Purpose: The purpose of this study is to describe schizophrenic patients' acceptance of medication after receiving psychoeducation from various professionals.
Method: The research subjects were 8 schizophrenic patients (5 females, 3 males) admitted to the acute units of the Departments of Psychiatry at private psychiatric hospitals in the Hokuriku and Kinki regions. Semi-structured interviews were used during the data collection, and the 'constant comparison' of the Grounded Theory Approach was used for data analysis.
Results: Schizophrenic patients' "acceptance of medication" was explained through "opposing categories," and assessed in relation to "categories of illness acceptance" and "categories of future outlook."
Conclusion: It is necessary to develop a results-based psychoeducation program in order to enhance clinical outcomes.

The purpose of this study was to clarify the development of emotional agitation during the treatment of children based on the child-health professional relationship, to obtain guidelines for reducing such agitation. Participant observation and semi-structured interview were conducted in children aged 4 to 10, their family, and the relevant medical professionals, and the development of emotional agitation was analyzed by phenomenological interpretation. The results demonstrated that: 1) there was a gap in the orientation of purpose between children and health professionals; 2) the gap made the children feel they were not being respected, which was expressed as emotional agitation; and 3) the frequency of such agitation varied depending on whether health professionals' orientation of purpose was focused on the children's feelings and pains. The characteristics of the mutual interaction in the child-health professional relationship suggested that a "compulsive, suppressive relationship" develops when health professionals' orientation of purpose gives priority to treatment, while a "cooperative, supportive relationship" develops, with a possible reduction of children's emotional agitation, when they focused on children's feelings and pains.

The purpose of this study is to understand distinctive characteristics of SOC in patients with schizophrenia and clarify how factors such as living environment, ages, marriage, life satisfaction and smoking etc are associated with SOC. Examinees are 90 inpatient at chronic stage and 72 patients with schizophrenia who are being assisted at a day-care center. Self consciousness scale survey was conducted as the methodology of this research for basic attributes, 13 Japan's SOC scale items, health standard and life satisfaction, which were analyzed later. As a result of analysis, aggregated SOC score of schizophrenia patients was low and aggregated SOC score of hospitalized patients were higher than that of day-cared patients, but it cannot see a significant difference. Therefore, it can be assumed that a difference of living environment cannot be a factor to affect SOC. Meanwhile, multiple regression analysis shown that factors affecting SOC of schizophrenia patients were health standard, life satisfaction and age. Given the analysis, improving SOC needs an assistance to enhance the self-reliance and extension of daily life operation and health standard to mind and body.

The purpose of this study was to analyze and elucidate the factors related to sleep-wake patterns of the frail elderly. The subjects were 76 elderly patients (17 male, 59 female) in a long-term care hospital in a prefecture. Fifty-nine day's sleepwake patterns of the subjects were examined through a sleep log recorded by nurses and care workers. The relationship between sleep parameters and sleep-related factors, which included age, gender, Barthel Index, HDS-R, sleep-inducing drugs, and frequency of participation in activity care programs, was analyzed. Factors of age, Barthel Index, HDS-R, and frequency of participation in activity care programs were significantly related to the sleep parameters. Results of multiple linear regression analysis revealed that most sleep parameters were influenced by the factor of frequency of participation in activity care programs. These results suggest that patients' participation in activity care programs may improve sleep-wake patterns in the frail elderly.

The purpose of this study is to elucidate the effects of voluntary abdominal breathing using the diaphragm on the autonomic nervous response, cardiovascular responses and urine hormones in healthy women. Cardiovascular responses during the abdominal breathing were the similar responses during the spontaneous breathing. Heart rate during the abdominal breathing was gradually decreased and blood pressure was shown a few increases, but not significantly. Using the Rolenz plot methods of the Heart rate variability, we analyzed the autonomic nervous responses during the abdominal breathing. The abdominal breathing at 6 breaths / min significantly increases Log (L×T) indicated the activities in parasympathetic nervous response compared with that of resting state before the abdominal breathing. Noradrenaline, adrenaline and cortisol concentration in Urine after the abdominal breathing were significantly lower than that of resting state before the abdominal breathing. It is suggested that the voluntary abdominal breathing using the diaphragm similar to the spontaneous breathing induced the relaxation to the reaction of a living body. This effects about the abdominal breathing appear potentially beneficial in manage of the stress.

The purpose of our study was to investigate the factors contributing to the burnout of research associates by taking account of individual parameters and job satisfaction. Using the Japanese version of the Maslach Burnout Inventory (the Japanese MBI) and a questionnaire about individual parameters, teaching aptitude and job satisfaction, we conducted a survey of 1,165 research associates in colleges of nursing in Japan. 549 (47.1%) of the 1,165 approached replied, with 528 of returned questionnaires proving valid for our study.
The findings revealed that 1) Burnout was not related to sex, age, number of years of clinical experience, number of years as a research associate or work position. 2) Burnout was however associated with academic background, job motivation and attending lectures in the field of teacher training. 3) Since burnout was associated with job satisfaction, we suggest that it is all-important for the individual research associate to avert burnout and realize greater job satisfaction by preparing sufficiently for her overall duties in the areas of nursing practice, supporting lectures, and social activities.

The purpose of this research is to investigate how consciousness of home care has changed--especially among women who take care of their elderly parents-in-law with dementia--hoping this result is to be utilized in the way of home nursing care. The samples were collected from seven women who had been taking care of their elderly parents-in-law with dementia for more than two years. The "Grounded theory" approach was used to analyze the phenomenon observed in this research. It was found that the process of the alteration of consciousness was composed of 6 categories with 16 concepts under them. Changes in the society such as declining birth rate, aging, starting of care insurance, and increase of women's working rate have had effects on the consciousness of women who are involved in home care. Observation of this research suggests some new perspectives on the ways of home nursing care.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between; 1) emotional labor performed by critical care nurses and their stress reactions, 2) Sense of Coherence (SOC), the ability to keep their mentality healthy under the stressful environment, and their stress reactions. This study becomes the fundamental database for establishing the measures of mental health in the organization. The seventy critical care nurses in "A" university hospital were involved in this study. The questionnaire included following standard scales; Emotional Labor Inventory for Nurses (ELIN), the Japanese edition of SOC scale (SOC scale), and the Japanese edition of the General Health Questionnaire 28 (GHQ). As a result, there was no significant correlation between ELIN and GHQ. However, in lower SOC group, there was significant positive correlation between "Exploring and understanding", "Expression of caring" in ELIN and "depression" in GHQ. In addition, SOC scale and GHQ were in significant negative correlation. The results showed that the SOC was related to stress recognition and strain, and which suggests the SOC may contribute to the improvement of mental health in the workplace.

We carried out an experimental study using rats to investigate the characteristics of skin lesions induced by extravasation of anticancer drugs. We used four types of anticancer drug: asparaginase, which is a non- vesicant drug; cisplatin, which is an irritant drug; and mitomycin and vinblastine; both of which are vesicant drugs. The skin lesions induced by extravasation of these drugs were studied macroscopically, microscopically, and hematochemically. The results revealed clear differences in skin lesions between mitomycin and vinblastine. Although both are vesicant drugs, the lesions produced by mitomycin were noted in the deep skin tissue, whereas the lesions produced by vinblastine were located in superficial areas of the skin. findings indicated that two types of skin lesions were induced by vesicant drugs: macroscopically visible lesions and non-visible ones. The visible skin lesions were easily recognized by physical examination, whereas the non-visible ones were not. The skin lesions induced by asparaginase and cisplatin were milder in degree than those induced by mitomycin and vinblastine.
These findings suggest that macroscopic observation cannot always reveal the whole skin lesons induced by extravasation of antitumor drugs. There fore, detailed skin examination is necessary if extravasation of these drugs occurs.
