The roughness of finished surface is expressed generally either by the maximum height H, which is obtained from surface profile recorded through the tracer point method, or by the N. F. roughness 1/α ×10 in the reflection method. The latter is derived from the distribution function of the intensity of reflected rays, assuming the equation of the distribution as follows :
I =
Ioe-αθ, where θ is the angle of incidence measured from the direction of the maximum intensity
Io.
As to these two expressions, only experimental formula by Dr. Fukushima,
H_??_1/ 80 × N. F., is known. In the present paper, theoretical investigation on this relation is reported and the method to obtain the mean surface profile from the distribution function of the reflected rays is described.
The result obtained by this method is
H =
k × 1/
n × 1/α, where
n is number of grooves per unit length of the finished surface and
k is constant. This result is also proved by experiments.
