We compared the detectability of low-contrast objects made by 2mm beads in diameter using screen-film and computed radiography (CR) systems, respectively. A Medium-speed screen-film system (BH III A) was used as a conventional system, and three sizes of ST imaging plates (IP) were used as the CR system. Effects of incident dose to the IP (ie, ST and HR) and image processing (ie, contrast enhancement, unsharp masking) on the detectability of low-contrast objects were also measured. Observer performance tests were carried out using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis. The results indicated that the detectability of low-contrast objects in the CR system radiographed under isoexposure with the screen-film system was comparable to that of the medium-speed screen-film system. The detectability of low-contrast objects in the CR system depends on the size of IP used and the incident dose; however, the detectability of low-contrast objects decreases with a decrease in the incident dose to the IP, and increases with use of contrast enhancement or unsharp masking techniques.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate clinical usefulness as the quantitative assessment of the cerebral blood flow by venous sampling supersede arterial a smpling using N isopropyl-(^<123>I)-p-iodoamphetamine (IMP) and single-photon emission computed tomography. The method employed Ono's report using the Rutland method. The mean value of total cerebral blood flow by arterial sampling was 388.0±79.4 (standard deviation) ml/min, and that by venous sampling was 448.5±110.3ml/min. The value of temporal lobe, including basal ganglia where there was no evidence of neurological, electroencephalographic, and other imaging findings was 44.0±3.8ml/100g/min using arterial sampling and 49.7±6.0ml/100g/min using venous sampling. (n=22, mean age 57.6) The value of cases with poor peripheral circulation varied a great deal between the arterial and venous samplings. There was a good correlation between arterial and venous samplings in 76 patients without poor peripheral circulation. In conclusion, this method is available for noninvasive quantitative assessment of the cerebral blood flow in patients without poor peripheral circulation.

Respiratory motion of diaphragm causes motion artifacts and misregistration in a mask-image-mode DSA. Both exhaling and inhaling holding methods (EHM and IHM) with statistical analysis during angiopraphy were investigated. In EHM, diaphragms moved less than 2mm in caudal direction until 10 second from the beginning of the angiography series. Frequent values were 7.244 in EHM and 15.22 in IHM (P<0.01). In conclusion, we recomend that the EHM is useful for hepatic DSA.

Effect of a variable collimator and eight cones on electron beam parameters is reported. Depth-ionization curves are measured for electron beams (nominal 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 and 14 MeV each) produced with a microtron in which one of the 8 cones or the variable collimator is installed. Leakage radiation through the variable collimator is also measured. The peak absorbed dose takes influence of the structure of the cone installed, and shows discontinuous change with the radiation field size. On the other hand, the depth of 80% doesn't. When the variable collimator is installed, both the peak absorbed dose and the depth of 80% dose change continuously with the radiation field size. Relation between the cone structure and the amount of the scattered electrons is also discussed. The results are applicable to the design and the assessment of applicators in which the amount of the scattered electrons is controlled.

Recently, an inverter X-ray generator has become wide spread in the area of mass stomach survey. This time, the characteristics of tube voltage waveforms, short exposure time, the action of photo-timer and reproducibility for two types of inverter X-ray generators were studied. Furthermore, a comparison between the inverter generator and capacitor discharge generator were performed. As a result, the usefulness of the inverter generator was substantiated.

We should be avoided in technical reports. A new method was developed for using the off-center-beam in stereotactic radiosurgery, using the center-over function of an asymmetrical multi-leaf collimator of a linear accerrator which allows the off-center-beam available for rotation therapy. First, following experiments of off-center-beam, percent depth dose, beam flatness and dose profile under gantory rotation. The test results proved that off-center-beam had excellent availability.

An superparamagnetic iron oxide particle preparation was evaluated as a potential contrast medium for liver MRI. This contrast medium, administered intravenously, is expected to provide a negative contrasting effect by reducing the signal intensity in the normal portions of the liver and to enhance the MR image of the tumor. After administration of this preparation, T1 and T2 values were shortened. The signal intensity decreased more linearly in the T2-weighted than T1-weighted image. In clinical studies, the degree of the decrease in the signal intensity in the normal portions of the liver was greater with the dose, in the T2-weighted than T1-weighted image, and in the spin-echo than field-echo mode. CNR was increased after as compared with before administration in both the normal and tumoral portions of the liver. From these findings, this contrast medium is considered to markedly enhance the contrast between the normal and tumoral tissues of the liver especially in T2-weighted images of MRI and to be useful for MRI studies of liver tumor.
