    Intrafault materials derived from two localities within the Atotsugawa fault of Central Japan have been investigated to elucidate the characteristics of the fault. In each fractured zone within the fault, two different zones are clearly recognized; the one zone is composed mainly of very fine fragments and developing limitedly both side of the fractured zone in contact with parent rocks, and the other is composed mainly of coarse fragments and constituting the main part of fractured zone.
    Textures of the intrafault materials are in random arrangement of fragments showing rounded-angular shape, or in complete arrangement of fragments showing lenticular-anastomising shape. The grain-size frequency curves indicate no peakes or the remarkable peak of d=10-3 μm. Quartz grains within the intrafault materials under the scanning electron microscope have smooth surfaces keeping breakage or fracture surface, or small undulated, a little corroded surface.
    The mineralogy of 2μ<fractions from the intrafault materials is principally including illite, chlorite and montmorillonite, and occasionally with quartz and feldspar. Geochemically, within the zone composed mainly of very fine fragments, loss of SiO2, Na2O and K2O, addition of H2O+, H2O- and Total Fe, addition or loss of CaO have been relatively found, comparing with composition of parent rocks.

    The natural conditions of Kagoshima in the southern Kyushu are characterized by the properties from the great volcanic products “Shirasu” in topographic and geological aspects and from the typhoon hitting area with heavy rainfall in meteorological features. Consequently, slope-failures, floods and high tides frequently occur during storms or heavy rainfalls, and bring about a great many of subversive disasters which inflict serious damage on inhabitants and others. The main purpose in this paper is to present a basic concept on the prevention and the decrease of disasters from the standpoint of damage sufferer and to contribute to a countermeasure against disasters, analyzing the descriptions of disaster records from 1946 to 1980. The amount of precipitation and the history of land use are adopted as the parameters of natural factor and anthropogeny factor respectively, and damage index is defined in order to investigate the historical change and the correlation of disasters.
    Type, frequency of occurrence and scale of damages caused by disasters show a change with the transition of these parameters. For instance, the loss of human lives caused by slope-failures have the tendency of increase since the 1960's in spite of the uniform condition in precipitation.
    Also, some relationships between damage value and condition of precipitation ar ascertained. The relationships between the annual damage value, H, the annual amount of precipitation, R, and the number of day of precipitation over 100 mm/day from April to October, T, are given by
    H=a exp (bR) and H=cTdwhere, a, b, c and d are coefficients depended on the occurrence condition of damages.

    The feasibility study is under way for the tunnel construction under the Hoyo straits to connect the Shikoku and the Kyushu islands. Several serpentinite bodies crop out in the Saganoseki Peninsula which would be the exit of tunnel in the Kyushu.
    Tunnels in serpentinite are often deformed by ground squeezing and heavy earth pressure. Magnetic prospecting was carried- out to obtain more detailed information about serpentinite in the northern part of Saganoseki Peninsula where small serpentinite outcrops are scattered along Sambagawa metamorphic belt.
    The following results have been obtained from this prospecting:
    (1) Virtually all magnetic anomalies in this area are caused by serpentinite and the three-dimensional structures of serpentinite have been clarified by the analysis of magnetic anomalies.
    (2) Serpentinite bodies are distributed almost continuously beneath the earth's surface in the east-west direction which is parallel to the axis of the Saganoseki Peninsula.
    (3) Serpentinite in this area had been inferred to have thin sheet shape, but it was clarified by this prospecting that most serpentinite bodies have subsurface dikelike roots.
    (4) The subsurface shapes of exposed or concealed serpentinite bodies have been inferred from the magnetic anomalies.
    (5) Magnetic prospecting is very effective method for the survey of serpentinite bodies.
