease following the immersion procedure. The disinfection procedure showed no significanteffect on the surface roughness of the specimens cured on the improved stone casts, whereas thesurface roughness of the specimens cured on the stone casts significantly increased followingdisinfection. And in the case of the stone cast, the surface roughness of the specimens indicatedabout the same or smaller value than that in case of the improved stone casts.
    From these results, it was revealed that the disinfection of the stone cast with 2% glutaraldehydesolution does not affect the liner dimensional change and the surface roughness of the heat curingacrylic resin cured on the disinfected stone cast is clinically acceptable.

    To elucidate the long-term development of symptoms as to craniomandibular disorders, a questionnaire was sent, in May 1992, to 200 patients referred to the clinic of removableprosthodontics of the Hospital attached to Osaka University Faculty of Dentistry, who had beentreated from 1984 to 1991. Ninety-seven (48.5%) patients answered the questionnaire. Theresults from their answers and clinical protocols were as follows:
    Sixty-one (63.0%) patients developed symptoms 3 to 99 months after the termination oftreatment. Their most common symptoms were TMJ sounds (38.6%), muscle dysfunction (31.1%), trismus (15.9%) and TMJ pain (11.4%), which were 97% of all. Twenty-five (28.3%) patients had recurrence of symptoms: the ratio of recurrence in the patients who had stoppedreceiving regular treatment (46.4%) was significantly higher than that in those who had continuedto the end (18.8%). Few patients had recurrence within a year after treatment, therefore, it issuggested that a clinical recall examination should at least be performed once a year from thetermination of treatment for many years.

    The purpose of our study was to develop a computer aided system for designing and fabricating removable dentures (CAD/CAM system). In our newly developed system, anatomicaland morphological information of denture space including edentulous residual alveolar ridges andsurrounding tissues were obtained from a maxillomandibular double impression mounted on a highspeed 3-D laser scanning machine. Artificial teeth arrangements, outline of polished surface, anddenture border location were determined at a work station by means of the database of a standarddenture fabrication. Then 3-D data established at the work station was transferred to a 3-D laserlithography machine and a mandibular complete denture was fabricated with photo-cured resinmaterial.

    We studied the working condylar movement in the lateral movements in 40 normal young adults. The following results were obtained:
    1. The working condylar movements were classified into 3 types:
    1) rotation type, 2) shift type and 3) winding type
    2. The shift type included 1) external side shift, 2) internal side shift and 3) reciprocal sideshift.
    3. The range of motion was smallest in the rotation type, was largest laterally in the shift type, and was the largest anteroposteriorly in the winding type.
    4. The difference of movement pattern between rotation type and shift type could not beidentified by incisal movement.
    5. The rotation type was observed more in the cuspid-guided and the cuspid-premolar-guidedlateral occlusions. The group-functioned occlusion had more shift type than the others.
    6. In the winding type, the mandible was guided more posteriorly at the early stage of lateralexcursion in the V-shape, and was guided more flatly and anteriorly in the A-shape.
    7. It was suggested that the lateral occlusal guidance was one of the most influential factorsfor working condylar movement.

    The influence of various factors on dimensional changes and surface roughness in the interior of castable apatite ceramic crowns (CACC) was investigated. The influence of concentrationof colloidal silica liquid (liquid concentration) and cement on fit in CACC was also investigated, and the marginal fit in CACC and castable mica-crystal ceramic crown (mica-crystal crown) wascompared.
    The following results were obtained.
    1. Dimensional changes and surface roughness in CACC were significantly influenced by L/Pratio and liquid concentration.
    2. A significant correlation was observed between liquid concentration and dimensionalchanges, surface roughness in CACC.
    3. The setting expansion in CACC investment increased with increases in the liquid concentration, while there was little change of thermal expansion.
    4. Cement film thickness at margin of CACC decreased with increases in the liquid concentration i. e. the marginal fit in CACC was significantly influenced by the liquid concentration.
    5. The marginal fit in CACC and mica-crystal crown was clinically acceptable, and themarginal fit of CACC was better than that of mica-crystal crown.

    This article discussed the dimensional accuracy of Olympus Castable Ceramics (OCC) crowns at the stage of as-cast and crystallization. The master die technique and three coordinate measuring method were used for their measurement. Moreover, the surface roughness of inner crowns were measured and following results were obtained.
    1. OCC crowns, heat-treated at 850°C were rather expanded than at 900°C or 950°C in the master die technique. But the differences between at 900°C and 950°C were not significant.
    2. In the master die technique, each crown fabricated with special investment liquid, which was diluted with 25%, 50% and 75% distilled water showed expansional ratios of 0.35%, -0.23%and -0.86%, respectively.
    3. In the master die technique, buffering factors, ringless, one fold of liner and two folds of liner did not affect the expansional ratio.
    4. In three-coordinate measuring, each diameter of as-cast crowns expanded equally in the range of 1.0-7.0mm from occlusal plane. But, 9.0mm near the cervical portion expanded less than the others.
    5. In three-coordinate measuring, about 0.70-0.81% shrinkage were founded at the inner diameter of crystallized crowns.
    6. In measuring for surface roughness of inner crowns, crystallized crowns were roughened more than as-cast ones in both of Ra and Rmax.

    The purpose of this study was to offer the setting conditions for the dietary menu samples nutritionally balanced on the guidance for complete denture wearers. Three type menus: normal type menu, fine cut type menu and porridge type menu are prepared for degree of activityin mastication and swallowing. Nutritional content of the foods was analized by our computercode.
    The following results were obtained.
    1. Energy value in each menu were about the suggested allowances, but all other nutrientswere sufficient.
    2. Vitamins often become overly sufficient because of the expectation of loss of them duringcooking.
    3. The food constitutions in each menu had an inherent characteristic tendency of foodselection in each food group.

To maintain the protein value, the normal type and fine cut type menu contained much fishand meat, while the porridge type menu contained much milk/milk products, eggs and grainproducts.As a result of developing the menus according to the same suggested intake of nutrient, thedifferent tendencies of food selection in each menu type were obtained.

    The difference in the tissue reaction in the tissue-titanium interface between mature (22-week-old) and young (6-week-old) rats was examined by using light microscopy with decalcifiedsemi-thin sections (1μm) and undecalcified sections (40μm) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). A titanium implant (diameter=1.0mm: height=1.5mm) was inserted into a tibia.Rats in both groups were killed on the 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th, 14th and 28th day after operation. The bonycontact ratio and area and thickness of the newly formed bones in the undecalcified section weremeasured with an image analysis system.
    On the 5th day, calcification in newly formed tissue was observed in young rats, and on the 7thday, in mature rats. On the 7th day, the mass of bone-like tissue in the mature rats was smaller thanthat in young rats. On the 28th day, the implant in both rats was almost enclosed circumferentiallywith newly-formed bone (thickness=20-30μm). However, by the image analysis, the bonycontact ratio and the area of newly formed bone in the mature rats were significantly smaller thanthose in the young rats. SEM revealed collagenous fibril-like structures (thickness=2-5μm) inthe bone-titanium interface of the mature rats, but obscure structures (thickness=0.4-0.6μm) inthat of the young rats.
