    This paper describes the results of an investigation into the directions and effects of an oxygen jet in certain cutting operations conducted at cutting speeds between 8m/min and 200m/min. The oxygen is respectively jetted for a cutting point from the four directions along the side rake face, side relief face, side cutting edge and front relief face. In this experiment, by using a newly developed high-sensitivity cutting tool dynamometer and a quick stop device for observing chip forming mechanism, medium carbon steel S43C (JIS) are turned with carbide tool P30 (JIS). To see from what direction the oxygen jet should be supplied in order to obtain the highest possible effect, the cutting phenomena.is experimentally compared with that of the conventional dry cutting. The experimental results obtained are as follows. The jetting methods other than the method of supplying oxygen jet in the direction along the side rake face, compared with the conventional dry cutting, are seen to show an advantageous effect to some extent in the cutting phenomena only in low feed range. On the other hand, in the case of the method of supplying oxygen jet along the side rake face, the effect is found to be especially excellent in the whole range of feed, and moreover, the range of the effective cutting speed is found to be extended about twice toward the high speed. Thus, the method of supplying oxygen jet in the direction along the side rake face is proved to be the best of four jetting methods.

    The researches for the influence of the surface finish, the measuring force, the work-piece material and the feeler configuration on the accuracy of the length measurement are divided into three parts : measurement of flat work-pieces by a flat anvil (1st Report), measurement of flat work-pieces by a spherical stylus (2nd Report), and measurement of cylindrical workpieces by a flat anvil. The present paper deals with the case of the diameter measurement of cylinder by a flat feeler. Applying the theory of the mechanism of contact between the smooth plane and the rough cylindrical surface, the relation between the measuring force and the measured size of cylindrical work-pieces is obtained theoretically. The results of the theoretical analyses are compared with the experimental data for the mean measured size and the spread of the individual measured sizes caused by the surface irregularities of the workpiece. It is found that the larger the surface roughness the larger are the error and the spread of the measured sizes. The effect of the size of the feeler on the accuracy of measurement is likely to be more important than the effect of the diameter of the work-piece.

    In a pick-and-place mechanism, an adequate overlap between x and z direction motion reduces transfer time. The best overlap ratio is calculated which gives the minumum transfer time under the condition that the maximum acceralation is limited.
    The best overlap ratio is affected by the cam curves and by the dimentions, but the 'onehalf overlap method ' gives a practically satisfactory solution.

    The fly milling tests were performed on several abrasive grains for application to heavy grinding by means of a lathe at a speed of 1800m/min. In each case the workpiece plate (S 45 C steel) was inclined 1 mm in 1500mm. The abrasive grains tested are regular 2 A, microcrystalline, roasted 2A, roasted microcrystalline, and sintered grains. The length of scratch was measured using optical projector and the maximum depth of scratches obtained. From these measurements chipping fracture probability, chipping height, etc., were determined and discussed depending on the physical characteristics of each grains. The sintered grains have exceptionally high resistances to chipping fracture. The roasted 2A or roasted microcrystalline grain was seen to fracture less frequently than the 2A or microcrystalline grain. The microcrystalline and the roasted microcrystalline grains indicated less chipping height than the other two grains. As a result, the sintered grain is the most desirable from the viewpoint of chipping fracture, followed by the roasted 2 A or the roasted microcrystalline, the microcrystalline, and 2A.

    It is well known that gears used in watches are designed considering the influence of center distance variation.
    The purpose of this paper is to compare the characteristics of IF gears with those of several other kinds of gears under the influence of center distance variation.
    The results are summarized as follows.
    1) The variations in torque ratio and velocity ratio of IF gears are smaller than those of conventional watch gears.
    2) Usually, IF gears have smooth transition of contact from one pair of teeth to the next in spite of center distance variation.
    3) IF gears show the maximum efficiency levels, even when the center distance is decreased.

    The demand for the small precision gear used for many kinds of controlling mechanism and electric tools has recently increased so much. In order to obtain the small gears which run quietly and have durability, it is desirable to raise the gear cutting accuracy and to im-prove the surface durability by hardening the tooth surface. If it is possible to cut accurately with a hob the hardened and tempered gear blank, a great improvement in the gear production is attained. The experiments were made to confirm this possibility by using the suitable hob and hobbing machine; better results are obtained when Molybudenum (Mo) high speed steel M35 is used and the hob has a full radius tip. Other results in this study are as follows. The double starts thread hob is preferable to the single start thread hob. The gear should be cut with low speed and high feed. Chloric oil is suitable for hobbing hard gears. The endu-rance and the cutting efficiency of the hob depend on the rigidity of the hobbing machine. The life of the hob can be increased if the MIKLON hobbing machine is reinforced and its vibration is decreased. By this way the small precision gear of HB=400 can now be efficiently produced.

    The investigation of cutting temperature and tool wear characteristics of the rotary cutting tool is important to perform its machinerbility analysis. In this paper, cutting temperature is measured by a new temperature measuring equipment. A garter spring devise is used pik up the output signals from thermocouple wires. The tool wear characteristics is also examined. The following conclusions are obtained :
    1) The cycle of hearting and cooling in cutting temperature due to tip rotation is considerably large. The maximum temperature of the rotating tip is extreamly lower than that of the fixed tip. The differences in cutting temperature are mainly arisen by the increase in cooling effect due to tip rotation and the difference in cutting mechanics.
    2) The wear of the rotary cutting tool initiate at the corner of the cutting edge and the cutting edge is rounded off as the wear increases. The wear rate of the rotary cutting tool is very small and the tool life increases considerably even in cutting of the Titanium alloy, which is one of refractory materials.

    Precision measuring instruments for leadscrews are generally difficult to handle and require long measuring time. In this report, two methods of measuring pitch errors in leadscrews are presented, using the measuring instrument of easy handling designed and manufactured by the authors. These methods are developed to get a higher accuracy based on the statistical theory, and they are as follows; (i) The simple pitch errors of a leadscrew are obtained from comparison between the pitch of the measured screw and a master screw, and the accumulated pitch errors are calculated; (ii) The measured screw is aligned with the master screw. The accumulated pitch errors are measured by using the master screw and the comparator as the standard scale and the position detector respectively. The following results are obtained. (1) In case of the method (i), it improves the measuring accuracy to devide the whole length of the measured screw into several groups and to measure the pitch errors beteween the end points of each group firstly. The optimum number of groups to minimize the measuring error is derived from the statistical analysis and it is found to agree with the experiment. (2) The measuring accuracy in the method (ii), which is 2.5μm over the length of 800mm, is higher than that in the method (i).
