    Checking of a coordinate measuring machine (CMM) was conducted based on ISO 10360-2 : 2009, Part 2 : CMMs used for measuring linear dimensions, 8.3 Interim check. Workers have difficulty performing checks of CMM because this ISO standard shows no concrete working procedure for checking. Six prefectural public research institutes in the Tohoku area conducted round-robin test evaluations of CMM performance using artifacts of two materials (low CTE ceramics and carbon tool steel) in order to make a working indicator of checking. Uncertainties of coordinate measurements, as calculated using ANOVA and SN ratio of measurements, were compared and verified. Results show the characteristic that the artifacts should provide and suitable checking methods for 8.3 interim checking of the ISO standard.

    This paper presents a novel technique for reducing the infl uence of such speckle phenomenon on the confocal optical system. Its measurement principle has been applied to non-contact displacement sensors. Both the height and lateral resolutions of confocal displacement sensors on the market are regarded as practically small enough. However, those sensors are inevitably infl uenced by speckles of reflected light and so they tend to detect unreasonable profile signal.
    This paper presents a novel technique for reducing the infl uence of such speckle noise. Its actual effect was analytically explained through the numerical simulation. Finally, the experimental results using the developed confocal profi ling sensor revealed that the outliers can be fully corrected and the confocal sensor gives the same measured profi le as that by a stylus instrument.

    In previous paper, groove position error and groove warp are substantially generated in micro tool-width end milling process. Therefore, finish milling following the tool-width milling is required to append for improving the groove accuracy. In this paper, it is discussed experimentally how to mill on side walls with position error or groove warp on finish milling. It is made clear that up-milling is less influential on the position error on a side wall than down-milling, because cutting force in down-milling is more cumulative in forming a chip segment from engaging rotating angle to a side wall angle(θ=π), although cumulative cutting force to mill a side wall can be ignored in up-milling. As the above-mentioned reason, up-milling is recommended as finish milling in order to remove a position error and groove warp on side walls.

    Although the log-aesthetic curves are generally expressed only by an integral form of the tangent vector, it is possible to interactively generate and deform them and they are expected to be utilized for practical use of industrial and graphical design. In this paper we propose a novel method to solve the G2 Hermite interpolation problem with the log-aesthetic plane curve as well as a new method to generate an S-shaped curve for G1 Hermite interpolation. The methods proposed in the paper have been implemented as a plug-in module for a commercial CAD system and are successfully used for practical design.
