    This report deals principally with variation of the tapping torque by the left spiral and the straight fluted taps for the duralumin and the cast iron FC 20. As conclusions,
    (1) The helix angle of the left fluted taps is recommended to be 13 to 15 deg. for the duralumin because chip flow becomes smooth.
    (2) From the dimensional analysis, the following equation for tapping torque is derived.
    T=p2deks(k1+k2Vp/D)
    where T=tapping torque, p=pitch, ks=specific cutting force, V=cutting speed and D=thermal diffusivity. And also k1, k2 are the constants.

    The polygonal profile is machined by the lathe tool which is reciprocated lateially and synchronized with the revolution of the main spindle.
    To study peculiarities of such an unordinary lathe turning, three components of cutting forces were measured by the wire resistance dynamometer in these experiments.
    We can understand that the cutting forces are under the cyclic variation with the lateral movement of cutting tool, but only a little time-lag is observed between the cutting force curve and variation of rake angle.
    As the results of comparison between the turning of circular and polygonal shaft of the same condition, we can make out that the radial force is influenced extremely by the polygonal turning, and the axial force is in the second place and the tangential force is affected a little.
  • 砥石の目つまりについて

    以上,超音波振動砥石において目つまりが起こりにくくなる機構を解明するためにおこなった実験結果を要約すると次のようである.
    1) 超音波振動を砥石に与えると砥石の透過性は非常によくなり,細かい切りくずは加工液とともに砥石内を通って外部に噴出されやすく,これが目つまり減少の一原因となっている.
    2) 砥石表面に付着している切りくずに約110エルステッドの磁場をかけるとほとんど除去される.そして,この程度の磁場の強さで鉄粉を付着させたものに超音波振動を与えると振幅の増大とともに鉄粉の落下率は増し,空気中より液中のほうがキャビテーションによる洗浄効果を受けるため目つまり防止に一層の効果がある.
    3)超音波振動面の静止摩擦係数は無振動のそれにくらべて激減し,それがために切りくずが砥石表面に付着しにくくなることが推察される.

    The theoretical and experimental performances of float-area-type flow meters were reported in previous reports (1st to 6th reports).
    In this report, firstly, in order to improve the performance of a flow meter with a by-pass tube reported in the 6th report, adequate orifices are installed in the flow pathes to maintain the ratio of the flow rate through the taper tube to that through the by-pass tube constant independent on the position of the float. The performance of this flow meter with a by-pass tube and orifices is analysed by theory and shown to be in good agreement with the experimental result.
    Secondary, in order to study the dynamic properties of float-area-type flow meter, the transient response of the float motion to a step function input of the flow rate is studied both theoretically and experimentally. Good agreement is found to exist between both results. Based on the theory developed in this report, analyses are made on the effect of the factors influencing the time constant of this flow meter and the results are illustrated.

    The life and the final failure of the carbide cutting edge in the machining without chatter are examined firstly in this paper to ascertain the effects of chatter vibrations on the life of carbide tools. It is consequently ascertained that in the machining without chatter all tools hold out for a long time, and the ISO P10-tool has particularly the superior properties for this machining, and also that the critical values of the, flank wear or the depth of cratering as a reasonable standard for a carbide tool life vary according to cutting conditions, and further, that the types of the final failure of the cutting edge vary also with cutting conditions, namely, the wear increases on the whole as fast as the severe cutting conditions. But in small feed machining extraordinary flank wear on the toolnose is liable to occur and only in higher speed machining the flank on the toolnose wears wider than that on the main cutting edge.

    A fine mechanical machining treated in this paper may be called by the name of Vibration Lapping, those tool vibrates tangentially along the work operating like the ordinary lapping machining.
    In the present report, is related the experimental apparatus and some experimental and theoretical results on the machining speed of the Vibration Lapping for glass.
    The main results are as follows :
    1) The machining speed of the Vibration Lapping for glass is proportional to about v1.5 with respect to the mean velocity of the tool v (machining amplitude a×frequency f×4).
    2) Similarly, it is proportional to about p1.2 with respect to the lapping pressure p, but when the lapping pressure exceeds the limit lapping pressure pl, it becomes to show the saturating tendency and has no relation to the lapping pressure.
    3) The relation between the lapping pressure p and the amplitude ratio r is expressed by
    p=πF0/4μS√1-r2.
    4) Assumed the machining speed W is expressed in the form W=Kpαaβ, the optimum amplitude ratio r0 is theoretically given by
    r0=√β/α+β_??_0.75,
    and it is also confirmed to have a good agreement with the experimental result.
    Then the optimum lapping pressure p0, is given by
    p0F0/4μS√α/α+β.
    5) In the case that the lapping pressure is extremely high, the machining speed takes the maximum, when pl>p0, at the optimum amplitude ratio r0 and, when pl<p0, at the amplitude ratio corresponding to the limit lapping pressure pl.

    The form errors of a spherical part of a Rockwell diamond indenter are analysed by applying micro-interferometry and microscopic collimation which have been developed by Kentaro Yamamoto. The conclusions are as follows ;
    1) The apex form of the indenter is in many cases made up of eight spherical parts owing to ununiform machinability of diamond considering fringe patterns of a micro interferometer.
    2) In the view field of a microscopic collimator several images of a pin hole of the collimator can be observed corresponding to the spherical parts mentioned above. And the images are converged or diverged as the indenter is displaced along the optical axis of the collimator.
    3) The position of the indenter where the images are converged indicates the position of the center of the indenter within the angular aperture of the objective lens.
    4) The convergency of the images depends on the amount of the form error, and so the accuracy of determining the position of the center of curvature depends on its form error. When an indenter is finished in high grade the accuracy of the positioning is ±3 microns with con fidence coefficient of 95%.

    Grinding performances of treated wheels are studied in order to clarify the grinding mechanism in various atmospheres. It should be considered that the frictional force plays an important role in a grinding process. The frictional force, Ff, and the coefficient of friction between wheel and work material, μ, can be decided by the experiments of surface grinding with several width of work material under the same condition. Besides, the index x which shows the percentage of normal force partly supported by the grains is able to calculate. According to these thinkings, the effects of treatments and several kinds of grinding fluids are estimated with μ, Ff/Ft, x, Ff and also with the grinding ratio and skin temperature. Small value of μ and small percentage of Ff in the appearent grinding force will be recognized in the treated wheel grinding which results the good performances equivalent to the wet grinding. Moreover, the grinding ratio becomes large in the treated wheels, it makes the wheel life be long.
  • Tomlinson式測定法の厳密な基礎式

    This paper relates to the analyses of the measured value on the Tomlinson undulation recorder. In the preceding report, the approximate fundamental equations were obtained and the solving methods of them were shown. But they were based on the assumption that the large pitch diameter helical gear can be regarded as a rack plate.
    In this report, the accurate fundamental equations and these solutions are obtained, in which the effects of the twisting and bending of the tooth trace are considered. They appear when the helical gear has a small pitch diameter. Especially, on the C-type undulation the fundamental equations are the same form as that of the apploximate analyses and the solutions can be obtained easily without any unknown constant. When the undulation is not a C-type and the measured values contain unknown K-constant, the analyzing method of obtaining the undulation which has the least amplitude is shown. Further, the relation between the errors by the use of approximate analyses and the value l/d0, is estimated.
