Skin temperature changes and subjective symptoms during the use of an invalid rubber cushion by a supine patient was studied.
The use of an invalid rubber cushion caused increases in skin temperatures. The longer an invalid rubber cushion was used, the greater was the rate of skin temperature increased. In addition, the patients tended to feel increasing fatigue and pain in both the waist and legs. These results suggest that the following guidelines should be followed when using an invalid rubber cushion. The patient should be placed in a supine, leg-stretched position, which results in the least pressure to his lower-back. The invalid rubber cushion should be adjusted about 4cm high. The invalid rubber cushion should be used for 20-30 minutes.
