There are two types of imaging plate (HR and ST) in Fuji Computed Radiography System. We studied the reduction in patient dose using ST with equivalent image qualities through the use of image processing (ST_pro) for HR. As a result, when the image quality of HR and ST_pro were almost the same, the incident dose of HR and ST_pro were about 0.13 μC/kg and 0.09 μC/kg respectively. Therefore, the patient dose using ST_pro is expected about 30% reduction to HR.

We studied the image qualities of Dupont Ultra-Vision (U-V) systems. These systems were compared with Fuji HR systems. U-V screens use a high density yttrium tantalate phosphor emitting an ultraviolet ray. Basic imaging properties in both systems, such as characteristic curves, relative speeds, X-ray attenuation rates, crossover, MTFs and Wiener spectra were measured. MTFs of U-V systems were significantly higher than those of HR systems. Wiener spectra of U-V systems were inferior to those of HR systems. The visual image qualities of U-V systems were evaluated by observer performance tests using "Paired preference test". Visual evaluation of bone radiographs using U-V systems showed that they were superior to HR systems. These visual evaluation results agreed with basic imaging properties.

We evaluated the image quality and the effects of scatter decreasing using various magnification factors, so as to investigate the usefulness of a semi-magnification technique for mammographic. The measured scatter fraction indicated that anti-scatter efficiency of this semi-magnification technique was inferior to that of using a grid. An observer performance test, using RMI-156 breast phantom images, was carried out using 7 radiological technologists. The results indicated that this semi-magnification technique (factor 1.2 and 1.3) with a grid was significantly better to the non-magnification technique (factor 1.0). This was probably bacause the effective noise was reduced and the detectabilities for lesions were improved due to radiographic magnification. Considering the image quality and the object area that can be projected on a film, the technique using magnification factor of 1.2 with a grid was the most suitable for screening mammographic screening.

When video signals of X-ray fluoroscopy were transformed from analog to digital ones with an image digitizer, their digital characteristic curves, pre-sampling MTF's and digital Wiener spectral could be measured. This method was advant ageous in that it was able to carry out data sampling because the pixel values inputed could be verified on a CRT. The system of image analysis by this method is inexpensive and effective in evaluating the image quality of digital system. Also, it is expected that this method can be used as a tool for learning the measurement techniques and physical characteristics of digital image quality effectively.
