Optical behavior of 3-D photoelastic model, in which continuous rotation of secondary principalstress axes and secondary principal-stress differences exist, is represented by a general formula based on Aben's equation. Two scattered-light methods are explained with this formula: one is conventional scattered-light method and the other is the one recently by authors. We propose that nondestructive measurement of 3-D stress distribution in the photoelastic model by using both scattered-light methods can be realized easily. Experimental confirmations of the proposition are made in the case of a frozen stress sphere under compression.

In this paper, the stress wave propagating in a steel bar with rectangular cross section is observed by using the holographic interferometry with pulsed laser, and the distribution of the in-plane displacement is obtained. In order to evaluate the displacement produced by the stress wave, the relative fringe order method is convenient, but there are two fundamental problems in this measurement. One is that holographic images recorded by pulsed laser are usually reconstructed by continuous beam with different wavelength and the reconstructed images are more or less distorted. The effect of wavelength of the reconstruction beam on the fringe order is discussed. The second problem is that if the spatial array of the fringe order is not monotonous, usual method can not be used to obtain the relative fringe order. A process is presented for determining the relative fringe order in such a case. From the hologram record of the transient wave in a steel bar, the in-plane displacement distribution along the center line of the surface is obtained. This result is compared with that measured by use of a strain gauge, and the former agrees with the latter very well.

The stress distribution in a bolted joint and the pressure distribution on the bearing surface of a nut have been examined by three-dimensional photoelastic experiment. As a result of this experiment: (1) The experiment shows that the stress distribution in a bolted joint has unaxially symmetric, since the screw part has an unaxi-symmetrical shape. (2) The pressure distribution on the bearing surface of a nut has an unaxial symmetry corresponding to that stated above. (3) It can be seen that the screw part of the bolted joint is acted upon by the bending moment due to the asymmetric pressure distribution.

A computor system of principal stress-analysis and automatic tracing of stress trajectories employing a micro-computor is described. The boundary condition and interior distribution of principal stress-difference, both obtained from two-dimensional photoelastic pattern, are put in the computor using a digitizer and Laplace's equation with respect to sum of principal stresses is solved numerically by the iteration procedure at 25×25 points over the model area. The stress trajectories are automatically traced form the obtained σ1 and σ2 without recourse to isoclinics which tend to be blurred and troublesome to determine accurately.
