    The purpose of the present study was to compare back strengths and electromyogram of related muscles of 10 healthy subjects as well as investigate influences of postural changes in horizontal maxillomandibular relation to back strength. The following results were obtained:
    1. Back Strength
    1) The maximum back strength was observed in the apex position in almost all subjects.
    2) The back strength tended to be larger with an anterior deviation than with a left or right deviation.
    3) No clear pattern for left and right deviations was found in back strength.
    2. Muscular Activity
    1) The maximum activity of the temporal muscle and the masseter muscle was observed in the apex position in many subjects. The activity of the temporal muscle tended to be larger on the deviated side than on the non-deviated side. The activity of the masseter muscle tended to be larger on the right side than on the left side in about a half of the subjects.
    2) The activity of the sternomastoid muscle and the trapezius muscle was almost consistent in all subjects regardless of maxillomandibular relations. The activity of the trapezius muscle tended to be larger on the right side than on the left side.

    The aim was to determine more systematically the relationship between the stomatognathic system and the sense of equilibrium. I investigated the effects of experimental changes in mandibular position on the vestibulo-ocular reflex (nystagmus), (a sense of equilibrium), using an electronystagmograph.
    Using 9 normal subjects, with 4 sustained mandibular positions each, (centric relation and anterior, left and right mandibular-deviated positions), the effect of each experimental load on the vestibulo-ocular reflex (nystagmus) and clinical findings was examined. The results were as follows:
    1. Nystagmus
    1) Spontaneous nystagmus and positional nystagmus were often evoked. They were found least in the centric relation, more in the anterior-deviated position, and mostin the left-and rightdeviated positions.
    2) Spontaneous nystagmus was not observed while the eyes were open in a bright room. It was observed while the eyes were open in a dark room or while the eyes were closed.
    2. Clinical Findings
    Subjects complained of unpleasantness or slight pain around the temporomandibular joint and its surrounding muscles during application of horizontal mandibular retention equipment. Only unpleasantness was reported in the centric relation, but slight pain was reported in other positions. The degree of pain was low in the anterior-deviated position and high in the left and right deviated positions.
    These results revealed that lateral deviation of the mandibular positions and the retention of such positions affected spontaneous nystagmus and positional nystagmus, suggesting that the deviation and retention of mandibular position affects not only temporomandibular joints and muscles but also the vestibular system.

    An occlusal diagnostic system was evaluated for clinical applications. This system consists of pressure sensitive sheets (DENTAL PRESCALE ®, Fuji Photo Film Co.) and the analyzing computer (OCCLUZER FPD 703 ®, Fuji Photo Film Co.). Effects of velocity and duration of pressure and temperature upon color forming of pressure sensitive sheets were examined. While simulating intraoral applications, the accuracy of this system was examined using maxillary and mandibular casts.
    The results were as follows:
    1. There was no effect velocity of pressure and temperature upon color forming.
    2. There was no statistical difference in color forming between the sheets pressed of one second and five seconds. But the sheets pressed for ten seconds showed higher color forming than the sheets pressed for one second.
    3. When the forces measured by this system were subtracted from the load on the maxillary and mandibular casts, the mean values of the remainders were -0.68 kgf (Type-R, 30H) and -0.65 kgf (Type-R, 50H). The standard deviations were 1.57 kgf (30H) and 1.09 kgf (50H).

    Polyelectrolyte complex (PEC) membranes, represented by substances such as chitin and chitosan, possess properties suitable for biocompatible materials in terms of substance permeability and hydrophilicity/phobicity. In this study, 15 types of polyanions and 6 types of polycations were combined to prepare PEC membranes. In addition, the combination ratio of each polymer was changed to alter the surface charge balance of the PEC membrane. Human periodontal ligament was cultured on the PEC membranes obtained by various combinations to study cell attachment and growth. It was found that the combination of polycations and polyanions, the properties associated with polymer function groups, and the surface charge were particularly important factors affecting cell adhesion and proliferation. Among 270 types of PEC membrane tested, 74 types had higher cell adhesion rates and 28 had higher adhesion rates than the control.

    Various self-curing resins are used in provisional restorations and denture repairs. But the existing products cause problems, such as color stability and durability.A new self-curing resin, UNIFAST II® which was recently developed to solve these problems, was evaluated as to clinical safety and usefulness.
    The evaluation was made on provisional restorations in 60 clinical cases as to reactions of pulp and periodontal structures, and also as to color stability and abrasion of the restorations.This examination was performed from 14 to 235 days after restoration was completed.
    Denture repair cases were evaluated in 15 clinical cases as to the condition of the denture supporting mucosa, fitness of the denture, color stability and durability from 91 to 279 days.
    As a result, the new self-curing resin did not show any deteriorating effects on the pulp and the periodontal structures.No clinical problem was observed in denture repair cases, either.From these clinical experiments, the new-self-curing resin was judged to be a safe and useful material.

    The purpose of this study was to analyze the occlusal stress under complete denture base.
    In this study, the effect of the separating elements and loading points were performed utilizing the finite element method. The results were as follows:
    1. As the separation of elements decreases, the stress distribution area become limited.
    2. The area of the greatest stress concentration was found in mucosa under the loading point.
    3. The area of stress concentration of cortical bone was found on the lingual side.
    4. The lower bite rim model has a tendency to be displaced to the lingual side.

    The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect on the bending strength of denture base resin relined with REBARON LC and to compare it with other direct relining materials.
    The following experiments were performed as follows.
    Experiment 1: The bending strength of denture base resin (ACRON) relined with four hard direct relining resins was tested in the three-point flexure test.
    The immersion time and the thickness of relining resins were varied in this test.
    Experiment 2: The bending strength of four denture base resins relined with REBARON LC was tested in the three-point flexure test.
    The following results were obtained:
    1. TOKUSO REBASE showed the greatest bending strength and deformation of all relining materials, but there was no significant difference.
    REBARON LC showed a similar bending strength to other relining materials.
    2. As the immersion time increased, the bending strength of REBARON LC, TOKUSO REBASE and EPOREX decreased and the bending deformation of Rebaron, TOKUSO REBASE and EPOREX increased.
    3. Regarding the influence of relining resin thickness on the bending strength, the 1.0 mm thickness of REBARON LC had the greatest bending strength followed by 0.5 mm and 1.5 mm.
    4. ACRON had the greatest bending strength when relined with REBARON LC, followed by ACRON MC, Palapress and METADENT.

    The purpose of this study was to develop a three-dimensional reconstruction method to analyze the shape of the casts of edentulous jaws. We measured the shape of the cast of the edentulous upper jaw by the three-dimensional shape measurement system (XYZAX PA 400 A, Tokyo Seimitsu Co. Ltd.). The contour of the cast was measured by stepping at 1 mm intervals. Measured points were modified at intervals of 3 mm, 2 mm and 1 mm and were interpolated with spline curves to obtain the wire frame models. The contours reconstructed from modified data were compared at 11 sites with the one from the basic line measured by stepping at 0.2 mm intervals. As a result, the divergences of three contours with the base line reconstructed by spline curves were 149μm, 86μm and 32μm in the average distance on Z coordinate respectively. And the accuracy of the reconstruction was good at the middle and the posterior part of the cast, but it was bad at the anterior part due to of the frenula, the rugae and the areas with steep slopes.
    It was suggested that this method is useful for analyzing the shape of casts of edentulous jaws though modification of the measuring interval according to the parts of the casts is necessary.

    When making a complete denture, the horizontal and sagittal inclination of the incisal guide plate of the semi-adjustable articulator have to be determined by denture stability and the anterior arrangement of the denture teeth.
    The purpose of this' study was to investigate the influence of the inclination of the incisal guide plate on the pressure distribution under a complete denture and to obtain a guideline for adjustment thereof.
    The results were as follows:
    1. When the sagittal inclination of the incisal guide plate increased, the pressure distribution under the upper and lower complete denture did not change in the centric occlusion.
    2. When the horizontal inclination of the incisal guide plate increased, the pressure distribution on the supporting tissue did not change remarkably.
    3. In one-sided occlusion, the pressure value increased as the horizontal inclination in the buccal region of the upper molar on the working side and lingual region of the lower molar increased. Reduction of pressure was observed in the palatal region of the upper molar and buccal region of the lower molar.
    4. In one-sided occlusion at the eccentric position, the pressure values increased as the horizontal inclination in the upper buccal region on the working side and lower lingual region increased. Reduction of pressure was seen in the palatal region and lower buccal region. These pressure changes were larger than those in one-sided occlusion at the centric position.

    Compensatory movement of articulation organs to reduce dysphonia due to the denture base differs among individuals. These differences are considered to be associated with the palatal form in each individual. We evaluated the differences in the palatal form on phonation after insertion of the palatal plate by analyzing Formant frequency (difference between F1 and F2) which corresponds to the antero-posterior tongue position. In group A with a deep palate, the plate markedly affected the difference between F1 and F2 during phonation of final vowels (/a/, /o/). However, in group C with a shallow palate, no marked changes were observed.

    A new system for detecting occlusal tooths contact at various jaw positions was devised. This system was composed of special micro photo sensors, and tooth contacts can be measured with minimum stress to patients.
    Reproducibility of the sensor's accuracy and a tolerance limit of the surface inclination of the target were proved to be sufficient for the application to patients.
    Sensor heads were attached to the buccal surfaces of the upper molars with removable metal sprints, and targets made of self-curing resin were also fixed to the lower molars opposite to each sensor head. The sensors were adjusted to work in accordance with tooth contacts, and mandibular position could be easily distinguished, i.e., right side, center or left side.
    It is suggested that continuous observation of the occlusal parafunctions such as bruxism is performed in detail with more accuracy than other methods. Moreover, combining this system with EMG would enable us to simultaneously measure the frequency and power of tooth contacts.

    The interest of patients in vital tooth bleaching has created a demand for aesthetic dental treatment.However, very few studies have determined the effect of vital bleaching upon dental hard tissues and the surrounding tissues.The purpose of this in vitro study was to determine the effects of 10% carbamide peroxide solution, which was the reagent for patient-applied home bleaching, on enamel and root surfaces using scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS).Mesial halves or distal halves of extracted teeth were bleached for 7 consecutive days by 10% carbamide peroxide solution in custom-fabricated trays.Other samples were subjected to the same protocol in acidulated (pH 5.0) hydrochloric solutions.The untreated and treated sample halves were examined for differences in surface texture and were compared to enamel etched with 37% phosphoric acid.Significant differences in enamel surface texture were detected between the control and treated enamel surfaces in all groups.
    Furthermore, the removal of the deposition originated in periodontal membrane was detected in bleached root surfaces.These findings were also verified with EDS spectrum.

    Many acoustic studies about effects of wearing prosthesis have been reported. Especially, soundspectrogram has been useful because it can observe time and frequency and loudness simultaneously. However, it was difficult to observe in detail the short time duration of consonants; therefore, we used MacSpeech Lab II that can extend the time duration and tried to observe stop consonants.

    Abnormalities of soft tissue of TMJ components are common in craniomandibular disorders. For the diagnosis of these abnormalities, MR imaging technique is useful. However, the relationship between MRI findings and signs and symptoms of craniomandibular disorders remains unclear.
    In this study, MRI findings and signs and symptoms of craniomandibular disorders were compared for 150 patients (300 TMJs) with craniomandibular disorders.

    The purpose of this study was to clarify the confusion matrix in pronunciation of patients wearing maxillary prosthesis. The subjects consisted of 28 patients with maxillary defects.The patients were classified acording to the HS system classifying the maxillary defect. Articulation tests in pronunciation were performed after placement of their maxillary prosthesis, and then the confusion matrix was analyzed in relation to the extent of maxillary defect.
    The results were as follows.
    1. The articulation score averaged 77.4%, however, the scores were lower in patients categorized as H 2 and H 4 than in patients categorized as H 1 and H 3.
    2. In Japanese vowels, mishearing of/i/for/e/and vice versa was evident in the prosthesis wearing conditions.
    3. The consonants which were analyzed according to the manner of articulation tended to take affricates for fricatives, rolled ones for plosives, and plosives for fricatives.
    4. Which regard to the point of articulation, there were some tendencies to take palatals for alveolars and glottals for palatals.
    The results described above suggest that the patients wearing maxillary prosthesis practice the pronunciation by themselves and need to train positively with a speech trainer as well as in order to become rehabilitated as soon as possible.

    In quantifying the amount of masticatory muscule activities at the occluding phase in complete denture wearers, we tried to develop the measuring and analyzing system composed of electromyograph and Mandibular Kinesiograph (MKG K 6-I). We studied the measurement accuracy of MKG K 6-I, and the occluding phase was recognized under the setting positional threshold value up to 2 mm vertically. Masticatory muscular electromyogram and mandibular movement under the tapping movement could be simultaneously measured, and the amount of the masticatory muscule activities in the occluding phase could be quantified from the integrated EMG.
    The results of this experiment were as follows.
    1. Measurement accuracy was good in vertical movement of MKG K 6-I but poor in lateral movenient.
    2. Using this measuring and analyzing system, the quantification of masticatory muscule activities which corresponded to opening, closing and occluding phases became possible.
    3. The ratio of muscular activities in the occluding phase was about 70-80% of total muscule activities under the tapping movement.
    4. A difference between masseter muscles and temporal muscles in the ratio of the amount of muscule activities was not found in the occluding phase.

    Our department has been researching the influences of changes in particle size distribution on the physical properties of luting agents. It is said that luting agents are largely affected by contact with water. In the present study, changes in the physical properties after contact with water at the time of cementation were determined in several types of glass-ionomer cement for Luting (Gcement), which differed in particle size distribution, by using an ivory or agar jig. The physical properties of G cement were also examined after pretreatment of the abutment tooth with a surfacetreatment agent and a temporary cement inside the ivory jig.
    As a result, the greater the content of fine particles was, the greater the compressive strenght, tensile strength and scratch hardness of G cement tended to be. G cement containing high proportions of fine particles was not likely to be affected by water. Pretreatment suchas temporary cementation or surface-treatment prior to cementation for crown or bridge formation was found to be effective for preventing deterioration of the physical properties of G cement.

    This study consisted of clinical observations of 59patients who have been treated with 78 hydroxyapatite (HA) blade implants since August 1986. Four implants of 4 patients were removed from the jaw because of pain and mobility, and 5implants of 5 patients were broken at the neck portion. We examined histologically one broken implant which was removed from a human mandible.These sections showed good adaptation between bone and implant without a fibrous layer. The fracture was suspected to be due to the stress concentrationat the neck portion because of the increasing mobility or the troubles of abutment teeth.
