To quantitatively clarify estimation error for length of a through-thickness fatigue crack by a coating material containing dye microcapsules, the crack propagation and beach mark tests were carried out on center-cracked tension (CCT) specimens. They were coated with the coating material under various surface conditions. The fatigue crack length and the colored length by the microcapsules were also measured using images taken by a digital camera. The measurement results indicated that the estimation error of the crack detection coating material depends on the coating thickness, regardless of whether with or without the protective coating. The error in applying the material to a general paint coating is much lower than that to a grit blasted surface.
