Crack detection paint was applied to surfaces of a transverse rib welded joint specimen of SM400B steel, and the effects of the paint on visual detection of fatigue crack growth were examined by performing a fatigue test. Obvious color development was observed in the paint when fatigue cracks propagated along weld toes. At intervals in the test, surface SH wave tests were also carried out to verify the fatigue cracking, and the test results were compared with the color development in the paint.
