    This study was carried out to achieve the following two aims.
    (1) The first aim is ot measure the values of residual stresses caused by various heat treatments and to examine their characteristics.
    Applied heat treatments are as follows.
    (i) General hardening and tempering, (ii) Isothermal heat treatment (Marquench),
    (iii) Salt bath nitriding, (iv) Induction hardening, (v) Flame hardening. It is defined hitherto in many literatures that the existence of any sort of residual stress is negative to wear resistance but the compressive stresses on the surface of steels are effective tofatigue strength.
    (2) The second aim is to seek the reiations between the results of investigation on the residual stresses of steels caused by such various heat treatments as enumerated in (1) and the durabilities of those steels in use as stated in (2).
    As the result of this study, the method of heat treatment which is effective both to wear resistance and to fatigue strength has been clarified.

    One of the recently developed machining methods to attain better cutting performances is the criogenic machining. As the method of cooling, an internal cooling device by means of liquid nitrogen and liquid carbon dioxide is utilized in the present experiment. The refrigerated turning tests of carbon steel S45C, austenitic stainless steel SUS27 and hardened tool steel SKD11 have been conducted in view of tool life and cutting temperature.
    Within the cuttting speed range tested, that is, 190 to 375m, 'min, the tool life is increased by the refrigerating method. The improvement of tool life is emphasized when cutting austenitic stainless steels SUS27 with a P10 carbide tool, the gain factor being about 3.1. For the combinations of carbon steel S45C and P10 carbide tool and hardened alloy tool steel SKD11 and M10 carbide tool, the gain factors are 1.4 and 2.3, respectively.
    The tool-chip interface temperature can be lowered approximately 0 to 66 deg. (Centigrade) by utilizing the internally cooled tool.

    Production lapping of lead zirconate-titanate ceramics are dealt with lapping rate, parallelism, yield and machining time including cutting-off time, since ceramics are machined as planeparallel, slender, thin plates in using for relay switches. The results obtained are as follows : (1) The order in lapping rate is A (no additive) >D (added Cr) >C (added Nb) >B (added Fe). Strong specimen C has a yield of 95%. (2) The difference in plate thickness within 10μ and the parallelism of 2μ are obtained from plane-parallel lapping, where the motion of specimens is restricted in carriers. (3) The concentration of lapping vehicle influences on lapping rate only by a factor of 5%. Supplying vehicle at a rate of 150 cc/min is desirable for preventing from breakage of plates. (4) Cut-off thickness is chosen as 0.3 mm regardless of the kind of ceramics. The whole machining time in lapping plates of 0.3 mm thick to 0.2 mm thick is shortened by a factor of about 40% than in lapping plates of 0.5 mm thick.

    Wear characteristics and tool-life curves in machining of low and medium carbon steels with various types of cut-away tools made of carbide and high speed steel are described and compared with those for conventional tools.
    Although an artificial reduction of natural tool-chip contact length usually reduces both crater and flank wear, there always exists optimum value of contact length below which tool-life is shortened. The optimum length depends on side rake angle of the tool and is found that the smaller the rake angle, the shorter the length becomes.
    In comparison of tool wear at the optimum contact length, it is found that flank wear is somewhat increased, but crater is substantially reduced as the rake angle is decreased.
    Tools with sufficiently reduced contact length show a special type of crater which is not formed on the first rake face, but mainly develops along the second rake face. This characteristic is well explained by the theory of cutting mechanism presented in the previous papers.
    Not only cutting temperature but also shape of cutting edge has a great importance on tool wear even in high speed machining. The wear mechanism appears to be explained as a stressdependent rate process.

    One of the types of electrolytic lapping is studied for the purpose of making a hole in the cemented carbide alloy. Cathode tool rotation and anode work vibration promote the electrolytic and mechanical removing processes. Electrolyte slurry is water solution of NaNO3 5%, NaNO2 5%, NaF 2% mixed with abrasives of 320 mesh SiC or B4C. Metal removal rate 0.6 g/min is obtained in the following condition : work GTi40 (WC 80%, Co 20%), abrasives SiC, tool section area 1cm2, tool rotation 450 rpm, work vibration 950 cpm, amplitude 0.2 mm, current 55 A.
    Suitable working operation enables to be got a hole with taper of 2 100 and diameter accuracy of ±0.02 mm.
    The working effect of electric current which varies with the vibration is studied by means of a pulse current source synchronized with the mechanical vibration. The removal effect of current flowed in the seperate phase is four times greater than that in the contact phase. The current in the seperate phase weakens the surface layer of the carbide alloy and increases the mechanical removal. The current in the contact phase contains the current which has no effect for metal removal.

    Sliding phenomena of cutting edges are important peculities that have to be taken into consideration on making clear cutting mechanism in grinding.
    From the above-mentioned viewpoint, the effect of cutting velocity and interference angle on the sliding phenomenon has been discussed in previous papers.
    In this report, we discussed the effect of rake angle of cutting edge on the sliding phenomenon in cutting where the depth of cut increased linearly, and observed the cutting mechanism by using high speed camera.
    The results are as follows.
    Elastic and plastic sliding length of cutting edges increase with the increase of rake angle. The region of chip formation is devided into two regions of chip formation in shear type and in continuous type.

    Angle of chip flow, cutting ratio and coefficient of friction on tool face in cutting of three different steels are formulated in a form of power function of tool shapes and cutting conditions by applying a statistical technique. From these nine functional relations, an equation to predict chip flow angles which includes cutting ratio and friction coefficient and is valid for all steels has been established. Validity of this equation is also checked in cutting of a free cutting steel.
    This expression is useful to understand the influences of the complicated cutting mechanism with a tool having a round nose, machinability of materials, affinity between chip and tool materials, roughness of tool face and cutting fluid on the chip flow angle. Cutting ratio and friction coefficient are not so much sensitive to the chip flow angle, and they make only few degree difference under the same cutting conditions for four steels used in this experiment.
