To be certain the safety hyperbaric oxygen therapy(HBO)for the patients who are dependent on drugs controlled by volumetric infusion pumps, 5 infusion pumps including SHARP MP28, IMED 927, IVAC 530 and Terumo STC 503 and 9 syringe pumps including ATOM 235, NIPRO SP60, IVAC 7000 and Terumo STC 521 were tested during the simulated HBO of 2,0 and 2.8 ATA.
As long as pumps were operating properly, there were no difference in infusion volume of volumetric infusion pumps at the infusion rate of 100 ml/h(infusion pump)and 6 ml/h(syringe pump), compared with infusion volume at normobaric and each HBO condition.
The IVAC 530, which is regulated via a drip chamber, stoped after the drip chamber was filled with fluid during compression. Two out of 6 Terumo STC 521 and a Terumo STC 503 which contain sealed air within switch panel, did not function properly during compression and decompression.

From 1980 to 1987, a total of 112 patients with bone and joint infections were treated by hyperbaric oxygen therapy(HBO). Excellent results were noted in 98. The remaining 10 patients were improved. Four patients showed recurrence. The transcutaneous oxygen pressures were measured during HBO to estimate the effect of oxygenation.

In the summer of 1987, we investigated the dive profiles of pink coral divers who had dived with SCUBA using trimix, off Saldinia Island of Italy, under the direction of Dr. Zannini's laboratory at the University of Genova. The investigation was carried out as a joint research between his laboratory and ours. We recorded dive profiles with DPRAS(Dive Profile Recording and Analyzing System)in 21 dives of 4 divers. We examined venous gas emboli(VGE)using Doppler bubble detector after their surfacings as well. According to the dive profiles, the maximum dive depths of each dive were ranged from 79.1 to 92.8 meter and the bottom times were from 16 to 30 munutes. Decompressions were carried out according to the schedules based upon the tables calculated by Drs. Zannini and Magno. VGE rate was 47%(9/21). No bends, however, occurred among them.

We tried to prove the usefulness of the SEP as an index of efficacy of the OHP therapy for the cases of cerebral infarction. SEPs and clinical symptoms were studied in 70 patients with acute cerebral infarction and in 12 normal volunteers before and after OHP treatments. Although changes of the SEP after the OHP were little in volunteers, an increase of the N20 amplitude or a shortning of the CCT was shown in a half of the patients. There recognized the correlation between SEP findings and clinical symptoms. From this study, the SEP was thought to be useful for the dicision of efficacy of OHP treatments for cerebral infarction.

The effects of HBO was reported in 27 patients with cerebral ischemia due to major artery occlusion. The brain function was evaluated by the EEG topography recorded before and during HBO. In 22 patients, tomographic images of cerebral blood flow and oxygen metabolism were obtained, using positron emission tomography (PET). Six of 14 patients with internal carotid artery occlusion showed the significant improvement of EEG topography during HBO. Only 2 of 13 patients with middle cerebral artery occlusion, however, showed that improvement. In all 6 patients with misery perfusion on PET studies, topographic images of EEG were improved. Therefore, the efficacy of HBO for cerebral ischemia may be considered only in the patients with good collateral circulations angiographically, and misery perfusion on PET studies.

Budd-Chiari syndrome is a rare disorder of hepatic vein or inferior vena caval occlusion, and present with hepatic enlargement, pain, tenderness, ascites, jaundice, and portal hypertension.
We treated the patient having recalcitrant ulcer with skin graft and HBO.
The patient is a 65-year-old woman diagnosed as having Budd-Chiari syndrome. She had ulcer on her distal right lower extremity at 1970 and underwent an operation of stripping.
From 1982 to 1986, she had ulcer every year, and had been treated with HBO only. But she had big ulcer on her right lower leg at 1987. It is difficult to heal the ulcer by HBO only, so we used skin graft and continued HBO therapy. She was discharged after 60 days with her ulcer completely healed.
At 1988, her big ulcer recurred. We treated with skin graft and HBO. she was completely healed and discharged after 40 days.
In conclusion, HBO is useful to treat recalcitrant ulcer.
